The Prophet Confides

Early in the afternoon, you were heading to Prophet Yesung’s private office. Prophet Yesung was the SHINee royals’ mentor, teacher, and close family friend. If he summoned your presence, you didn’t hesitate to oblige.

Upon knocking on the prophet’s office doors only once, he answered right away. He swept open the door and ushered you in hospitably.

“Hello, Princess,” he greeted you hastily. “Come in, come in.”

Entering the room promptly, you stood aware of your surroundings. The drapes of the far back windows were drawn in to block out the sun. The lamp light was dim and oddly mellow. The atmosphere tasted sober and thick, full of tension.

There was no one else present but you and Yesung—so this was a private meeting. The prophet’s dark mahogany hair was untidy as if he kept clutching at it in frustration. His skin was unnaturally pale under his light tan.

You had no time to inquire of his health when he gestured with a hand and said, “Please, take a seat, Princess. This might take a while.”

You nodded silently and took comfort in an empty armchair, the prophet sitting adjacent from you, posture reclined dispiritedly.

“So, what is it that you wish to discuss?” you asked straightforwardly, down to business. Certainly Yesung didn’t summon you to simply chit-chat about your sorcery training.

Yesung sighed at how you easily perceived him. “Has your father told you anything, yet?”

A slight frown tipped your lips. “Father?” you repeated quizzically. “No, nothing much from him.”

Yesung’s hands trembled when he clasped them together. You stared at him, wondering if he was in pain. Something nagged at you, telling you whatever burdened the prophet would affect you tenfold.

“Princess,” he whispered, low and cautious, “about a week ago, I had a vision.”

You were instantly struck with concern, attention undivided. Yesung’s visions were nothing to play around with. They were the real deal. Something worth looking into. Sometimes his visions foretold of good news and prosperity, but the other times, unfortunately, were filled with dread and destruction. “What did you see?” you asked in a small voice. The prophet’s expression made you scared to ask, but you had to.

Yesung buried his woeful face in his hands, his tone regretful as if he was sorry to be a seer. “I saw...EXO being invaded by the Techas.”

Goosebumps bristled down your arms as if the room dropped in temperature. You nearly shot out of your seat, eyes widening in absurdity. “The Techas? But we haven’t had a problem with them since before I was born!”

“But you and I both know my vision with come true,” Yesung said flatly, growing agitated with each word. “I saw the Techas strewn across EXO’s land. People running and screaming. Soldiers risking their lives to fight back. Cities on fire!” He rubbed at his tired almond eyes. His voice dropped desolately. “Raids. Battles. Chaos.”

Stop it! you wanted to cry at him, but didn’t have to when the prophet fell quiet. His head was ducked in despair, while you tried to get ahold of your bearings. Your small hands were clenched in an overdose of shock.

“My father,” you demanded almost breathlessly. “How come my father and King Heechul have not taken precaution to space perimeters and safety protocols?”

Yesung raised his drooped head. He looked troubled. “They believe with their combined forces the Techas don’t stand a chance against them. Aside from that, your father also informed me that none of the space sectors have picked up any signs of a breach.”

“Do you honestly think the Techas will invade soon or even at all?” you criticized, unfavorable towards the verdict. “Can you pinpoint a time frame? Is your vision really true?”

“That’s what bothers me, Princess,” he admitted. “Everything about the vision bothers me. I was hoping to discuss with you about its...finer points.” His bloodshot eyes sought yours. “You see, I think you play a major role in it. With your intelligence, I hope to understand it more.”

Weaving your fingers together, you braced yourself and nodded, ready to listen. “Alright, tell me. Why am I so important?” Your tone turned crisp. “Aside from the fact that those bloodthirsty machines dare to invade my fiancés homeland.”

Taking a minute to regard you, Yesung took a deep breath to prepare for a long, arduous explanation. In precise, descriptive details, he explained what he foresaw as carefully as he could. His voice was composed and detached to avoid emotional conflict, but it didn’t matter as your insides churned in dread and your blood run cold. A lengthy amount of time passed and the prophet finally finished his explanation and anxiously waited for your response. He observed you. Your hands were wrung, knuckles white, your gaze glued to the floor in astonishment, your beautiful eyes filled with disbelief.

Finally you responded in a shaky exhale, “I don’t...I can’t...how is that possible?”

“If I knew, I wouldn’t be talking to you,” Yesung said quietly.

You bit your bottom lip burdensomely. “For once, I wish you weren’t a remarkable prophet.” Hardening your countenance, your tone became mature and analytical. “I have a few guesses, but I need more research to confirm such wayward hypothesis. The resources I have now are useless...”

“What do you propose, Princess?” he asked, watching your expressions, but your expressions were locked within your eyes. So many emotions flickered by. Worry, distress, determination, and a flare of protectiveness. You didn’t want anyone to get hurt.

Especially your fiancés.

“I need my grandmother’s spellbook,” you decided.

Yesung choked on air, affronted. “Your grandmother’s sacred spellbook?” he repeated sharply. “But that’s a family heirloom! A priceless treasure! When you’re of age, it will be handed down to you, but such—”

“It’s the only resource that will help me,” you insisted. “That, or I won’t find a suitable solution to prevent this disaster.”

Yesung judged you—the set of your mouth, the liveliness of your gentle face, the rigid muscles in your small body—your entire being. Most people would mistake you as a picky, overthinking, smart-mouth brat, but no, you weren’t. Those misunderstood factors about you detracted the fact you held much more wisdom and intelligence than him or anyone else. There was a huge between you and him. It was hard to believe you were the powerful and wiser one. Dwelling deep inside you was untapped power and solid integrity sleeping within your pure, bright soul. When released, it was amazing and unstoppable.

Releasing a loud sigh, the prophet relented, leaning back into his seat. “Yes. I will secretly take the spellbook from its case and discreetly deliver it to you during the evening.”

You smiled a very small, grateful smile. “Thank you, teacher. I only want to prevent a tragedy from unfolding.”

“Bless this world,” he said softly. “It is lucky to have you as their princess. I can finally see why you were born with such unworldly perception.”

You stood up regally and so did Yesung, his taller frame towering over you. “I will head to my training session now,” you told him. “But don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone what transpired between us. It will be kept under wraps.”

Yesung nodded in worn agreement. “Of course. While you research, I’ll try to convince your father to be more wary of space breaches.”

“Please, do,” you urged.

Yesung led you out of his office, bowed, and bid farewell. You lonesomely glided down the massive hallway. Your shadow loomed larger than your own figure, casted upon the waxed tiles of the floor. You walked on, a heavy burden laid upon your slim shoulders, but you didn’t crumbled under the weight. Determination as hard as steel, you braved on.

With this intelligence of mine, I will protect the people I love.
