Sharing Sunsets And Promising Sunrises

“Hmm... It’s getting late,” Luhan mused, staring out the window of the train speculatively, watching the scenery speed by. Over by the mountains in the distance, the sun was dipping slowly and sluggishly below the planes, in no hurry to retire. Clashing colors painted the azure sky with visible streaks of pink and orange. Two large moon dominated the sky.

“This will be the last stop for today,” Yifan told him. “We’re spending the night at Baekhyun’s.”

Luhan pouted. “Still two more days until Aris is with me...”

Yifan sighed grouchily. “Don’t remind me. I’m last.”

For a change, Baekhyun wasn’t chatting up a storm with Chanyeol. Instead, he shot secret, longing glances at you, two seats over, where you were calmly conversing with Xiumin and Yixing. The light prince fiddled with his thin, delicate fingers nervously. He couldn’t believe it was his turn next. From what he hypothesized, Suho, Kyungsoo, and Tao did a good job entertaining you—most likely by flaunting the mightiness of their powers. In response, he would also demonstrate his power. Luckily for him, the time of day was perfect for his needs. Truth is, Baekhyun was one of the few princes who barely clung to you or approached you the most. The same applied to Kyungsoo and Chen, but oddly enough, shy Yixing had the courage to seek your attention.

Like the previous examples, Baekhyun’s residence was located in a private, closed-off area, gifted with the most beautiful view, plus geographic advantages.

“What’s dat?” Kai wondered, hopping up on a stool by the counter, having caught Baekhyun evaluating the contents of a basket. Servants had spent their time and effort to cook some food for him...and someone else.

“Dinner,” replied Baekhyun, putting in a handful of napkins. “I’m going on a picnic with Princess Aris.”

From where he was indiscreetly stealing food off the dinner table, Xiumin gasped loudly. “WHAT?”

“She’s not eating here with all of us?” Suho inquired. He stopped rearranging the cutlery to raise a brow.

“But—” Sehun began to protest until Yifan raised a warning hand.

“Let them be,” the crowned prince said firmly. “It’s his time to bond with her. She needs to eat soon, but knowing her, she wants to spend time with Baekhyun.”

The light prince felt his heart warm up at the supportive words. “Thank you, brother.”

Yifan simply nodded and helped Suho rally their brothers for dinner. Meanwhile, Baekhyun hauled up his basket and pack and entered the sunroom where you were patiently waiting for him.

You immediately stood up when he appeared, then your gaze landed on the woven basket. You blinked. “A picnic?” you questioned.

Baekhyun blushed lightly. “I hope you don’t mind just eatin’ with me.”

You were quick to smile reassuringly, noting how skittish he was. “Of course not! I’d love to eat with you! Like a real outing, right?”

Comprehension struck Baekhyun like a blow to the chest. He realized it really was an outing—not a playdate. Between two people. You and him. His cheeks darkened into a rosy color. “Y-yes. So, let’s go!”

You hooked your arm through the offered loop of his free one, and he ushered you out of his house like a cordial gentleman.

“Bye, Baekhyunnie! Bye, Aris!” Chanyeol sniffled mournfully like an abandoned child, waving a limp hand goodbye as he watched his closest brother and the love of his life walk out the door, shadowed by two huge guards.

Luhan rolled his eyes. “Oh, here, you crybaby.” Using telekinesis, a much needed tissue flew to the fire prince’s face who blew his nose loudly.

...

“The hills here are like from a painting,” you admired, feeling transported into an artwork. “It looks dazzling when the sun hits it.” With educated eyes, you scrutinized the sight of blending shadows and rays of golden sunlight settling upon the hill slopes.

Baekhyun’s puppy eyes widened in revelation. “You notice it, too?”

You nodded earnestly. “Of course! Father told me to appreciate art! Nature is art!”

You’re amazing, your fiancé thought dreamily. You embrace nature and what it gives. It’s impossible not to fall in love with an insightful girl like you.

You peered at him, which made him think he was staring at you for too long, so he ducked his head the other way, but that wasn’t it.

“Do you need help carrying the basket?” you asked him in polite concern.

Baekhyun violently shook his head, pink-cheeked. “I-I can carry it. I may look skinny, but I’m strong!” He made a big show of puffing out his chest.

“I believe you,” you laughed sweetly. At the beautiful sound, the light prince wanted to melt into a puddle of goo. You literally lit up his life. And him? He was gladly wrapped around your dainty little finger.

Baekhyun expertly weaved through the hills, faithfully leading you along, the two of you (and your guards) elevating to higher ground. The hills were carpeted with a soft, downy layer of grass, dotted with tiny, colorful wildflowers and weeds.

Your fiancé inclined his head at a certain hill, one that was flat-topped than the others around it. You saw a beacon of sunlight at the very top. “We’re havin’ the picnic up there.”

“Oh, my,” you automatically gasped when your eyes feasted on the breathtaking view stretched out before you. Everything was inviting and clear at this height. A gentle breeze blew by, blowing at your hair. The evening sunlight made you glow with a warm, ethereal aura as if you were a nature spirit. Setting down the basket and his pack, Baekhyun smiled at your astounded expression. He mindlessly reached out to tuck a stray lock of your hair behind your ear. The two of you widened your eyes at the tender action.

“I’m sorry, Princess!” he blurted out, instantly retracting his hand. “I didn’t mean to—”

“It’s fine,” you quickly assured him. “I don’t mind, and thank you.”

Baekhyun looked down sheepishly. He cleared his raw throat. “So, uh, I’ll spread the blanket out so we can eat.” He scrambled to do so.

Having already eaten something, the guards were stationed elsewhere, but kept you two in their sights. You and Baekhyun were sitting on the laid out blanket, enjoying your own special dinner. When he didn’t seem to notice, you observed the light prince. The way the light itself embraced him like a hug enthralled you—he literally shined. His hair was a golden-amber brown, like he was wearing a crown of sunlight. His healthy peach skin clung with light, gentle glow. As corny as it sounded, his smile was sunnier the sun and full of vitality.

Only, Baekhyun did notice you staring (ogling) at him intently (shamelessly). He blinked cluelessly. “Do I have somethin’ on my face?” he asked, setting his flask down.

Caught, you blushed reflexively. “Huh? What? Oh, sorry! No, you don’t! I mean—I was—”

“Looking at me?” he finished knowingly, smiling to show that he wasn’t bothered.

You calmed down. “Yes, that.” You popped a grape in your mouth to avoid spilling out anymore nonsense.

Baekhyun sought for your attention. “Princess, watch this.” He tossed a grape high above his head and it sailed into his opened mouth. He swallowed, grinning.

Amused, you clapped. “Bravo!”

You and your fiancé spent five minutes entertaining yourselves by catching pieces of fruit in your mouths—colorful fruit even bouncing off your heads! Stomachs full, the two of you tidied up your mess, and Baekhyun determined it was the prime opportunity to demonstrate his power.

“Princess, just sit back and watch, alright?” he kindly requested, and you obliged, sitting cross-legged on the blanket diligently. Baekhyun stood several meters away from you, near the edge of the hill, his back to you. Only a small wedge of the sun remained in the horizon, the last of its rays streaking the sky. The sky was a canvass of bold colors—salmon pink, vibrant orange, crimson red, and midnight blue. The light prince closed his eyes and held out his arms.

You released the slightest of gasps as the remaining rays of sunlight enveloped Baekhyun’s slight physique from head to toe. He was his own light source—a bright beacon—and you felt blinded. He exhaled once, and then all the sunlight from the horizon and back gathered towards him like how Suho influenced water. Now the scenery was fully nighttime. Baekhyun had captured the rays of light and began accumulating it into a compressed ball cupped in his skinny, beautiful fingers. Pure solar energy.

“Amazing,” you gaped. Baekhyun had just made evening into night. What he had contained in his hands was basically the sunset.

That wasn’t the end of the performance. There was still the grand finale. Baekhyun opened his eyes to glimpse down at the ball of energy cupped in his hands. With a small smile, he lifted up his arms—and exhaling—tossed the ball of light up. It was propelled half a mile up into the air before exploding into a shower of sparkling glitter—like firelight. A rain of fluttering gold illuminated the dim night. Rising to your feet, you extended out a hand to catch the falling glitter. The glow was warm; it dissipated at your touch.

Incredible,” you said, awestruck. Lifting your chin, you mechanically locked gazes with your fiancé’s between the bit of space that separated you two. He blushed involuntarily, but didn’t look away this time. Your natural beauty stunned him, your pale, angelic features enhanced in the shimmer of gold. To you, his amber-brown eyes were warm and tender and adoring. Cloaked by the night, he appeared handsome and unearthly, the gold glitter twinkling around him like fairy dust.

“You’re not the prince of light for nothing,” you whispered, afraid that your voice would shatter the fantasy around you.

Baekhyun nodded quietly. He found his voice, soft and low. “That’s why these are my hills. The sunlight is the richest here, and it always has the best sunsets and sunrises.”

“I wish I could see the sunrise,” you confided wistfully, but you knew that you wouldn’t have the time. Especially if something dreadful were to happen in the future—like Prophet Yesung’s vision coming true.

Steps light and easy, Baekhyun closed the distance between you two and gently grasped your hands lovingly in his. His beautiful, feminine hands were as smooth and soft as yours.

“I promise, that one day, I’ll take you to see the sunrise. Alright, Princess?” He sounded mature when he made that vow to you, and it made your heart skip a beat. He squeezed your hands. “I’ll make the best sunrise you’ve ever seen.”

“You shouldn’t be messing around with nature,” you gently , but you leaned forward to kiss his cheek gratefully. “But thank you.”

“For you, I’d break some rules,” he said wholeheartedly and grinned. The two of you shared lighthearted laughs as the magical shower of gold eventually faded, reverting back to the dim, chilly night.

For you, I’d do anything. Crossing boundaries and breaking rules—just to make you happy.
