Chapter 16
Missing PiecesHimchan was nervous when he got the message from his daughter that they were going to come see him that evening and he wasn’t prepared to have his thoughts proven true. So when the group of students walked in, he had to compose himself upon seeing Taehyung in person. He looked so much like his friend from the shape of his eyes to the round nose. He was glad to be sitting down because had he been standing, his knees would’ve buckled.
Taking a deep breath he smiled. “So this is the group? What are all your names?”
The students looked at one another and one stepped forward, a Mato. “My name is Jimin Park. This is Wendy and Taehyung, our Exotyte classmates.”
Himchan nodded and folded his hands together. “It’s nice to meet you all. Now, I understand you had some questions for a project?”
“Yes, sir. We were curious about the peace summit you were in charge of twenty years ago. What was it like?” Jimin started.
Himchan leaned back in his chair, pondering how to answer the question. “What was it like? Well...the first month was pure chaos. A fight broke out every single day. Sometimes multiple. It wasn’t until the Lieutenants stopped one major fight that it slowed down.”
“Oh? My dad did that?” Taehyung spoke up and Himchan looked at him nodded.
“Yeah, Lt. Jung and Lt. Byun were really good at keeping the soldiers in line. I’ve known Lt. Jung most of my life, so it was no surprise to see him keep Matokis from hurting one another. But Lt. Byun was new to me and despite barely getting to know him, I saw he had the leadership skills that kept the others from getting into more...violent fights.”
“Wow. So how did the roommate thing work out for the soldiers during that summit?” Wendy asked, genuinely curious. Taehyung raised a brow at her but said nothing.
Himchan chuckled. “It was pretty good actually. We put our Lieutenants together as roommates because of how they took charge of the soldiers the first night. It was slow building, but I saw a strong friendship form from all of our soldiers because of that.” He pointed at Taehyung. “Your father’s attitude is one of the reasons the summit went as smoothly as it did.”
Taehyung smiled, his friends shooting off more questions as he took in the information that Captain Kim gave them. He thought back on the diary and a realization hit him.
“…” he whispered and everyone turned to look at him.
“Something wrong?” Wendy asked, a sly grin on her face.
“Nothing that you need to worry about. Just thinking about all of this is overwhelming.”
Himchan nodded. “That’s fair. I went down memory lane there.”
“Thank you for letting us come talk with you, daddy.” Victoria said, heading towards the door. “If we have more questions, I’ll let you know.”
“Please do.” The students started to file out of the room. Himchan wasn’t sure he would get a chance like this again. “Taehyung, can you stay for a bit. I have something for you.”
He turned and looked at his friends and they nodded. He looked down the hall to see if Wendy was still around before walking back inside but she had sauntered off. Closing the door behind him, he sat back down.
“I’m not going to beat around the bush with you, but I have reason to believe you’re not telling me everything.” Himchan started.
“What do you mean, sir?” He hoped it wasn’t a warning about Victoria. He got enough of those from Kenneth.
“I mean about your heritage.” Himchan’s eyes flashed green before settling back into the purple he donned. “Is it true?”
Taehyung was stunned at how quickly he had figured it out, but it was no surprise seeing as he was the captain of the Mato military. He nodded slowly and revealed his emerald eyes. Himchan stood up, startled by this truth. Taehyung looked at him, scared about what he would do and he sat back down.
“How many people know?”
