With the help of Youngbae’s comforting hand patting my back, I was slowly coming back to my senses. Of course the sight of his mutilated body was unbearable but it was not the only reason… The most painful thing was that I knew I was responsible of his current condition. If I had not left him alone back then… If I did not only think about myself nothing of all this would had happen… I really was a coward and what have I done during all these years? I tried to find him tirelessly and for what? What was the main reason behind all this? Was I trying to find him to help him or to redeem myself? Now more than ever, the answer was blurry in my mind.

I could perfectly see in my mind the scene of our goodbyes years ago. He was still a kid and so was I in appearance. He was not the first human I had to take care off but the relationship we had was different from what I’ve known before. As an angel I was supposed to be invincible, insensitive to the pain and more important I had to stay as emotionless as possible. But it was impossible with this kid… The first time I met him was at an orphanage and for this mission I had to turn myself into a child. It was a small orphanage in a not well-known city next to Seoul and life seemed quite easy there which made me wonder why I was needed. Lee Seunghyun was a seven years old boy, he was bright and even though life has not always been tender with him, you could see joy in his eyes. And his smile, I will forever remember the smile he gave me when I arrived at the orphanage.

But soon I started to understand the reason why I was sent of earth. Only two months after I became myself an ‘orphan’, the orphanage had to close after the death of the owner. His wife not being eager of continuing his good deed decided to sell the house and give away the kids. It was not hard to find a family for the younger ones but for the ones above five years old, it was an all other story. Seunghyun and I were the only ones remaining after one week and the widow finally decided to do something for us. One morning two strange men arrived at the orphanage and after giving some money and whispering some words to the widow, they took us in their car without explaining anything. It was the beginning of our nightmare.

It was obvious they had no intention to take good care of us. But Seunghyun refused to see the truth and remained optimistic. He was never protesting and was even smiling to these guys. I did not know if he was doing this because he wanted to or because he was smarter than me but the fact was that he was not locked up with me in the cage. But then he started to rebel as he was understanding what they were asking him to do was not correct. Even though he was only a kid he was well-raised and he soon refused to do what they were asking him to. I knew it was something big from the look on his face when he was coming back from outside at the end of the day but he never accepted to tell me about it. The only thing I knew was that it was obviously painful and I could easily tell he was ashamed of it. But he did not come back in the cage with me. No, they had other plans to punish him. He started to disappear during the night and I could hear him cry sorrowfully. One night I decided to use my ‘powers’ to see what they were actually doing to him. It did not take long to me to open the cage and to stand quietly in the dark corner of the room. What I was watching at that time was the most awful thing I had ever seen.
