Chapter Fourteen
Crossing PathsHe learned bad things could happen quickly.
Sunggyu used the subway a lot considering the fact that he didn’t own a car and he had to get from job to job quickly. After a couple of trips on the subway, Sunggyu became accustomed to seeing the same people and the same stations that the train went through. After a couple more trips, Sunggyu noticed that there was this one man who always looked upset.
The first time Sunggyu noticed the man, the man was wearing a suit. He carried a briefcase in one hand and his cellphone was in another hand that was pressed against his ear. He yelled profoundly at the person he was speaking too, causing everybody in the subway station to stare at him. He raked his hand through his hair millions of times and in the end, he hung up the phone and walked off the station.
He didn’t come to the subway station for a couple of days but returned the following week. This time, though, he was texting on his phone. Every once in a while he would scoff or roll his eyes. Sunggyu would only be left to wonder who the man was talking to. And that was what happened every day.
That day, though, the man wasn’t yelling, nor was he talking on the phone, nor was he texting anybody. Instead, the man sat on one of the benches with a distressed look on his face. He had a newspaper next to him with the stocks and finances section open. The man didn’t notice when his phone fell out of his hand nor did he notice when someone took a seat next to him. He was simply aloof.
The sound of the rumbling train could be heard from a distance. Wind began to blow everybody’s hair back as the small amount of people stood up to board the train. Sunggyu noticed that the man stood up as well. But what he did next scarred Sunggyu for life.
Right before the train came, the man walked past Sunggyu and jumped into the rail track. A woman screamed when she saw what happened while another called the police right away. Sunggyu stood frozen and wide eyed. He could have sworn his heart stopped beating and everything went quiet for a second.
“Move aside!” Firefighters yelled as they entered the train station.
Sunggyu limply moved back to leave room for the officials. Someone beside him put his hand on Sunggyu’s shoulder and squeezed it. Sunggyu didn’t know who the man was but appreciated the kind act anyway.
“Everybody please follow that man over there,” One police officer pointed to another. “He’ll take you out of here.”
Sunggyu took one last glance at the scene of the suicide before following the crowd. Sunggyu noted that there were a couple of children here and there who were scared. They were held tightly by their mothers but that only did little to settle their trembling hearts. Sunggyu ached for those children who had to see such a life-changing event at such a young age.
“We would like all of you to provide a recount of what happened,” The police officer said. “Then you will be free to go.”
After Sunggyu was done telling the police officers what happened, he was let go. He took out his phone and called Myungsoo, asking him to come pick him up although they didn’t own a car. Sunggyu just refused to go home alone.
“Hyung, what are you doing here?” Myungsoo asked when he found Sunggyu standing outside the police station.
“I’ll tell you on the way home. Let’s take the bus not the subway, though,” Sunggyu said, eyes down on the floor.
Myungsoo looked back at everybody who looked shaken just like his brother. He raised his eyebrows at the scene before jo
