Chapter 9
Rain On MeI got back home with a smile and immediately went to look for Sooyoung eonni to thank her for the lunch. I found her in the kitchen, sorting through ingredients for what I’m guessing is for dinner. I ran to her, hugging her from behind.
“Eonni! Thank you so much for the lunch! It was delicious.” Sooyoung eonni let out a laugh, turning around so she could hug me back.
“You’re welcome, Miss Eunjung. I’m glad you liked it.” She gave me one last squeeze before letting me go.
“Would you like a snack or do you want to wait for dinner? And if you want a snack, you better tell me or I’ll get mad.” Sooyoung jokingly said. I shook my head. I was still full from the lunch she packed.
“I’m fine eonni, really. I’m just going to go outside in the garden to study. It’s nice day out.” Sooyoung eonni smiled at me, nodding her head.
“Okay. But if you need anything, just let me or one of the maids know.” I assured her that I would before going upstairs to change out of my uniform and take a quick shower then going to the garden to study.
I didn’t know how long I had been studying for, but it had been so relaxing, sitting on the bench swing that swung gently with the breeze. I had never enjoyed studying as much as I did today. A maid had come out to get me for dinner. She helped me with some of my things and on the way to my room, I tried to start a conversation with her but she was strictly business. She was probably old enough to be my mom so I wasn’t surprised. But she was still nice.
I followed her to the kitchen after we put my stuff back in my room. I got there but was surprised to see Yoonsan wasn’t at the table yet even though I was told he was home from work.
“Where’s Yoonsan?” I asked the maid who brought me to the dining area.
“I think he’s in his office with his father. I’ll go tell him right now that dinner is ready.” I stood up from my chair.
“Can I go? I would like to say hello and thank Mr. Yoon for this house.” The maid seemed a bit hesitant but since I was technically her boss, she couldn’t really tell me no.
I made my way to the office, a bit nervous. I had promised myself and Edward that I would ask Yoonsan about my education today, but since his dad was here, I’m going to have to wait till later to do so. I got to slightly ajar office door, ready to knock and make my presence known when something I prayed to never hear, stopped me.
“Yes, I’m going to keep her from going to college because that’s what you want, right?” I felt my heart drop.
“I’ll even have her grades drop too.” I didn’t want to hear the rest. I stepped away from the office, running back to my room, forgetting about dinner. I closed my door, careful to not slam it no matter how much I wanted to. I threw myself onto my bed, clutching Lady to me as I cried.
I felt betrayed, like a fool. I started to think that Yoonsan might be different, that he didn’t share the same mindset as our parents. But I was wrong, so wrong. Not only was he trying to take away everything I worked hard for, but he wasn’t going to let me go to college? Who was he to say what I can and can’t do?! This is the 21st century. Women can work now, but why can’t I?!
I sat up with a newfound determination, wiping at me tears.
“You just watch. I will graduate valedictorian, my grades higher than ever and you will not keep me from college. I’ll die before I let someone try and stop me from achieving my dreams.” I got up from my bed and made my way over to my desk. I sat down, opening my textbooks and getting out my notes. I got a rubber band and tied back my hair. I’ll show them.
~Author’s Point of View~
“You, mom, and Eunjung’s parents are crazy if you think that I’m going to keep her from that! She worked hard to get where she is and I’m not going to be the one that gets in her way.” Yoonsan snapped at his father.
“We just don’t understand why though. It’s not like you’re going to lock her up forever, keep her from going out. It’s just school.” Mr. Yoon rolled his eyes.
“To you, it’s just school, but it’s more than that for her. Isn’t it enough that either of us agreed to this marriage? That we both so willingly moved into this house? If I wanted to, I could go back to France and even send her away to America so we can get away from this, but no. I stayed, she stayed, why can’t you all just leave her be?” Yoonsan felt like he was talking to a brick wall in an Armani suit.
“San, it’s-“ Yoonsan cut his father off immediately.
“Dad, just, leave.” Yoonsan sighed out. He moved and held the door to the office open, waiting for his father to leave. Thankfully, he left without another word.
Yoonsan run a hand over his face, trying to roll out the knots in his shoulders that seemed to always appear when he had to talk to his father. Once he felt somewhat relaxed and cooled off, he went to the kitchen. He saw that the table was set but didn’t see Eunjung. He stopped a passing maid, the oldest of them all.
“Where’s Eunjung?” The maid seemed confused.
“She went to go and get you.” Now Yoonsan was confused.
“But, I didn’t see her.”
The maid saw another maid come down the stairs and stopped her.
“Yes, sunbaenim?” She asked, after bowing to Yoonsan.
“Did you see Miss Eunjung up there?” The other maid nodded her head.
“She was in her room. I think she’s studying. I told her dinner was ready but she told that she didn’t feel hungry.” The maid was dismissed and she left to go do another chore.
“Would you like me to go and fetch her, Master Yoon?” Yoonsan shook his head.
“I’ll go. I want to see if she’s feeling okay.” The maid bowed to Yoonsan before walking away. Yoonsan made his way upstairs, stopping in front of the closed door to Eunjung’s room. He wondered briefly if they would be fine when they move into the master bedroom together but quickly shook those thoughts out of his head.
He knocked on Eunjung’s door, about to call out to her when he heard her say from inside “It’s open.” He took that as his cue to go in. He opened to door, only allowing half of his body to enter. He was surprised to see her sitting at her desk, studying but then smiled a little at her dedication.
“Eunjung?” He noticed her stiffen a little before looking up at him, face bare of any expression.
“Yes?” He was thrown off by her distant tone.
“Um, dinner is ready.” Eunjung nodded her head but made no move of getting up.
“I know but I’m not hungry.” She then turned her attention back to her books and notes.
Yoonsan could sense the cold shoulder he was receiving and was confused. Did something happen at school? Has he done something? Was it because he couldn’t finish dinner with her yesterday? He thought that she was fine with it and if she had said that she wasn’t or showed any indication of it, he would’ve finished dinner with her.
“Is everything okay?” Yoonsan wondered. Eunjung nodded her head.
“Everything is fine. Could you apologize to Sooyoung eonni for me though? I’m sure the meal is delicious but I would like to study right now.” Yoonsan could tell that he wasn’t going to get anything else out of her and he was actually a little upset.
He went back to the kitchen, but went directly into the kitchen to see Sooyoung. She was obviously already close with Eunjung from the way she called her ‘eonni’.
“Yah, San, why aren’t you and Miss Eunjung eating dinner? If you want the two of you to get along, you’ll have to at least start having meals together.” Sooyoung finally took notice of Yoonsan’s expression and went into what Yoonsan and other people who know Sooyoung like to call her ‘mama bear’ mode.
“What’s wrong? Was it your dad?” Yoonsan sighed heavily, propping his arms onto the island in the middle of the kitchen, holding his head up with his hand.
“Yes and no.”
“Well you need to be more specific if you want my help.”
Yoonsan sighed again, feeling a headache coming on.
“It’s just, my parents and Eunjung’s parents are pushing for her to stay home after high school. They don’t want her going to college even though Eunjung worked so hard in school. She wants to go to college and I don’t want to stop her. It’s just stress from them even though we agreed to this agreement.” Sooyoung hummed as she made tea, showing that she was listening.
“And then Eunjung, by the way, did she seem upset about anything?” Yoonsan asked Sooyoung who shook her head, placing the mug in front of him once the tea was done.
“Did she say anything, this morning?” Sooyoung thought about that before snapping her fingers.
“!” It surprised Yoonsan who almost spilled the tea on himself.
“She asked me this morning before leaving to tell you that she said good morning and hoped you had a good day. I guess I forgot.” Yoonsan was surprised to hear that Eunjung said that after the way she treated him just now.
“Did she seem…off, when she got home from school?” Sooyoung thought about how Eunjung acted when she saw her and shook her head.
“No, she was perfectly fine. Why? Did she say something? Wait, where is Eunjung?” Sooyoung looked over the counter and saw that both plates were untouched.
“No she just…gave me the cold shoulder basically. I don’t know why though.” Yoonsan sighed. Sooyoung chuckled at this.
“San, when it comes to relationships, it’s always your fault.” Yoonsan was thrown off by this.
“A girl is never wrong unless she’s wrong.” Yoonsan’s expression blanked.
“What?” Sooyoung laughed.
“It’s confusing, I know. Us girls are just confusing creatures.” Yoonsan shook his head, taking a sip of his tea.
“Just give Eunjung some space for a bit and don’t force anything from her. Everything will be fine.” Sooyoung assured him.
“Thanks for the talk, noona. I’m going to take my plate to the office. Father gave me more work.” Yoonsan rolled his eyes.
“Anything for you, little brother. I’m going to bring Eunjung’s plate to her. Maybe she’ll tell me what’s wrong.”
“If she doesn’t tell me, her fiancé, why would she tell you?”
“Because us girls love talking the ones we’re in a relationship with.” Yoonsan just shook his head, grabbing his plate before leaving to his office. He’ll see about texting Moonkyu or Junhyuk tomorrow to get their take.
