Kind But Selfish

An Angel's Promise To The Sky

AFTER AN hour of airflight, Leeteuk and Sora had landed to Kennedy International Airport in New York City from Los Angeles. Sora smiled when she heard the busy sounds of buzzing horns of cabs lined on the street, and saw the people walking together, rushing on their work and schedules.

“I’m really in New York, am I?” Sora uttered to herself,

“Yes, you are. We are in New York, yeobo and we’re going to see this city together.” Sora heard Leeteuk say next to her ear after pulling her close to him,

“I’m getting excited already, oppa. I saw how beautiful New York is at night in pictures and now I’m going to see it with my very own eyes.” Sora said, her smile never leaving her lips since she stepped out of the airport,

“Then we should get to our hotel to unload our things and hit the streets of New York.” Leeteuk said playfully and bent his arm for Sora to take.

They rode a cab going to the hotel room where Leeteuk reserved a room for them. The couple can’t take their eyes on the tall buildings they pass by and Sora took some pictures in every corner she sees,

“Excuse me, you guys are tourists right?” the taxi driver asked them and they both nodded, “Do you want to have a tour guide? I can help you out if you like.” He then offered,

“Oppa, I think it would be better if we just rent a car or something rather than taking the cab every single time.” Sora suggested,

“That would be nice, yeobo-ya but we don’t know the streets of New York that well. So we might get lost other than getting on our destination if you let me drive.” Leeteuk replied,

“Don’t you think it will be cheaper if we just rent a car here rather than getting a cab every time we want to go out?” he then asked the taxi driver to calm Sora up,

“That can be an option, Miss. But to be honest with you, renting cars here in NY are really expensive that’s why most of the people choose riding on cabs instead except if you really know your way to the city.” The kind driver told them,

“Alright. We understand.” Leeteuk said and turned to Sora, “See, yeobo. It’s not really practical to rent a car since it’s only the two of us unlike when we were in Paris.”

“Excuse me, again. Do you mind if I ask how long will you be staying here in New York? I suppose you’ll be staying long because of the baggage that you brought with you.” The driver asked again,

“We will be here for about a week.” Leeteuk replied,

“Ahm, if you like I can offer my cab to you to drive you around New York. I can be your service every time you need a ride. How’s that?” the driver offered them,

“I’ll have to think about that first.” Leeteuk then said,

“That’s fine. By the way, my name is Morgan Smith, I’m a taxi driver by profession and I got wife and kids. That’s why I’m offering you my services.” He answered,

“Nice to meet you, Mr. Smith. By the way, how much will it cost us if we avail your services?” Leeteuk asked seriously,

“That would be about 50$ a day. I’m planning to get passengers around the city while waiting for you, guys. So I think that would be a bit fair.” The driver said,

“Compared to the cost of renting a car, it would probably cost you couple more hundreds for a weeks’ worth of staying here. That would be 5 to 800$ tops. That’s a lot of savings if you ask me.” He said and Leeteuk felt the cab halt on a stop,

“We’re here.  Trump Hotel. This is the West side of Central Park. You can see the park on that side.” The taxi driver said and turned to his right, “This hotel is owned by Donald Trump, one of the richest men in America.”

“Oppa, can we go there later after we have dropped off our baggage?” Sora said excitedly while looking at the green scenery in front of her,

Ne, arasso. I think it would be better too if we just get this guy’s offer so that we won’t have a hard time going around. If we get lost then we can just call him to fetch us. What do you think, yeobo-ya?” Leeteuk asked,

“I think so too.” Sora said, agreeing to what Leeteuk told her,

“Morgan, we have already talked and we decided to accept your offer. “ Leeteuk said to the driver, “By the way, my name is Dennis Park and this is my wife, Sarah Kang.”

What Leeteuk said made Sora blush really red that she touched both of her cheeks with her knuckles and felt how hot her cheeks were,

“Nice to meet you both. Now I see that you’re newlyweds!” Morgan said excitedly, “We get that a lot here in New York. We have a lot of romantic places here too where you can see. Take that park, for instance, it’s really famous for lovers.”

“Thank you for your suggestion, Morgan. We’re planning to make this New York experience a blast.” Leeteuk said,

“Oh, really? Then I’m your guy for that. I’m going to take you to the good places around here in New York. I’m sure you’re going to enjoy it a lot!” the driver said and gave both of them a thumbs up.

After saying goodbye to their friendly taxi driver, they went inside the Trump International Hotel and Tower and entered the main lobby,

They were walking to a vast shiny granite floor, the first they laid their eyes on is the beautiful chandelier which was hung in the middle of the room separating a big brown couch on the left which looked realy comfy to sit on and the Reception area of the hotel,

Sora can't stop looking at the design the hotel has, never expecting that Leeteuk booked them on this luxurious hotel in the City of Lights.

"Oppa, is this real? We're really going to stay here?" Sora asked her boyfriend,

"Ne. Honestly Siwon suggested this place to me and he told me the accomodations here are the best." Leeteuk answered, "Do you like it, yeobo?"

"Yes, I do." Sora replied, "But I'm sure that staying here is really expensive." she said and looked around the beautiful hotel,

"Yeobo, don't mind those kind of things. What is important is we get to enjoy the things we're going to find here and that we're going to explore this beautiful place with each other, right?" Leeteuk replied,

"The Central Park is just a few meters away from here, we can also visit some of the Art galleries they have too." Leeteuk said, "We also have to visit Times Square, that's the place where we performed our SM Town and I'm sure you're going to like it there."

"Arasso. Oppa, I want to thank you for bringing me here. I never thought that I'll be in America, to think that we just came from Paris." Sora said and giggled,

"I will take you anywhere you want, yeobo. I'll give you the best things that life has to offer." Leeteuk said and kissed Sora's forehead,

"But oppa, I don't have anything in return to give you. I... " Sora said, figeting on her words,

"Am I asking for like this, too? Being right here beside me is enough." Leeteuk said and hold Sora close to embrace her, "Being in my arms to hold you tightly like this is enough for me."

"I love you, Jungsoo oppa..." Sora said and reciprocated the hug,

"... And your love for me is all I'm asking for Sora, that's all I want..."

The Fading of Bright Stars

In the years we shared work spaces, seldom did our hours crossed. She worked night shifts, while I move around across different time zones to meet the demands of my profession. She was a luminary; a survivor of countless excisions when the demands of work is lesser than what is required of human resources. And if not for the months-long infirmity last year, she would have endured the most recent culling. She became part of the statistics, only to return when a colleague flew abroad to get married and live with her fiancé.

A fine lady in her early 30's, one would easily mistake her for an East Asian. Her eyes disappear when she smiles, and her porcelain skin is the envy of many. Her gauntly frame, albeit a cause of concern, hardly bothers any. Colleagues would tell she eats nothing but Chippy and Coke. But who are we to forbid her of such pleasures? She delivers, and for all we care, satisfied are we of her job performance.

Talk is an avocation the two of us hardly engage. Reason lies in office hierarchy, but more so, because we respect each other's solitary leanings. But this doesn't mean ambivalence, or hidden disdain. Words may have never articulated what my thoughts were, but I've always regarded her in high esteem.
