In the Meantime
Only One for MeA/N: Inspired by this video.
“Hello?”
“Hi, I’m looking for Jessica.”
“You—?” She can hear Tiffany’s confusion, and then, barely missing a beat, “You’ve reached her. How can I help you?”
Tiffany is obviously trying to do an imitation of Jessica’s voice when she sounds bored, but she’s failing quite terribly. Jessica has to bite back her laughter.
“Well, my name is Tiffany and I’m looking into getting some hearing aids because everyone says I talk really loudly but I sound perfectly fine to my own ears so I think there’s something wrong with my hearing.”
“Okay, shut up.” Jessica can hear Tiffany’s glower too, if it’s possible to hear an expression. Tiffany has the power to convey that through her voice.
“See? You just proved my point.”
“Jessi,” Tiffany whines.
“I thought that was you.”
“Is this the part where I say something cheesy like we are one so you are me and I am you?”
“We are always one?” Jessica says, and there’s just the slightest bit of bitterness in her voice that dissolves when Tiffany says, “We are,” soft but unyielding.
“Okay,” Jessica says quietly.
“Okay?”
“Yeah. You really are cheesy.”
Tiffany laughs. “I never denied it.”
“Yeah, you don’t deny that but you deny your volume, which I feel like is much more undeniable.”
“Je-ssi.” Tiffany also has the power to drag that out into about five syllables, which Jessica really has to commend her for.
“You know saying my name in a whining tone isn’t a valid argument, right?” she says, amused.
“It works half the time.”
“That’s just because I get too tired to argue with you. You’re like an unstoppable force that can move even an immovable object.”
She can hear Tiffany perk up, practically preening. “You think that highly of me? Thanks, Jessi! Also, does that make you the immovable object?”
“Well, I don’t like moving so sure. I could be a rock or something.”
“A rock,” Tiffany repeats slowly.
“Yeah, don’t I rock?”
“…are you sure I’m the cheesy one?”
Jessica shrugs, even though she knows Tiffany can’t see it. Maybe she can hear it. “I never said you were alone.”
Tiffany makes an acquiescent sound. “Yeah, I’m not alone, right?” She hums the two words in the tune from their song.
“You’re definitely the leader in cheese level though.”
“I’m fine with that,” Tiffany says brightly. “If I’m the leader, does that mean you’d follow me?”
“I’d follow you anywhere,” Jessica says, “as long as I don’t have to run.”
Tiffany’s laughter is more than something she can hear; it’s something she feels, something that warms her from inside out, something she can’t wait to hear in person, accompanied by that radiant smile, but in the meantime she’ll make do with soaking it in over the phone.
In the meantime.
A/N: As we all know, the leader in cheese level is actually me. Yep I totally referenced Divine and Not Alone. Brownie points if you can catch the two other references in here.
