By Your Side

“Sinb,” A muffled voice called to her. Sinb slowly opened her eyes and quickly squinted, as the light was really bright against her sensitive eyes. Her body was immensely sore, probably from the day before.

“Sinb are you alright?” She heard Yerin’s voice say.

Sinb let out a little grunt, as she was too tired to actually reply. She was a little confused on why Yerin still cared for her so much even though she had acted out of line before.

“Thank god,” Yerin sighed out in relief, “Umji said that you passed out yesterday, you need to take it easy.”

“Ok,” Sinb said, she didn’t know what else to say. Could she really say sorry for her actions yesterday; she was quite a . She knew that since she couldn’t get along with Umji, and because of her behavior, she wouldn’t ever have the same relationship that she had with Yerin before. Even so, she wanted to fix it, but the only option to actually fixing would be to get along with Umji. Sinb grimaced, she really didn’t want to start acting all buddy-buddy with Umji after everything she said yesterday and she knew that she would never be able to actually be nice to her because of her feelings towards her. She knew that Yerin wasn’t upset with her because of her attitude; in fact, Yerin was quite accustomed to it already. She knew that she was upset because of how she has been treating Umji. She already knew the answer yet she couldn’t fix it.

“Yerin, I’m sorry for what I said to you,” Sinb said, it was useless saying it as she already knew how Yerin would reply but she still wanted to say it.

“It’s ok, Sinb…” Yerin said as she sat down. “But I’m not mad at you because of what you said, you know that right?”

“Yeah…” Sinb said as she sat up in her bed.

“Why can’t you try to get along with her?” Yerin said.

“Yerin I told you why before… something about her makes me feel sick…” Sinb said.

“Yeah, but I think that that is a stupid reason,” Yerin said. “Come on, I know that this isn’t like you.”

“I know it isn’t like me, but I don’t know…” Sinb sighed, “I just haven’t been feeling good lately, you probably noticed.”

“Yeah… But that still isn’t a good reason.” Yerin said. “Is it because of stress?”

“I don’t know, but it’s making me feel really crappy so I take my anger out in a horrible way. I don’t like Umji but I don’t mean to yell at her like that. I know that's not a good excuse though.”

Eunha then walked in while looking down at the floor, she felt as if she were intruding on something but at the same time, this was important. She looked up at Sinb as she took a deep breath.

“Sinb, I heard some news about Soyoon-“

“What about Soyoon?” Sinb perked up and adjusted in the bed.

“I heard from Jihae that she left the school, probably training to become a professional dancer.”

Sinb slumped, that was good news but at the same time Sinb felt a little bitter, “But she could do that here.”

“You saw her, she already knew everything, more than you,” Yerin said to cheer her up. “She probably wanted more of a challenge or wanted to find ways outside of school to boost her stamina.”

Sinb thought about it for a little bit, it did make sense. “I hope to see her on stage soon. I can’t wait to hear from her when she becomes really famous. Where is she training?”

Eunha looked up from the ground, her hands were clasped together, and she hesitated before answering.

“She’s supposedly in the states.”

“That far?” Sinb said she didn’t sound sad, though, “That’s amazing, America is full of wonderful dancers,”

Yerin smiled, she thought that Sinb would be sad but she was wrong. Sinb looked very happy.

Sinb didn’t feel any sadness or bitterness when hearing that, she was happy for Soyoon. “I hope to hear from her soon.”

“About that…” Eunha started, “She doesn’t have a cell…”

“That’s ok, when she becomes famous then we could see her. I’m sure we’ll hear from her soon.” Sinb replied rather quickly, she was happy. No hint of sadness was present on her face; it looked like how an elder sister would react when hearing about their little sister.

“Oh, Sinb I need to tell you something,” Yerin said with a more serious tone.

“Yeah, what is it Yerin?”

“When you didn’t come to class yesterday, I got moved up to a higher class with Eunha and Yuju.”

“Wow, that’s amazing! Now you really got to work hard.”

“But,”

“But?”

“Is it ok if I can leave you alone?” Yerin said with some concern. She didn’t want to leave her best friend alone in a class when she could choose whether she can move up or not.

“Of course it’s fine,” Sinb said as if it was obvious, “If you move up then you should go up! I don’t want to keep you behind when you could be improving even more. Plus, I don’t want to take you away from Eunha.”

“Are you sure?” Yerin said. “If I move up then they’ll move Umji into that class.”

Now that was a little problem. Sinb sighed, “It’s completely fine, I’ll use that extra time to try to make up with her.” Though Sinb said that, she knew that she wouldn’t be able to. She wanted to make their relationship better so it wouldn’t be awkward or tense when they all get together. If she makes up with Umji then maybe she could completely fix her friendship with Yerin and the others.

“Hey, guys!” Yuju said as she jumped out of the elevator and into the lobby of the dorm. “I finally finished my song!”

Sowon walked out of the elevator, “This is the happiest I’ve seen her become.” She smiled brightly as she followed the energetic girl. It was quite weird to see Yuju become so energetic as she had a mature body so it was odd but weirdly cute.

“Really?” Eunha said as she stood up to meet Yuju. “Let’s hear it!”

Yuju’s dark eyes glinted as she dramatically took out her phone and turned up the volume. She passed out music sheets so everyone could follow. She pressed a file that was shown on her phone. A delicate chime-like sound on the piano started the song, and then it was followed by a more intense and catchy tune on the piano. Yuju’s voice cut through the room through the phone; everyone was mesmerized. Their eyes followed the music and their mouths moved to lip-sync to words. Eunha even started to hum halfway through. The song was put together really well; Yuju had split parts that fit beautifully.

After the song, it was quiet until Sinb whispered something,

“It’s perfect.”

Yuju puffed out her chest in pride, “Thank you.”

“You’re amazing Yuju!” Eunha said as she hugged the taller girl.

Yuju’s face was red from the compliment, “Thank you.”

Sowon joined in on the hug and gave Yuju a kiss on the cheek; it was more like a kiss a mother would give a child rather than an affectionate one.

“I’m so proud of you,” Sowon said as she hugged her tighter.

“I was thinking that maybe we can make a little group so we could sing songs out on streets, you know?” Yuju said.

“Like guerrilla performances?” Yerin said.

“That would be really fun!” Umji said as she clapped her hands together.

“But we still have to do a lot of stuff still, group name, choreography, line distribution,” Sowon said.

“Don’t worry that’s the fun part!” Yerin said as she pumped her fist. “Let’s get started, we all don’t have classes tomorrow right?”

They all nodded.

“LET”S STAY UP ALL NIGHT!” Sinb said as she and Yerin high-fived.

“I hope this goes well…” Sowon said a little worried.

“Yeah… next thing you know, our group name is going to be somewhere along the line of girlfriend…” Eunha said sarcastically.

“Guys… what is this…” Umji said as she shook her head at the list of group names.

Sowon took the list from Umji, “Guardian Angel, Hug Hug… World Peace!”

“This isn’t going well…” Sinb admitted.

“The only one that is plausible is girlfriend…” Yuju said.

“Oh my god…” Eunha said as she stifled a laugh.

“Hey, why don’t we change that a little bit? Instead of it being ‘girlfriend’, why not change it to Gfriend?” Yerin said.

“Not bad,” Sowon said, it had a nice ring to it.

“Isn’t that a little weird, though?” Eunha said, “What’s the meaning behind it?”

“Well, we are all girlfriend material,” Yerin said.

Eunha laughed, “Who said?”

“I did,” Yerin said. “Or, it could mean that there is a pair of girlfriends in the group.”

“Ew, so cringe,” Eunha said as she curled her fingers.

“Hey, why don’t you think of a name,” Yerin said with a smile, she liked having little harmless arguments with Eunha.

Eunha put her hand under her chin, “Fine, you win, I can’t of anything.”

“Gfriend it is?” Yerin said as she looked around.

“Sure, let’s go with that, it’s actually really catchy,” Sowon said.

“I’m really excited,” Yuju stated as she smiled brightly.

“I’m happy to hear that you’re excited, your music will be heard everywhere soon,” Sowon said.

Yuju looked up at her and smiled, “Thank you.”

Sowon smiled in return.

“So now who is going to choreograph the dance?” Eunha asked.

“Well, I would recommend Sinb,” Yerin said, “But I think someone else should help, it’d be hard for one person to do it alone.”

“Yerin why don’t you help?” Yuju asked.

Yerin laughed, “I at making stuff up, so I’m going to have to decline.”

“Can I recommend Umji?” Sowon said.

Sinb looked at her as if she were warning her.

“Umji is actually really good with this stuff, and plus, Sinb you can use this time to set aside your differences,” Sowon said as she crossed her arms.

Umji took a deep breath, she wasn’t exactly willing but she agreed as she did want to make up with Sinb, she wanted to forget their argument as much as possible by replacing it with better memories.

“I don’t want to regret and I don’t want you to regret either.”

“I’d be regretting nothing.”

Umji wanted to use this chance to make sure that Sinb wouldn’t regret anything.

“I look forward to working with you, Sinb,” Umji said as she turned towards Sinb. These were the first words that she said to Sinb the whole day.

Sinb looked at Umji, “Let’s make everyone proud.”

Not exactly what Umji wanted to hear but it was better than nothing. Umji couldn’t help but smile; Sinb finally spoke to her the first time today.

Sinb couldn’t look Umji in the eye, her eyes looked as innocent and pure as the day before, it made her chest hurt. She was too pure; Sinb didn’t want to taint her white heart. She didn’t want to rip her heart into pieces like she had the day before, but at the same time, she still couldn’t accept her. Sinb was feeling a little better today, that’s probably why she hadn’t gotten mad yet. She didn’t plan on getting mad, she didn’t want to repeat the same scene that happened yesterday.

“Let’s go to our dorm, so we can think of some ideas for the dance part. Yuju can you text me the file?”

“Sure,” Yuju said as she took out her phone.

“Let’s do our best,” Umji said as she smiled.

Sinb looked away, then she started to walk towards the elevator.

The others said their goodbyes as the two youngest walked away.

“Can I be in charge of the line distribution?” Sowon said, “I feel like I’ve done nothing.”

“I’ll be in charge of the outfits,” Eunha asked, “I’ve done nothing at all,”

“That would be awesome, we totally forgot about outfits!” Yerin said.

“Do you need help?” Sowon asked, “Yuju and I could help, finding matching outfits would be hard.”

“Oh it’s ok, I’ll be making them,” Eunha said brightly.

“Well, isn’t that harder? Do you need help?” Yuju asked.

“Nope, it’s fine! If I need help I’ll ask but I’m really good at sewing and making clothes.” Eunha said as she puffed out her chest.

“Eunha wanted to become a fashion designer as a child but the realized that she wanted to be a singer as she got older,” Yerin said. “I think she’d be fine. She practiced a lot as a child and still does.”

“Ok, we’ll leave it in your hands.” Sowon smiled.

“Yep!” Eunha said. “Well, we should get working! See you guys tomorrow!”

Eunha and Yerin headed up first, Eunha’s eyes sparkled as she talked about her ideas for an outfit. She was really excited about their guerrilla plans. Yerin couldn’t help but laugh at her girlfriend’s adorable personality. They entered their room and Yerin got in the shower first. Eunha got out her sketchbook and started jotting down some ideas, a while afterward she heard the bathroom door open.

“Hey, Yer-“ Eunha stopped as she turned around. She saw that Yerin was only wrapped in a short towel and dripping wet.

“Hey Eunha, do you know where the bigger towels are? And can you hand me my paj- Ow! What was that for?”

Eunha had thrown her book at her on impulse; Yerin walking out practically surprised her.

“YERIN! PUT ON SOME C-CLOTHES!” Eunha said as she covered her eyes. Her face was burning red.

“Well, I would if I could get my pj’s… plus you’ve seen me before.” Yerin said as she walked to grab her clothes and a bigger towel, which was conveniently next to Eunha. Eunha and Yerin had been to night spas many times so usually, they were used to seeing each other . Eunha was just surprised to see Yerin mostly wet and in a small towel.

“Eunha, are you getting excited? Your hot girlfriend is mostly and wet.” Yerin said softly into Eunha’s ear. She liked to girlfriend once in a while.

“YOU ERT!!!” Eunha said as she pushed Yerin away, her eyes still closed.

Yerin laughed, “Sorry, sorry, I was just teasing you. I’ll quickly put on some clothes.”

Eunha didn’t open her eyes until she heard Yerin walk back into the bathroom. Eunha sighed; her girlfriend was such a ert. She went back to her final sketches of the outfit. There were three left, which she liked. She couldn’t choose which one she wanted to actually make. One was based off the Korean gym uniform; white short-sleeved shirts and red athletic shorts, another was just a plain white short-sleeved shirt and a slightly tan skirt, and the least was more of a summer school uniform theme, a pretty (but flexible) blouse with a navy blue skirt. Eunha wrote down a little note stating that they would all match with white gym shoes.

“Oh, they look nice,” Yerin said, her head next to Eunha’s. Eunha let out a little yelp, which scared Yerin.

“Don’t sneak up on me like that!” Eunha said.

“Sorry, I thought you heard me,” Yerin said as she laughed.

Eunha looked at Yerin, she only had one thought in her head:

She’s so beautiful.

Eunha had to keep reminding herself that Yerin was hers and hers alone. Sometimes it would feel like a dream. How could someone like Jung Yerin actually be her girlfriend? Eunha would always have a sense of nostalgia whenever she and Yerin were alone. She would remember the day Yerin confessed to her. Eunha was so happy she cried, which scared Yerin. She still couldn’t believe that she and Yerin were back together. Though she didn’t expect to meet her here at the AAU, she was so surprised and happy. She felt like crying again but then realized why Yerin was there. The thought made Eunha’s heart hurt. She closed her eyes; she had to stop thinking about these things. Right now Yerin was with her, and right now they are going through happy moments. That’s all that mattered.

“Which one do you think I should make?” Eunha asked.

“Why don’t you make them all? They all see relatively easy for you to make. You’re really fast anyways so this isn’t really a challenge for you.”

“True, but I don’t want to waste time making all of them if they aren’t good enough.”

Yerin looks at her, Eunha took a real good look at her face. Her damp hair made her hair look even darker, which made her face look even paler than usual. Because of this, her moles contrasted against her bright face. Eunha loved every single mole on Yerin’s face. It was cute.

“Well, wouldn’t it be boring if we only had one outfit?” Yerin said as she back hugged Eunha. “Plus it’s extra practice for you if you make them all. It’ll be too easy for you if you do one.”

“You just want me to work more,” Eunha said as she laughed.

“You can believe whatever you want to believe,” Yerin said as she kissed Eunha’s neck.

Eunha turned around and kissed all three moles on Yerin, on her neck, her cheek, and her eyelid.

“Fine, I’ll do it. Make sure you dry your hair completely. You don’t want to catch a cold.”

“I love you,” Yerin said.

“Love you too.”

“Good job today Yuju.” Sowon said as she got into bed, “You finally told them that you finished.”

“I was so nervous,” Yuju said as she exhaled.

“Why?” Sowon asked even though she knew the answer.

“I thought they were going to reject me,” Yuju said as she lay down.

“Yuju, of course, they wouldn’t,” Sowon said. This had been the twentieth time she told Yuju in the span of about three weeks. “I told you that they would be amazed and look, they were.”

Yuju shifted on her bed to face Sowon. “Thank you, Sowon. Without you, I don’t know what I would’ve done.”

“You probably would’ve told them even without me. You’re an independent woman. You can handle things by yourself even without my help.” Sowon replied.

It was quiet for a little bit, Sowon turned to see if Yuju had fallen asleep.

“Thank you, but you’re the reason why I was able to ask them. Without you, I could never achieve my dream of sharing the music I make.” Yuju said.

“No problem, but that’s not true. Even without me you probably could’ve achieved your dream.” Sowon said as she put her phone on the nightstand.

“Sowon, thank you. I really mean it. But I probably would’ve run away like always…”

“You wouldn’t have.”

“I-“

“No, you wouldn’t have,” Sowon cut Yuju off. “I won’t let you say that. You are a strong girl.”

Sowon and Yuju had been roommates for two years so they became very close with each other. Yuju had a hard time opening up to other people because a lot of them had left her after a short time, so Yuju only had Sowon whom she could rely on. Even now, she was scared that her new friends would leave her. Yuju was quiet, her arms wrapped around Sowon’s warm body.

It’s warm.

“Thank you, Sowon,” Yuju said as she placed her face in Sowon’s chest. It was comforting; to feel the embrace of someone who cared about you. “Thank you for caring for me. For once I feel love,”

Motherly love.

“No problem,” Sowon said as she let go of the embrace. “Now let’s go to bed, I’ll show you the line distribution I thought of tomorrow. We have a busy day of planning so we better rest up.”

Yuju nodded. Sowon got up and started walking towards her bed; she stopped when she felt Yuju’s hand hold onto her arm.

“Can you sleep with me?” Yuju looked up at her with puppy dog eyes.

Sowon looked down at the younger girl, her heart did a little leap,

“Of course!” Sowon said. She feigned a sniff, “My daughter is finally learning how to ask with courage.”

Sowon tucked herself under the sheets next to Yuju. Yuju moved in closer to Sowon and Sowon ran her fingers through Yuju’s hair. She wrapped her arm around the younger girl as Yuju placed her face on Sowon’s chest. It was a quite comfortable position.

“I love you,” Sowon said as she placed a hand on Yuju’s cheek.

“I love you too,” Yuju smiled. “Goodnight,”

Both Sowon and Yuju understood that this was not a romantic exchange like any other couple, but it felt like a verbal exchange that confirmed that they would always be there for each other no matter what. Yuju finally was able to get a feel for what she always wanted; what she always needed. Sowon watched as Yuju fell asleep before closing her eyes. Sowon looked at Yuju with a sad smile. Yuju never talked about her life back at home and she would never go home during break, so Sowon only assumed that she  lacked this type of intimacy from her parents... something Sowon could relate to. Yuju fell asleep with warmth engulfing her body.

I'll always be here for you, Choi Yuna.
