Sleepover Night

An Angel's Promise To The Sky

AFTER the family dinner, the Park family all stayed at the living room listening to some soft music and enjoying a cup of tea together. Sora sat in between Jiyeon and Leeteuk while Taeyeon is sitting beside their older sister Inyoung.

"Jungsoo, is it too much to ask from you if I tell you to sleep here tonight? I really miss you, son and I want to spend more time with you." Mrs. Park asked Jungsoo and sighed,

"Ah, omma, appa, I invited Taeyeon to sleep over tonight. I think it would be nice to spend our time together since I haven't seen her for a while now." Inyoung informed the family,

"Yeah, right! You just invited Taeyeon eonnie to sleep here tonight when omma told us that Jungsoo oppa will be staying here." Jiyeon said and smirked at her sister, "Isn't that right, eonnie?"

Inyoung blushed and pursed her lips, "Well, is there something bad about that? I want them to be close again. I thnk Jungsoo-ya just need a push from others to encourage him."

"Honestly eonnie, there is. Oppa doesn't want to spend the night here 'coz Taeyeon eonnie is here and as you can see, Jungsoo oppa seems to be allergic with her now." Jiyeon answered back and snorted, "How can she be so insensitive?" she mumbled afterwards,

"I'm sure that the two of them will get along really well again if they spend more time with each other." Inyoung answered back, "And I think Jungsoo deserve Taeyeon more than this Sora he brought with him."

"Yah! You're my sister alright but please spare my friend with your words, eonnie. Sora eonnie did nothing wrong to you and --" Jiyeon was about to continue when their father stopped both of them,

"Would you two stop fighting with each other." Mr. Park said, "Both of you embraced tightly earlier when we were at the airport but now you are arguing about something trivial, and in front of us too?" their father said,

"Inyoung eonnie, Jiyeon-ah, you don't have to fight. I can just go back to the hotel where I'm staying." Taeyeon said and took a bow to say goodbye to the Park family, "Leeteuk oppa, I'm going now." she said and Leeteuk just nod to her and glancing while she's walking to the door,

"Park Jungsoo! Won't you take Taeyeon to her hotel?! Are you a gentleman or not?" Inyoung asked and eyed Leeteuk furiously. Taeyeon on the other hand, stood there, waiting for Leeteuk to move from his seat.

"Aniyo. I'm not going anywhere. I'm still not finished with my tea either." Leeteuk just said and continued sipping his cup of tea,

"Oppa..." Sora uttered and let her eyes meet Leeteuk's,

"Mweo, yeobo-ya? I'm too tired to do anything though. I don't want to go anywhere." Leeteuk answered and turned to his older sister, "You don't want that woman to leave this house alone don't you, noona?"

"Yes, that's why I want you to take her back to her hotel because I don't want her to be alone and it's too late for her to take the cab too." Inyoung answered,

"Then let her stay tonight then just like you planned." Leeteuk replied while looking at his tea,

"Oppa! But if she stays with us tonight then you will go back to the dorm, right?" Jiyeon said then turned to look at their omma's saddened expression,

"Hmm... I want to stay and grant omma's wish since it's really been a long time I last went home and honestly I want to have a chat with Inyoung noona too even just for tonight." Jungsoo answered, not taking his eyes away from the tea,

"Assa! Does that mean you're going to stay for tonight eventhough Taeyeon eonnie is here?" Jiyeon asked excitedly that she didn't notice the sadness in Sora's expression,

"Taeyeon eonnie, don't you come inside Jungsoo oppa's room. Just be thankful that you will be able to sleep under one roof tonight!" Jiyeon said, that made their mother smile and relax,

Inyoung and Taeyeon smiled at each other before Inyoung turned to her brother, "Thank you, Jungsoo-ya. You're the best brother." Inyoung said and hugged Leeteuk tightly, "I missed you a lot."

Sora didn't know what to do in the situation, she just looked at Leeteuk who was blowing the hot tea, "Then I have to take my leave now, oppa. It's getting really late." Sora said and stood up from the couch she was sitting on but Leeteuk is not letting go of her hand,

"Where do you think you're going, Kang Sora-ya?" Leeteuk asked without looking at her, all the people in the room got Leeteuk's attention,

"Oppa, I'm going home. It's really late and I know that appa and omma are worried already." Sora replied, trying to hide the sadness on her tone, "I asked you to come home with me so that you can spend your time with your family."

"Yeah, Jungsoo. She's right. You have to let her go home already. I'm sure that her parents will be worried about her." Inyoung encouraged when she saw that Leeteuk isn't letting go of Sora's hand, "Come, Sora-ssi. I'm going to show you the door."

Sora was about to follow Inyoung to the door but she felt her hand being held tighter by Leeteuk that she can't move from where she stood, "You're not going anywhere." they heard Leeteuk say,

Sora just stared at Leeteuk strangely as if he had spoken to another language, "What did you say, oppa?"

Leeteuk finally met Sora's eyes and looked at her intently, "I said you're not going anywhere." he said firmly, that made Jiyeon clap her hands,

"What's this?! What do you mean she's not going anywhere?" Inyoung asked frantically, "What if her parents worry about her? We don't want someone banging our door in the middle of the night, won't we?" Inyoung complained,

"Oh, didn't I tell you, noona? Since you're going to let your friend sleep here tonight, shouldn't we let Sora-ya sleep here too? Since she's Jiyeon's friend after all." Leeteuk said and shrugged his shoulders then winked at Jiyeon, "Would that be alright, omma?" he then asked their mom,

"I don't mind that, Jungsoo. As long as your father and I get to spend time with you." their mother smiled, "Then I should prepare your bed tonight." she said and she got up from the couch followed by her husband,

"Omma, can you lend me one more pillow in my room and a new toothbrush for Sora too? Just put it beside mine. Thanks, omma!" Leeteuk asked their mom that made the four girls around him dumbfounded,

"What makes you so sure that I will stay here for the night, Park Jungsoo?" Sora said while raising an eyebrow on him,

"It's too late for you to go back there now, yeobo-ya and besides, I'm sure your parents already locked your gates close since I already asked their permission telling them you're going to spend the night with us." Leeteuk replied casually,

"But, oppa..." Jiyeon whined, "I want to spend my time with Sora eonnie too. Can she sleep in my room tonight?" she asked and did an aegyo to her brother that made him smile,

Leeteuk then stood up from the couch and carried the surprised Sora like a newlywed couple, "Aniyo, she's going to sleep in my room tonight, period." he said and walked towards his room.

The Fading of Bright Stars

In the years we shared work spaces, seldom did our hours crossed. She worked night shifts, while I move around across different time zones to meet the demands of my profession. She was a luminary; a survivor of countless excisions when the demands of work is lesser than what is required of human resources. And if not for the months-long infirmity last year, she would have endured the most recent culling. She became part of the statistics, only to return when a colleague flew abroad to get married and live with her fiancé.

A fine lady in her early 30's, one would easily mistake her for an East Asian. Her eyes disappear when she smiles, and her porcelain skin is the envy of many. Her gauntly frame, albeit a cause of concern, hardly bothers any. Colleagues would tell she eats nothing but Chippy and Coke. But who are we to forbid her of such pleasures? She delivers, and for all we care, satisfied are we of her job performance.

Talk is an avocation the two of us hardly engage. Reason lies in office hierarchy, but more so, because we respect each other's solitary leanings. But this doesn't mean ambivalence, or hidden disdain. Words may have never articulated what my thoughts were, but I've always regarded her in high esteem.
