Can't Step BackIt was a warm, sunny day, so Himchan had decided to kick out the newest member of their gang and his roommate.
"Go out and get some sun." he had said, then locked the door.
So Youngjae and Daehyun had wandered out aimlessly into the nearest park. They were glad that it was a weekday, since it meant nobody else there to share with them. After a few minute of walking around and chatting, the two sat down on a bench underneath a tree. For a few moments, neither of them said anything as they enjoyed the quietness and peace. It had been almost strangely quiet for the past few days, but they were glad.
"Hey, Dae..." Youngjae said.
"Yeah?"
"Can you tell me more about B.A.P.?" he asked.
The older boy tilted his head slightly. "About what though?"
"In general. Anything important? Now that I'm part of the gang, I want to help you guess lessen the burden."
"Well..."
Youngjae's ears perked up. It was his chance. He had been afraid to ask earlier because he thought they would be suspicious if it was too soon. Now that's he had been with them for over two months, he thought that it was probably a good time to ask. He had gotten much closer with all of the members, and most of them thought of him as a family member by then. Youngjae would finish his mission. He would finally get enough money for his brother. If only he could ignore the guilt that was eating away at him.
They're doing these bad things for the same reason as me... Youngjae though. For someone else...
"Youngjae?"
The undercover agent was snapped out of his thoughts when Daehyun lowered his head to be on the same level as his. "Yeah?"
"Did you hear my answer?" Daehyun asked.
"Sorry... I was blanking out. Can you please repeat that?"
The older one chuckled. "You've been doing that a lot lately. Is there something on your mind?"
"Not really. It's just a bad habit." Youngjae shrugged.
"Well, I said that there's nothing more. You already know everything about us. B.A.P. isn't all that great or secretive. The only reason we're mysterious is... Because we're not hiding anything. I don't even know where the other gangs get those rumours from." Daehyun told him.
"So you guys are doing this to get back the man who took you in?"
"Yeah."
"I... This really doesn't feel like a gang." Youngjae said with a sad smile. "You guys are good people."
Daehyun laughed bitterly at his choice of words. Although Youngjae was part of their gang, he had never gone out on a job with them. "Are we? After we've injured innocent people and stolen money?"
"You had no choice."
"Of course we had a choice. We... Just chose the bad one."
"It's unlike you to be so depressed, Dae." Youngjae said. "Maybe I'll ask Himchan to make you some cheesecake later."
Daehyun instantly brightened up. "Thanks."
"Jae? Are you okay?"
Daehyun's concerned face appeared in Youngjae's view and the younger felt tears pooling in his eyes. What happened to his training? What happened to hiding his emotions? He had no answer.
"Jae?" Daehyun's voice softened even more as he put his hand over the other boy's. "You know you can talk with me."
"I--I just remembered something from before." Youngjae lied.
"What happened?"
"I did something horrible." Youngjae said. He tried to make up a story in his mind without revealing anything. "My best friend... I took everything away from him."
"What do you mean?"
"H-He was an orphan, and he went to s-several different homes. When he finally settled in... I set his house on fire and his family didn't make it out. Now he's stru-ugling to live by himself." Youngjae didn't notice when his tears spilled out or when he began hiccuping for breath. He didn't even understand why he was crying. He shouldn't be feeling sympathy for gangsters. They were criminals. But maybe he was just confused and frustrated. He wanted to end the mission quickly and get the money to help his brother, but he also wanted to prolong it to stay with the gang. His job made his life so much harder.
"It was by accident. You couldn't help it." Daehyun said.
I didn't say it was by accident. Youngjae thought. Do you think so highly of me? That you immediately assumed that it was by accident?
"I'm sure he'll forgive you. You didn't mean it." Daehyun continued. "If I were him, I know I would."
Youngjae looked up and saw sincerity in Daehyun's eyes. He was saying the truth, but all it did was make Youngjae's insides twist even harder. It was so bad that he wanted to throw up. He must have went a few shades paler because Daehyun's eyes became even more worried.
"Do you want to lie down?" he asked, patting his legs.
"Y-Yeah."
The two of them just stayed there for a while, Youngjae's head on Daehyun's lap, and the older one staring off into space. He seemed lost in his own world as he softly hummed to himself as he gaze was fixed onto the sky. Youngjae found himself unable to look away from him.
"You know, you don't seem like a gangster." Youngjae said.
"Hmm?" Daehyun hummed. "I don't?"
"Not at all."
"Well, I guess that's good since I can live a more normal life."
"Do you want to?"
"Of course I do." Daehyun said. "But with the rest of the members, of course."
"Do you think you can ever live one?"
Daehyun shrugged. "Who knows."
"I hope you can." Youngjae said quietly.
"Why are you talking like that?" Daehyun chuckled. "Are you regretting joining us now?"
"No." Youngjae said. "It's just... I want you guys to be happy."
Daehyun chuckled at that. "You sound so cheesy."
