PARK HAEJIN'S POV
I entered the escalator to exit my work place as my coworker keeps bugging me about the person who I'm about to have lunch with.
"It's totally a date, huh? Come on, Haejin, my friend, you can tell me it's a date. I'm not judging you. I won't tell anyone either." He said with a wink as he walked next to me.
"Ahh... No, my 'friend,' I'm serious. It's not a date." I laughed awkwardly and I just wished that he would leave me alone.
"But you said that you're eating lunch with a woman? Isn't that a date?" He questioned, it clearly seems like this guy won't get off my back unless I declare that it's a date.
"If I said that it was a date would you leave me alone?" I asked with an eyebrow raised, annoyed with how persistant he is.
"Of course, man! So it is a date?"
Why is he so interested in my personal life? Why does he have so much free time to be dancing around the office, asking others about their private life?
"Think what you want to think," I said as I got off the escalator, entering the lobby with him trailing behind me, "I'm just eating lunch with a girl."
"A girl, so not a woman? Oh jeez, Haejin.. I didn't know that you preferred younger women," I shot the man a glare, "I mean it's not like I have a problem with what you preferred! It's your relationship anyways!"
I only said that I'm eating out with a girl because I see her as a girl, like a younger sister - not a woman. It'd be weird to see your younger sister as a woman, right? Should I clarify myself to him? But if I do he won't stop asking me questions... I'll just clear up the misunderstanding next time..
"So what's the ? Can I meet her? Come on, introduce me to her, yeah? How young is she? Is she super hot? Is she tall for her age, or short? Do you have a photo of your girlfriend? Can I see how she looks like? She's probably super hot, right? I mean, with your looks, I bet you're making all the ladies - and girls swoon for you!"
I shot him a glare about to cut off his questions until he added more: "When will I expect a wedding invite from you?"
"A wedding what?" I was so startled with his question I wondered if I heard him right. A wedding invite? Me? Park Haejin passing out wedding invitations for my wedding? Please, I doubt it.
"A wedding invitation! You know, those invites you give people so that they can go to your wedding? Those things! Are you trying to hint to me that I'll be seeing a wedding invite from you soon?"
"Ah, oh yeah, I know what those are... But why are you expecting one from me? I mean I'm-"
"Because! You're probably soo in love with your girlfriend and you've been dating her for awhile now, right? I bet that marriage popped up in your mind, right? I've been hearing rumors from the company that you're dating someone for almost five years! I don't want to be rude - but isn't it time for you to settle down with someone? I mean don't take what I'm saying to heart because I'm almost thirty and I'm still single!" He rambled on and laughed awkwardly as he implied that I should get married soon because I'm thirty years old.
"Oh... Rumors... Don't trust the rumors. Anyways, I have to go. I'm going to be a bit late if I continue chatting. Goodbye." I said and exited the building with him only shouting that he should be the first few people to receive my wedding invitation.
I rolled my eyes as I started walking away. Marriage, what is he even talking about? What is the company even talking about? Me in a relationship? I'm not dating anyone. I've been single for as long as I've remembered. But I suppose that I should be married by now, since I'm almost thirty. Why is he so concerned with me getting married? And my love life! I couldn't help but sigh and felt my phone vibrate.
I checked my phone to receive a notification from the person I'm eating lunch with: "you're late, where are you? i already got a table since someone didn't show up first even though it was sOMEONE's iDEA TO EAT OUT TODAY!! man i'm not craving ing ramen. quick come fast it's ing weird for me to sit here awkwardly by myself. i bet the customers think that my date left me hanging"
I sighed but held a complicated smile on my face since I knew that I didn't have to be so stiff and formal with her. I quickly typed back: "I'm on my way. for you. We went out where you wanted to eat last week. It's not like we're dating either so you shouldn't care for it."
I quickly walked to the ramen shop that my friend was waiting at and was quickly seated by the waitress by the door. I quickly greeted my friend and sat in front of her.
"You know the attitude that you texted me with is probably the reason why it's so hard for you to date someone." She said while shrugging and focused her attention onto the menu.
I rolled my eyes and looked at the menu too, "You can order whatever you want, Ella. It's on me."
She laughed and sang, "Amazing~! Maybe I should order something spicy?"
"Hey, hey, you said you can't handle spicy food well, why torture yourself?"
"Haejin, my bro, you know me. I can't handle it but you know damn well that it's not going to stop me from eating it."
I looked at her with a baffled expression, "I find it hard to believe that you're dating someone for the longest time and you still have that crass language habit. What does Sehun see in you?" I asked and she only shrugged back at me.
"That's what I want to know too. I don't know what he really sees in me either." She laughed and continued to browse through the menu.
After we ordered she asked, "So? How was work? Work was holding you up, huh?"
I sighed and nodded, "Not necessarily work but a coworker was holding me up."
"Ohh, what did they do? Annoy you?"
"Kinda.. Okay, yeah, he was. He started bringing up marriage and all that. At first he invited me out for lunch but I refused since I already had plans with you. But he jumped to the conclusion that you were my girlfriend." I said with irritation as I took a sip of my water.
"What the heck, did he follow you to the lobby?"
"Yeah, and then when I was about to leave he brought up marriage. He hinted that I should get married soon because I'm thirty." I said with a sigh, our food came and I grabbed a quick bite of my meal, waiting for her to answer.
"Oh gross, marriage. Why would he bring up marriage though? You're not interested in marriage right? Unless you suddenly changed your mind about it." Ella said while blowing at her noodles.
"I'm not interested in marriage at all, I mean I understand that I 'should' be married because I'm old but still. I'm too busy to even handle a relationship at the moment."
"Haejin, whenever someone brings up relationships or marriage to you, you keep saying that you're 'too busy' to think of that at the time. I mean I don't really want to pry on your life since it's your life - but take a good look at yourself, are you really busy? I don't care what you do as long as you're just alive and stuff like that. But Sehun was talking to me about this the other day, when would you get married or at least date? He's somewhat convinced that you might have a secret girlfriend somewhere and the group doesn't even know about it." Ella informed me and she shrugged about it.
"You're right... But anyways, enough about me. What about you? You and Sehun? Marriage?" I said after taking a bite of my noodles.
She nearly choked on her bite and quickly grabbed the water, "Me? Marriage. Funny, you know damn well that I'm not interested in it. So don't expect me to hand out wedding invites either. I think Sehun and I are perfectly fine with our relationship right now."
"That's good." I commented and had a sip of my water.
"Hey, if you're a tad bit of being upset of that guy poking fun at you for still being single you can go to one of those matchmaking events - speed dating." She giggled at her own joke with a sly smile.
"Are you telling me that I should go to one?" I questioned her, "How did you even hear about something so bizarre? Why would you even sugges this to me in the first place."
Catching my defensive tone Ella retorted, "Hey, it's just a joke! And I heard it from these single chicks at my workplace, ya know? Like the chicks that are kinda obsessed with getting married now since they're getting 'old.'" She used both of her hands to place quotation marks when she said "old."
"...Should I actually go to one..?" My question only came out as a small mumble and she laughed.
"Hey, hey, Haejin, my man, my bro, do what ya want. It's your life. You might meet the love of your life there or someone very... very interesting."
I sighed with a complicated expression that was plastered onto my face.
"Anyways, how's sign language class? Have you been going to those classes?"
"Yeah, I haven't been going recently though. I think I'm pretty fluent so I might stop." I said with my arms crossed, with the thought of the silly matchmaking event on my head.
"Why are you even taking those classes anyways?" She asked, her chin resting onto her folded hands, "For the girl, I'm assuming?"
"That's exactly right. I want to apologize to her in sign language if I ever bump into her again."
"What's her name again? I can try to help you find her..?"
"Her name is Ahn Woori. Same age as me. I don't know where she's at in this world. Or what she's doing with her life. She's probably married and probably forgot about everything that I did to her," I said with a deep sigh, "Or maybe she still remembers me and loathes me? Who knows?"
I couldn't help but have a complicated frown on my face after saying the last part. Ella caught what I was talking about and she proceeded on with a supportive speech and moved onto the next topic. Something more light-hearted that would possibly cheer me up.
During our conversation the only thing that I had on my mind was the matchmaking event and the horrible things that I did to Woori. Would she even accept my apology if I apologized to her?
