QUIT // ChunJoe.
Cotton Socks
"I quit." Chanhee had been so content under the summer sun, he had almost missed what his best friend said. They were sprawled out on the grass in a spot where they city became the country, just enjoying eachother's company. They always did this when summer came around. Just spend the day up on the hill, listening to the bird song and the breeze brush by. Chanhee turned his head to look at his friend.
"What?" He could see Byunghun smile, warm and soft.
"I quit."
"Quit what?"
"Being a human. I'm going to be a bird instead." Chanhee examined his friend to his left. Byunghun's dark hair was a few shades lighter in the glittering sun. The sun looked best on him. But he didn't look crazy. It wasn't unlike Byunghun to say unsual things but, it was the first time the other boy had said something like this, whatever it meant.
He watched the gentle breeze slightly sway Byunghun's chocolate hair. He watched his eyelashes fan out across his cheek when the sun got too bright. He glanced down at his friend's relaxed hand at his side. For some reason, he had the urge to hold it. But he didn't. They're not children anymore. Hand holding had a different meaning now. It was then that Chanhee realsied the meaning behind Byunghun's words.
It's hard being human.
"Being a bird sounds nice." He agrees, turning his attention to the azure expanse above him. He watches various birds soar overhead. All they worry about is food and teratory. He could cope with that if he was a bird. That sounded much easier than life and being human.
"Let's fly away together. Let's quit." Chanhee doesn't notice the level of seriousness until he turns to look at Byunghun again. The other boy had rolled onto his side, giving Chanhee his undivided attention, hazel eyes sparkling. He could feel himself falling - and not for the first time. Byunghun always had that effect on him. But it was one thing to talk. Chanhee smiles though because he couldn't stop thinking about how amazing that sounded. It's nice to pretend.
"Let's promise that after all... this we quit and fly away." Chanhee's smile grows wistfull and genuine, matching Byunghun's, becuase he understands.
"OK. Promise." Byunghun grins brighter than the sun above them and looks out towards the horizion. He takes Chanhee's hand and interlaces their fingers together. Chanhee is shocked but he he looks over at Byunghun, a bittersweet smile on his features. And if he's not mistaken, a ghost of a tear in the corner in his friend's eye.
Chanhee squeezes Byunghun hands tightly and the tears fall.
'I quit.'
