Always A Bridesmaid Never A Bride

Wedding Crashers

The next morning Dahyun and Sua met up with Yeseul at the bridal shop.

“I’m so happy you are here!” Yeseul grabbed one of Dahyun’s arms and led her into the bridal shop. Sua awkwardly followed close behind. Inside the store they met Yeseul’s other bridesmaid. “This is my good friend Jayoung. Jayoung, this is Dahyun”

Jayoung stood up and shook her hand “I’ve heard so much about you”

Dahyun just simply shook her hand and smiled.

“My name is Sua” Sua tried to put herself into the conversation but no one seemed interested in her.

“Well” Yeseul nodded “I’m going to go try on my dress and see how the alterations have been going. Your dresses are in the changing rooms for you all to try on. If there are any fitting issues than ask one of the tailors” Then she was off to try on her own gown, leaving Sua and Dahyun with the other bridesmaid.

“So you’re Jungkook’s friend from high school?” Jayoung asked.

“Yeah”

“And you two never…” Jayoung paused thinking Dahyun would understand where she was going.

Dahyun looked at Sua and then back at her “Never what?”

“Dated” Jayoung finished “Did you?”

Dahyun let out an awkward laugh “What? Where did you get that idea?”

Jayoung shrugged “Just seems likely. I mean, he does mention you quite a bit”

“We are really good friends, always been”

“Then why haven’t you two spoken for four years?” It was starting to sound like an interview.

“Just been busy I guess” Dahyun told her.

Sua could only see this conversation getting worse. “You two should try on your dresses. You know, before Yeseul gets back”

Dahyun and Jayoung agreed and then slipped into their own dressing rooms.

-

After a few moments Sua knocked on the door to Dahyun’s dressing room. “Everything okay in there?”

Dahyun opened the door “Can you zip me up?”

“Sure” Sua went into the dressing room and shut the door behind her. “Wow” She took in the sight of her friend in the dress “That is one hideous dress”

“You think so?” Dahyun examined it in the mirror “I didn’t think it was that bad”. The dress was a pink and purple mermaid style gown that puffed out at the bottom. It was matronly and ugly.

“Well you know what they say” Sua said “The bridesmaid dresses are made to make the bride look prettier”

“Whatever, just get me out of this thing so we can leave” Dahyun complained.

-

Outside of Dahyun’s dressing room they found Yeseul in her dress with Jayoung telling her how pretty she looked. Dahyun did have to admit it, she looked gorgeous. The dress looked simple and classy, perfect for any bride.

“Just gorgeous Yeseul!” Jayoung cheered.

Yeseul seemed uninterested in Jayoung’s compliments. She seemed extremely bored until her eyes caught Dahyun. “Oh Dahyun! What do you think?”

“Me?” Dahyun pointed to herself.

“Yeah you!” Yeseul spun around and did a few poses. “What do you think?”

Dahyun nodded “It looks good”

“Good” Yeseul didn’t seem to like her choice in words. “Sua, what do you think?”

Sua was just happy she finally acknowledged her existence. “You look beautiful!”

Yeseul smiled. “Thank you Sua”

“If that’s all you needed us for today I think we’re going to get going.” Dahyun told her.

Yeseul shook her head “You can’t go! We still have to pick out the cake!”

“You don’t need us for that” Dahyun argued

“Nonsense, I need some perspective”

Sua grinned “Well, I’m not going to say no to cake tasting”

Dahyun gave in “All right”

-

Meanwhile, Jungkook and his groomsmen were trying on their suits.

V couldn’t help but play around. “Name’s Bond, James Bond” He pretended to hold a gun and shoot Jimin.

Jimin fell on the ground and pretended to die.

“Would you two stop playing around” Jungkook insisted. He was fixing his tie in front of the mirror.

“Can’t help it” Jimin said while getting off the floor. “These suits make me feel like a secret agent”

Jungkook laughed at him. “You look more like a penguin than a secret agent”

Jimin stood next to Jungkook in front of the mirror. “Were you surprised to see Dahyun yesterday?”

“Very” Jungkook sighed “I don’t know where Yeseul got the idea to invite her”

V pulled off his tie and loosened the collar of his shirt “It’s your fault. You’re the one who keeps talking about her all the time”

“I do not”

“Do too” Jimin jumped in “Just admit you still have feelings for her”

Jungkook shook his head “I’m getting married. I’ve clearly moved on.”

“Uh huh, sure you have” V mumbled.

-

“Where is he?” Yeseul looked at her phone anxiously.

“Let’s just go in without him” Jayoung told her. “He can join us when he gets here”

Yeseul sighed “All right fine, let’s go”

Dahyun and Sua followed them into the cake shop. Inside the shop there was a large table set up just for them with bite size samples.

“Oooh, this looks yummy!” Sua smiled.

The chef walks in and gestures for them all to sit. “I have three different flavors for you all to try. We have vanilla, coconut, and marble.”

Yeseul tries the flavors and then stops to think. “Coconut” she announces.

Dahyun felt a bit awkward speaking up but she decided to just go for it. “Yeseul, I think Jungkook would really like the vanilla”

“Vanilla?” She looked at her like she was crazy “No, I think I know my fiancée, and he likes coconut”

Just in that moment Jungkook came rushing in with V and Jimin close behind. “Sorry I’m late” He approached Yeseul and gave her a kiss on the cheek.

“Dahyun, how was the dress fitting?” Jimin sat down across from her next to V.

“Good” Dahyun told them “How was the suit fitting?”

V smiled “I look good in a suit, Dahyun you’re going to love it”

Jungkook sat down in-between Dahyun and Yeseul. But before he could say hello to Dahyun, Yeseul shoved a piece of coconut cake into his mouth.

Dahyun couldn’t help but feel like Yeseul did it on purpose.

“What do you think baby?” Yeseul awaited his response.

He slowly chewed and then reached for water. “It’s okay”

Yeseul pouted “You don’t like it?”

Jungkook shrugged “It’s not that. What other flavors are there?”

“Just vanilla and marble” she told him.

“Why not vanilla?” Jungkook asked.

“Honey” Yeseul talked to him as if he was a child “Vanilla won’t go with the frosting we picked out. Don’t you want our cake to taste good with its frosting?”

Jungkook obviously didn’t want to say no to her so he gave in “Coconut it is then.”

Dahyun rolled her eyes.

The chef was talking with Yeseul and Jayoung about the design of the cake while Jungkook was stuffing his face with the leftover cake samples.

“Slow down or you’ll choke” Dahyun whispered to him.

He looked up at her and laughed.

Dahyun noticed some frosting on his nose so she picked up a napkin and started wiping it. “You’re such a mess” As she wiped his face she got close enough to examine his face. “You really haven’t changed much”

Jungkook was staring back at her “Neither have you”

Then the realization came in that people may be staring at them so she pulled away.

-

After the cake consultation everyone parted their own ways. Sua and Dahyun were sitting in Rapmonster’s living room watching TV.

“Namjoon! Hurry, it’s about to start!”  Dahyun called.

Rapmon came running over with a bowl of popcorn. “I’m here calm down” He squeezed himself in-between Dahyun and Sua on the couch.

Sua started blushing bright red.

“Popcorn?” he offered her.

Sua nodded and grabbed a handful.

Then the doorbell rang.

 “Not it!” Rapmon called out.

“What do you mean ‘not it’? This is your house” Dahyun grumbled.

“Not it!” Sua shouted.

Dahyun frowned. “Really? Can you at least pause the movie?”

Rapmon refused “Hurry and run back”

Dahyun made her way over and opened the door.

“Hey Dahyun” V was standing there with Jimin and Jungkook. “Wanna come out and play?”

Dahyun looked down at her sweatpants and old t-shirt. “Uhh”

“Who is it?” Rapmon shouted

“Hurry and get dressed” Jimin commanded.

“Okay, just wait one second” Dahyun walked back into the living room. “Jimin, V and Jungkook are here. They want to go out”

Sua slouched “Ugh, I don’t want to go out”

“She can stay here with me” Rapmon offered.

Dahyun lowered her eyebrows “Are you sure?”

“Yeah, we’ll just watch the movie” he told her.

Sua smiled, she seemed to like the idea.

“Okay, call me if you need anything” She told Sua.

Dahyun quickly got dressed and left with the boys. “Where are we going?” Dahyun asked.

“To remember the good old days” Jimin told her.

They walk all the way to their old high school. “Oh fun, you brought me to the one place I promised myself I’d never return to” Dahyun said sarcastically.

V pulled out a key from his back pocket and opened the door.

“Where did you get that?” Dahyun asked.

“This?” V held up the key. “I’ve always had it”

Inside it was dark and abandoned. Jungkook found two empty trash cans and rolled it forward. “You know what we have to do right?”

Dahyun smiled “Trash can racing?”

The rules of the game were simple. One person gets into the can and the other pushes. Whoever makes it to the other end of the hallway first, wins.

The teams were Jungkook and Dahyun against V and Jimin. Dahyun braced herself inside one can and V got into the other.

“On your mark, get set, go!” V called out.

Jungkook and Jimin pushed the other two as hard as they could and let them roll until they hit the wall on down on the other side of the hallway.

Dahyun got there first “WE WON!” she shouted.

Jungkook helped pull her out of the trashcan “Are you okay?”

She nodded “Just a bit dizzy” she started to fall but Jungkook caught her.

“Stay still” He held her until the dizziness passed.

“I’m okay” she assured him.

Next they all walked to their old science classroom where they first met. Inside they found their old desks still where they left them. The chairs were all put away so the group sat on the table tops. Dahyun sat next to Jungkook and across from Jimin.

“I remember the day when Dahyun first entered this classroom. I tried so hard to be her friend but she was so mean to me” V said.

Dahyun nodded “I’m sorry I was so mean to you. I had a guard up but you really helped me take it down.”

“I’m going to cry” Jimin joked.

“It’s true” Dahyun lightly punched him. “You guys were my first real friends”

Then Jimin and V whispered something to each other.

“What are you two talking about?” Jungkook asked.

“Nothing” Jimin jumped down from the table top and V followed “We’re just going to go check out the cafeteria. Be right back”

“Okay?” Dahyun questioned their suspicious move.

Soon they were alone. The awkward silence was almost impenetrable.

“Yeseul seems nice” Dahyun mentioned.

“Yeah she is” Jungkook nodded. “But what about you? Do you have a boyfriend?”

Dahyun was quick to respond “No, no boyfriend”

The awkward silence continued.

“What about work?” Dahyun tried to save the conversation.

“I’m thinking about opening up my own restaurant” he told her.

“That sounds amazing!”

“You really think so?” Jungkook smiled “Yeseul thinks it’s a terrible idea. She says it’ll just put me in debt”

“Na, you should go for it!”

“Wow” he stopped talking and just stared at her.

“What?” She widened her eyes.

“Nothing” He looked down at his feet “It’s just really nice to hear someone be supportive for once.”

His comment made her feel awful, she knew she wasn’t treating him right but it wasn’t her place to say anything. All she could say was “You should’ve picked vanilla”

“Excuse me?”

“You hate coconut. Why did you let her pick that flavor?”

Jungkook let out a short chuckle “I don’t really care what flavor the cake is”

“You love cake!” She protested

He stopped and thought for a moment “I guess I should’ve said something”

Dahyun decided to change the subject “Do you remember Oprah?”

“Our baby” he laughed “How could I forget?”

“That’s how we met, taking care of a baby doll called Oprah”

“It was my excuse to talk to you” Jungkook was looking straight at her, not looking away for even a second. “I really missed you Dahyun”

His stare was making Dahyun feel weak. She decided to forget all the things keeping them apart; the wedding, the fiancée, all of it. In this moment it was just the two of them, and that’s all that mattered. Without thinking about the consequences, she leaned in and kissed him.

She was about to pull away when Jungkook kissed her back. He put his hand on her cheek making her feel secure and loved. She wanted the kiss to never end, but her thoughts were quickly finished when Jungkook pulled away.

“I’m sorry” He looked confused and upset. “We should go”

All Dahyun could do was nod. And that’s all she could do for the rest of the way home.

-

When she got home she climbed upstairs and collapsed face-first on the bed.

“How was your night?” Sua asked.

“Rrrfmmssmsna!” Dahyun mumbled.

“What?” Sua rolled her friend over “Repeat that”

“I kissed him!”
