Beliefs and Proofs
A Penny for a MemoryThe next day, Jongdae brings Baekhyun to the meadows near the beach. It was a weird favour to ask but, after the success of last night’s concerto, Jongdae couldn’t say no.
“What are we doing here?”
“I just wanted to see if this place is real and I guess, it is...” He closes his eyes and takes in the fine breeze of the morning sun. He inhales the daylight and exhales nothing but, air.
“Is this what you’ve been dreaming of?”
“I’ve been dreaming about many things...The piece last night, I don’t know where it came from but it unusually felt familiar.”
“You mean, you didn’t write it?”
“I don’t know, Jongdae. I don’t know. All I know is that I played it last night like it wasn’t my first time playing it, and that guy, Chanyeol. He feels exactly like the piece I played – bizarre yet, familiar, and comforting.”
“Do you think he’s someone from your past?”
“The moment I saw him that night at the entrance, something felt different. I tried to recall anything but, nothing came to me. I couldn’t find him anywhere inside my brain but, I may have found him someplace else.”
“Baekhyun, you can talk to him you know...But, nothing can be permanent. You’ll be leaving tomorrow.”
“It’s just that my senses – that may have learned by heart – remembers him. I have to talk to him, again... I just want to know, Jongdae. At least, before I leave again.”
“Okay, I’ll call Luhan and ask him.”
That morning, it was Chanyeol’s turn to knock on Sehun’s door.
“Good morning, Sehun!” He smiles widely, showing his set of pearly white teeth.
Sehun covers his eyes and acts as if he was blinded by Chanyeol’s excited attitude, “What is it?”
“Come with me!”
“Where?”
“I know a memory expert, he might help us.”
“Will you buy me food?”
“Hmmm...”
“Just say yes!”
“Okay, then.”
Chanyeol drives his car this time and as they were on the road all he could think of was the possibility of remembering – a memory or even a moment.
In such a crazy twist of fate, Luhan parked his car by the sidewalk a few minutes after the two left; Baekhyun alighted from the passenger side and walked towards Chanyeol’s door. He knocks but, there was no answer. He tries once more. Then, he tries again but, it seems like the house was empty. Baekhyun got tired and went back to the car,
“He isn’t there?” Luhan asks.
“I think so.”
“Maybe, he went out with Sehun.”
“Do you have Sehun’s number?”
“No, I don’t. I’m sorry.”
“It’s okay, maybe, it just isn’t meant.”
“It’s such a spur of the moment, you know. You, asking a favour like this. Have you known Chanyeol before or are you interested in his legal services? You know he’s a good lawyer. Actually, one of the best.” Luhan shares proudly.
Baekhyun freezes as he hears the word lawyer, “He’s a lawyer?”
“Yeah, I think he graduated from the same university as ours.”
“Yeah, I remember you now! You’re the guy who was always with Sehun...”
“Huh?” Luhan became baffled all of a sudden.
“Oh, crap. I wasn’t supposed to say that wasn’t I?”
“Say what?”
“Did you also sell your memory?”
“Yes, in exchange for working for the government.”
“Crap! I’m sorry! I didn’t mean to... It’s just that you and Sehun – you guys were friends back then.”
“We were?”
“Yeah, and you two were quite close. Some people would even call you HunHan.”
“Baekhyun, are you sure it was Sehun because you won’t believe this but, I think my senses may have remembered him...”
“You know what, I believe you, Luhan.” Baekhyun smiles and Luhan felt surprised that someone believed in him without having to show a proof. “I think, my senses remember him as well.”
“Chanyeol?”
Baekhyun nods and smiles, and if he could only see himself, he would know that his cheeks were downright blushing. Luhan says cheerfully,
“Let’s wait for them here?”
"Okay, then."
And so they waited as if they weren't waiting for their whole lives.
