Mimi let out a dreamy sigh as she rested her head against the palm of her hands. Her sight was focused on the one guy who was currently winning the friendly basketball game. When he managed to shoot the ball through the hoops, she automatically sat straight up and began to applaud.
“Nam Woo Hyun, why are you so cool?” Mimi asked with another sigh. Sadly, the captain of the basketball team, who was also one of the most popular guy at school, never noticed her presence.
As she kept staring at his idol-like stature, she noticed someone else glancing towards her. With his childish grin, Lee Sung Yeol kept waving at her. She acknowledged his presence by waving back, waiting for her best friend to come over.
“Did you see me? Our team won because of me,” Sung Yeol said as he stretched his hand out to her.
“It was all because of the captain, not you,” Mimi spoke as she took her water bottle and handed it over to Sung Yeol. The two had been friends for a long time to the point where they could understand one another without having to say things out loud.
Sung Yeol made an annoyed face before he drank directly from the bottle, not even bothering how his lips touched the tip. “You should stop fangirling. It’s not healthy for you,” he mumbled.
“You’re right!” Mimi spoke as she got a sudden revelation. “Maybe I should just confess to him? Sung Yeol oppa, you need to help me out.”
Sung Yeol almost spilled the water from his mouth. He gave the girl an abrupt look. “Why?”
“Cause you’re close to him. Please be my messenger and tell him that I’m his fan,” Mimi asked as he eyes started to shimmer with excitement. “Make sure he receives my message.”
Sung Yeol hated it – because her message was not directed towards him.
As days passed by, Mimi continued to give more messages to Sung Yeol, asking him to pass it on to Woo Hyun. Honestly, she didn’t know if he actually relayed it or not. But when she saw Sung Yeol and Woo Hyun talking together, she couldn’t help but smile happily.
Due to her joy, she failed to see a ball that was suddenly flying towards her direction. It managed to hit her on the head as she landed on the ground with a loud thud. The pain stung for sure as she felt her cheek being cut by the sharp edge of the book she was carrying.
“Are you alright?” Woo Hyun’s husky voice suddenly asked her. His gentle tone could make her melt in an instant. And being the gentleman he was known as, he reached out a hand to her cheeks, seeing the scratch she had from the book.
Mimi could feel her heart thudding faster and faster at the approaching hand. She even squinted her eyes shut; talking to Woo Hyun was already like a dream come true. But now that he was worried, it was even better. However, she was never able to feel his touch. What she felt was a pair of warm hands grabbing hold of her wrist as her entire body was being pulled up.
“She’s fine,” Sung Yeol had answered on her behalf as he turned to Woo Hyun with a glare. “You don’t need to worry.”
“W-wait, oppa!” Mimi called out as Sung Yeol continued to take her further away from Woo Hyun. She could only catch a final glimpse of Woo Hyun’s confused face as Sung Yeol pulled her away.
When Sung Yeol had brought her to the infirmary, Mimi turned to him with an angry frown. She sat down on the empty bed as Sung Yeol was busy looking through the drawers.
“Oppa, I was this close,” Mimi complained as she made a motion with her fingers to indicate the close distance between her and Woo Hyun. “Why did you have to ruin it? Did he even receive the message?”
“Yes, he received it,” Sung Yeol mumbled in annoyance as he never turned to look at her. His head was still buried behind the cabinets as he rummaged through all the different medicines there.
She eyed him suspiciously, noticing his weird behavior. “You know that I like him.”
“I don’t like you liking him,” Sung Yeol muttered as he finally turned to face her. His cheerful persona was replaced by a serious look. The gaze of his eyes pierced right through her as she suddenly felt her heart race faster.
With a swift motion, he got up from his squatting position. He walked over to her and carefully tilted her chin upwards. With that stern look, he studied the cut on her cheeks before he took the band-aid and gently placed it on top of her wound.
“Woo Hyun is not the kind of guy who fits you,” he said with a lower voice.
Mimi slightly pouted at his harsh truth. She knew that her best friend would bluntly speak his mind out without filtering the truth. That is when she got another idea.
“Why don’t you confess for me instead?”
“Are you crazy?”
“If he says no, I’ll really give up and just admire him from afar,” Mimi spoke. “It can be your final message.”
Sung Yeol raised an eyebrow with interest. The idea didn’t seem so bad after all. Maybe he could stop her stupid crush once and for all by being her messenger for one last time.
“Woo Hyun, I need to tell you something,” Sung Yeol said while he and Woo Hyun were resting on a bench after another basketball game.
“What’s with that tense voice? Are you confessing to me?” Woo Hyun joked and laughed. But seeing Sung Yeol’s stiff expression, his eyes grew wide in surprise.
“Not me. I’m confessing to you on behalf of Mimi,” Sung Yeol grunted as he scratched his head in disbelief. Why did he actually agree on this?
“Mimi? Is that the girl who always sticks to you like glue?” Woo Hyun asked with a grin.
“Yes,” he nodded depressingly. See, everyone else knew they were always together? Why couldn’t Mimi realize it as well?
“Isn’t she the girl you like?” Woo Hyun asked, guessing right once again.
Sung Yeol gulped as his cheeks started to blush furiously. Maybe he was that easy to read. Yet, there was one person who couldn’t read him at all.
“Ah, so she likes me?” Woo Hyun questioned as he nodded his head. “I guess I should reply her then.”
“Wait, what? You’re not gonna tell me?” Sung Yeol asked, surprised when Woo Hyun suddenly got up.
“These things are quite private, don’t you think?”
Sung Yeol could only let out a frustrated sigh. This was not what he expected at all. What if Woo Hyun actually accepted her? Mimi was kinda cute after all, it’s pretty hard to say no to her. Did he actually become Mimi’s love messenger at the expense of his own feelings for her? He was foolish indeed.
“Mimi?”
The girl spun around, surprised to see Woo Hyun standing at the door of the empty classroom. She was nervous all of a sudden, not believing this was real. When she kept pestering Sung Yeol to give her message, she didn’t expect he’d actually be successful at it.
“Y-Yes?” she couldn’t help but stutter when the guy entered the classroom to approach her. Somehow it just felt uncomfortable because of the anxiety.
“Is Sung Yeol being a love messenger on your behalf?” Woo Hyun asked as he stood in front of her.
She gave a small nod, too embarrassed to look him in the eye. Just hearing the term itself felt so awkward to her.
Woo Hyun flashed a charming smile at her. “Today, I’ll be the love messenger instead,” he began.
“What?” Mimi looked up at him with a confused look.
“I like you…”
Woo Hyun paused as he watched the change in the girl’s expression. Surely she must’ve not expected this at all. But what he noticed most was the fact that the girl did not even smile as he said that. So he decided to continue.
“…That’s Sung Yeol’s message for you.”
Mimi widened her eyes in disbelief as she suddenly felt her heart beating furiously. Strange, it didn’t beat this hard when she thought it was Woo Hyun’s confession. She was supposed to want to hear those words from Woo Hyun, but why was she happier when it was supposedly Sung Yeol’s message?
“Do you mean that?” Mimi asked faintly as her voice was nearly a whisper. Her hands kept clenching against her chest, hoping it could stop the fluttering feeling. She wasn’t supposed to feel this way for her best friend.
“Why don’t you ask him yourself?” Woo Hyun answered as he cocked his head towards the classroom door, seeing how Sung Yeol was already watching them in panic. He motioned for the taller guy to come in, seeing the cold sweat on Sung Yeol’s forehead.
Once he walked in with that baffled look on his face, he could only notice Woo Hyun’s playful smirk and Mimi’s red face. Before he could ask what was going on, Woo Hyun just left the classroom, leaving him alone with his best friend.
“Mimi, what happened?” he asked her worriedly as he placed both arms on her shoulder. He had no idea what was going on.
“I have one final message to deliver,” Mimi answered.
Sung Yeol grunted as he let go of her. “Seriously? He was just here, why can’t you just tell him yourself?”
“Please tell Lee Sung Yeol oppa that he’s an idiot,” Mimi spoke as she eyed him, seeing the frown forming on his face. At that sight, she couldn’t help but let out a small chuckle.
The reason why Sung Yeol always hated it whenever she talked about Woo Hyun, the reason why he wanted things to be over with as soon as possible, the reason why he disliked her being in the same room with Woo Hyun… It was all because he was the jealous one. It was so obvious, but she just never received the message.
Before Sung Yeol could respond, she had wrapped her arms around him. As she buried her head in his chest, she could feel how fast his heart was beating, similar to her own. Perhaps she was also the foolish one for not realizing it, even though he was so close to her the entire time.
“And also tell him, that I like him,” Mimi continued her message.
Sung Yeol flinched in shock as it took him a few moments to process what had actually happened. With a wide grin on his face, she placed his arms around her and returned the hug.
“Did he receive the message?” she asked him.
“Yes, he did,” Sung Yeol replied as he pulled away from her to look at her face. Part of him was still in disbelief that this was really happening. To make the moments last forever, he had to make sure she received his final message, once and for all:
“I like you too.”
