Meadows and Sunsets

A Penny for a Memory

Chanyeol hears his doorbell ring,

“Chanyeol, open up!”

He gets the door and to his surprise, he sees his friend all dressed up like he’s going to a photoshoot in the Bahamas. “Ya! Sehun, what are you doing here so early?”

“So early? Don’t you remember that you promised me that we would visit the beach once you quit your job?”

“Well, I did promise that but, I didn’t know it was going to be today...”

“Get dressed up, then! I’m quite excited. It’s going to be a long drive.”

Sehun and Chanyeol have been neighbours since Chanyeol got his job at the government. Sehun, on the other hand, works as a barista at the local coffee shop. Chanyeol met him after he surrendered his memories – well, that’s what he remembers now. It was a gloomy day and Chanyeol couldn’t keep his worries to himself so he walks straight up to Sehun’s apartment and rings his doorbell, he then tells Sehun,

“Hi, I’m Chanyeol. I’m afraid I’ve surrendered my memories, would you like to tell me yours?”

Sehun ends up cracking into a long laugh but, after he realized that Chanyeol was not pranking him, he lets him in. That was also the same day Sehun has lost the Chanyeol he used to know. They have been friends since highschool but, as soon as Chanyeol decided to work for the government, Sehun soon became simply his neighbour. Sehun had to climb his way back into Chanyeol’s life. It wasn’t as easy as he thought because the lad was indeed stubborn and moody but, he wanted to and so, he did.

Chanyeol came down all clad up in his black ripped jeans and loose shirt, a far style from the usual coat-and-tie that he wears to work. “Let’s go, shall we?”

“Wow! You look just like...” Sehun cannot say it, of course. He couldn’t and shouldn’t tell him what kind of person he was.

“I look just like what?”

“Me, of course! You look as good looking as I am now.”

Chanyeol smirks, “C’mon! Take the wheels today for me, okay?” He throws his car keys to Sehun and rides immediately at the passenger’s side so that Sehun will be forced to drive all the way to the beach.

It was indeed a long drive, Chanyeol was almost falling asleep until something seemed a little familiar – the meadows. It was the same as that in his memory; he tells Sehun to pullover to the side of the highway. He gets down from the car and started walking towards it,

“Chanyeol! What are you doing?”

“Come on!”

“What?” He asks but, he still followed him through.

“I remember this! I remember watching the sunset here with this boy and we...we just walked together but, as soon as I looked back, he was gone. Like, poof! Gone!” He tell with matching hand movements.

“Did you get your first memory yesterday?”

Chanyeol smiles warmly in reply. He stands in the middle of the meadows, closes his eyes, and pictures the memory dancing in his mind – he feels the breeze, and the heavy colors of the sunset, the vivid yellows, oranges, pinks, and purples, and that’s when he remembers the boy. The boy was short, he has this brunette hair that kept shining as he stood before the sun, his hands were slender and small – and, it fit his perfectly. That was all he could remember, well, for now.

Who must he be? He thinks.

Soon after that long drive and some walking by the shore, they have finally found the perfect spot. It was just right, it had plentiful light from the sun but, not too much to hurt them or make them sweat. Sehun layed down the picnic mat and brough out a drink from the basket Chanyeol was holding, he sits comfortably as Chanyeol was left standing on his own, looking curiously as the majestic blues of the sea and of the sky. Maybe, this will help him remember – maybe, this will help him feel. However, it wasn’t enough, he knows it isn’t. As he sits next to Sehun, he closes his eyes and he sees it once again. The more he thought of it, the more it made him believe that they were his own.

On their way back, the sun did its routine - it was setting down gloriously and on the passenger seat, there he was. Park Chanyeol was admiring the sunset that he thought he could only see in his memory. He rolled the windows down, stretched his hand out and played with the rays of the waning sun as the breeze blows his hair, he giggles a little until Sehun notices him and says,

"Chanyeol, what are you doing?"

"I am remembering," He says,

I am remembering.
