Chapter 20
Missing Pieces“Kenny!” Daehyun called out as he walked the halls. There were some other parents and students milling about, looking at him with curiosity. He kept his head down in embarrassment and rushed away from their wandering eyes as he continued to look for his son. He turned down another hallway, grateful that it was empty. He followed the hall, occasionally looking out of the windows. The bright blue of the EXO Planet caught his eye and he stopped. Daehyun sighed and moved closer to the window to rest his head.
“What am I even thinking? I need to find Kenny.” He rushed down the hallway, continuing his search.
He came across the gyms and could hear the sound of someone hitting a punching bag. He got closer to see Kenny throwing punch after punch against the standing punching bag in the center of the room.
“Kenny...can we talk?” Kenny continued, ignoring his father. “Listen, I didn’t even know about...Taehyung until now. It was a mistake and I really am sorry this had to happen.”
“Are you?” Kenny stopped and glared at his father. “Are you really sorry? You ruined our family!”
“I didn’t ruin the family. I just...made a mistake.” Daehyun continued to try and convince himself that he could fix this but the look in Kenny’s eyes told him that wasn’t possible.
“A mistake…..is when you forget what I want for my birthday. When you get take-out, but mom cooked dinner.” Kenny stepped closer to Daehyun as he spoke. “Not sleeping with another person and having a child. That is never a mistake. You knew exactly what you did, and I feel disgusted even looking at you.”
“Kenny!” Daehyun called out as his son went back to throwing punches. Kenny continued to ignore him. Daehyun felt defeated but he knew that he was right. He shouldn’t have slept with Baekhyun in the first place and now his actions have come back to bite him. He walked out of the gym, dragging his feet as he went.
The day was finally coming to an end. Amidst the disaster that was Parent’s Day, Daehyun decided to stay behind to help the captains better understand the situation that Taehyung would now be in.
“I understand.” Xelena said without looking at him. She had her bags in her hand while waiting at the door to leave. “I know this will be hard on Kenny but this has been difficult for me too, Dae.”
“I’m truly sorry.”
Xelena sighed. “You’re only sorry that you were caught. Do you think you would’ve told me if you hadn’t fathered a child?” Her words echoed through the room and she took his silence as the answer she needed. “I’ll see you at home.”
Xelena stepped out of the room only to run into Youngjae. “May I walk you to your ship?” She nodded and they walked in silence to the hangar bay.
“I’ve thought a lot about this situation with Daehyun and I realize that maybe we should figure out the truth about Kenny as well.” Youngjae spoke silently, making sure that anyone nearby wouldn’t hear. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small envelope. “I want you to take this.”
Xelena took it from him cautiously. “What is this for?”
“Find out if he’s my son or not. It would hurt all of us to never know the truth.”
Xelena let out a sigh. “If we do this, you’ll have to talk with Kenneth. I’ll handle Daehyun. It’s not like he’s any better or in any position to judge my actions.”
Youngjae shook his head. “No, you and I are no better than him. We’ve been living a lie for nineteen years. All things will come to light if we keep it to ourselves too long.”
Xelena nodded, fully understanding. “I’ll call when I send the samples in. Take care of my son, please. He’ll need you more than ever.”
They parted ways, Youngjae watching as she got on the ship back to Mato. Xelena knew he couldn’t fault Taehyung for his birth but she could take responsibility over the new pain she was about to cause her family.
The next day, Daehyun paced in f
