You and Krystal ride the elevator to the ninth floor of the building. The doors ding and open and you follow Krystal out. A peeling sign points toward rooms 901-910 so you turn and make your way down the dingy hallway. Krystal stops in front of 901.

“Ready?”

You nod and both of you step inside.

The room’s bare except for a small podium in the center. Plastic chairs, the same ones decorating the reception area, line the walls. A portly man wearing a black robe stands behind the podium. As you enter, he looks up and smiles at you two.

“Welcome! Amber and Krystal?” he asks as he steps around the podium toward you two.

“Yes,” you both say in unison.

“Excellent. Just come right up here and give me your IDs.”

You slide your driver’s license over to him and Krystal does the same. He fills out a few lines on the license and looks up at both of you.

“Changing your names?” he asks.

“No,” Krystal replies firmly.

For some reason, you find that hot.

“All right. So, you both understand you’re getting a marriage license, right? And there’s a week long waiting period before you can get the marriage certificate. Just in case one of you wants to back out.”

You both nod again.

“Well, then, congratulations on completing the first step toward marriage!” the man cheerfully says as he points to the piece of paper and where you’re supposed to sign.

You scrawl your name and watch as Krystal elegantly signs hers. He stamps the license with an official looking seal and hands it to you.

“Good luck with everything!”

Krystal looks at you and picks up the paper. She slides her hand into yours and pulls you out of the room.

“Oh my gosh, Amber, we did it! We actually did it!” she squeals, jumping up and down, once you’re in the hallway.

You grin and pull her into a hug. She clasps you around the neck and suddenly gives you a swift peck on the cheek.

“You’re such a genius! Thank you! Let’s celebrate!”

She pulls back and you’re missing the feeling of her body pressed against yours.

“What do you want to do?”

“Well,” she pauses. “It’s a long weekend! Let’s leave the country!”

You look at her agog.

“Leave? Like get on a plane and leave?”

“Of course. How about a weekend trip to Cabo?”

“Er—”

She pouts and you lose your train of thought.

“Aren’t we supposed to go on a honeymoon?”

“Yeah, but you know me and my money situation.”

“Oh. Right.”

But before you can feel down, she quickly smiles and changes tack.
