Gig Night

And Counting...

Chanyeol and Luhan took the stage and took a few seconds to check their sound to make sure everything worked perfectly. "Alright, check 1,2, check 1,2," Luhan tapped his mic while Chanyeol made sure his guitar was in tune. He strummed a few chords, fully observed in the sounds he made while the audience watched and waited for them to get ready.

Sayuri and Minah waited with the audience as well. "So," Minah spoke first. "Who would've thought they played together, huh?"

"Yeah, what a surprise," Sayuri answered. Good thing, too.

Minah looked at her and noticed how keenly observant she seemed to be towards Chanyeol. Just as I thought. He's definitely the one. "Um, uh, hello everyone," Luhan spoke into the mic. "Glad to see we've got quite the audience tonight," he said as he surveyed the many faces at the cafe. "So, me and my friend Chanyeol, we, uh, we're gonna be singing a couple of songs, a few covers here and there. We hope you're having a wonderful time tonight on Wednesday Gig Night, and, uh, yeah, here we go," he beckoned Chanyeol to start playing.

They started their setlist with a softer tune to set the mood. For somebody who constantly changed styles every week, Luhan's voice sounded angelic and mellow, and it was constantly the same every night they performed. Together with Chanyeol's strumming, both of them caught the audience's attention. But as entranced as she was with their performance, Sayuri subconciously found herself gazing at Chanyeol again. She noticed the way his fingers plucked every string on the guitar. It almost seemed as if he and the guitar were one, and no one else could play that same guitar with the quality that Chanyeol had. Everything about the way he played drew her in.

As Luhan continued singing, Chanyeol took a moment to gaze at the audience. He looked around before he spotted Sayuri and Minah's table. There she is again, he thought to himself. She seemed genuinely interested in the performance, but he couldn't help but observe her for a little bit, too. Chanyeol noticed that she looked at her the same way she did earlier that morning. He definitely needed to have a conversation with her later.

"And even if the moon fell down tonight

There'd be nothing to worry about at all

Because you make the whole world shine

As long as you're here everything will be alright

I musta done something right

To deserve you in my life

I musta done something right

Along the way...."

The audience clapped after Luhan and Chanyeol had finished the first song. "And that was 'If The Moon Fell Down' by Chase Coy, everyone. Good thing it hasn't happened yet, or it'd be just Light Cafe instead," Luhan chuckled, despite the low response from what seemed to them was a badly executed comedy attempt. "So this next song..." Luhan reiterated, and as he talked more to the audience, Chanyeol and Sayuri found themselves looking at each other. Before they knew it, a day had already passed by their Countdowns.

After their set was over, Luhan, Chanyeol, Sayuri, and Minah were hanging out by the counter by the front. While Minah and Luhan were busy talking, Sayuri and Chanyeol sat next to each other. Chanyeol didn't know whether to bring up how she stared at him first or to let her start the conversation. The last thing he needed was another person thinking he was some sort of creep. Luckily for him, Sayuri took the initiative. "You play really well," she spoke in a soft voice.

"Uh, thanks," Chanyeol returned the compliment. So she's a little shy.

"You and Minah are best friends, right?"

"Yeah, ever since we were kids," Sayuri answered. "We seem pretty different from each other, but we know each other like the back of our own hands," she continued. "So how did you and Luhan meet?"

"We've known each other since high school. We met through my best friend and we hit it off right then and there. The moment he found out I played guitar he started the whole idea of a band," Chanyeol replied.

"I see," Sayuri went. "But how come I've never seen you around? Luhan's usually at the university at the same time we are."

"Oh, well, that's kind of a long story," Chanyeol explained.

"We've got all the time in the world," Sayuri said. "Besides, I'm a good listener," she added.

The way she spoke to Chanyeol threw off any first impressions he'd previously had of her. Althought she did seem quiet at first, there was a sense of confidence about her that made Chanyeol decide she was worth talking to.

As the hours flew by and their conversation continued through the night they had learned a good deal about each other. Sayuri found out that Chanyeol had initially been a sound engineering major, but that was before his best friend Junmyeon dug through his old compositions. "He kind of helped me reignite my passion for music, I guess," he continued. "I've always been really into it, but I never considered it as a career choice," he said to Sayuri."Surprisngly, my parents were okay with it, too, even supporting my decision to drop out of school so I could focus on music. I guess I'm just thankful that they let me do this."

Sayuri couldn't help but agree. Meanwhile, Chanyeol also found out about Sayuri in return. She worked at the bookstore down the street with her mother; in fact, it's been in the family since her father established it a long time ago. Sayuri even revealed to him about how her father passed away when she was younger.

"I'm really sorry," Chanyeol consoled. "I imagine you didn't really know him at all."

"My mom always told me stories about him," Sayuri continued. "She said I was just like him in the way I always had a passion for books. I just think reading is my way of connecting to him, I guess. I don't feel anything negative towards him, really. I'm sure he loved me the way he loved my mom."

The way she spoke about her father struck Chanyeol in awe. For not being able to know an important figure in her life, Sayuri had such a positive outlook on her life. He also saw that somehow, she wanted to live it the same way. He had never thought that finding a Soulmate would bring such a positive effect on someone's life, and in return influence others as well. "You know, for someone who stays quiet often, you're very expressive," Chanyeol commented.

"You think so?" Sayuri asked. "You're not so bad either," she returned. "Oh, it's getting late, we should probably leave soon."

"Yeah, I guess," Chanyeol agreed. Suddenly, his cellphone rang. "Ah, crap."

"What's wrong?" Sayuri asked.

Chanyeol checked his text mesaage. Turns out Luhan and Minah had already left in the midst of their conversation. Something about a bad headache, Luhan mentioned. "Looks like it's just us," he told her.

"Oh, then I guess we could just walk together. I mean, we both live close by, right?" Sayuri suggested.

"Yeah, that sounds good," Chanyeol agreed. Both of them then left the Moonlight Cafe with their coats on and their hands in their pockets.

The walk was comfortably silent. Even though they had officially just met, there didn't seem to be any awkward atmosphere at all. While Chanyeol looked ahead towards the street, Sayuri snuggled herself in her scarf to keep warm. Chanyeol could see that she was shivering slightly. "Here," he offered. "Take my coat. I'm not that cold anyway."

Giving in to the warmth, Sayuri willingly wrapped Chanyeol's coat around herself. Subconciously, she found herself blushing at his act of chivalry. She couldn't be sure if it was the heat she felt from underneath her layers or if it was because of how Chanyeol treated her. Unbeknownst to her, Chanyeol noticed the slight blush on her cheeks. She's quite cute, he thought.

They made their way to the bookstore first. "So this Iis your home abode, right?" Chanyeol asked.

"Yeah, it is," Sayuri replied. "It was kind of a bust that Minah and Luhan had already left, though."

"I'm sure they're fine," Chanyeol reassured.

Sayuri nodded in agreement. "I, uh, had a lot of fun watching you guys today, and thanks for walking me home."

"Yeah, no problem. I had fun tonight, too," Chanyeol agreed. "So I guess I'll be off now."

"Good night, Chanyeol," Sayuri smiled at him.

"You too, Sayuri," he returned. As he turned around to leave, however, he couldn't shake the feeling that maybe he wanted to see her again. Up until now he had never talked to anyone about himself like he talked to Sayuri. "Uh, actually," Chanyeol turned back to the bookstore.

Sayuri chuckled. "Yes?" she asked.

"I was just wondering, if, uh," Chanyeol scratched his head and looked down in nervousness. Why am I so nervous right now? Stay cool, Yeol, stay cool. "Actually, I was wondering if maybe we could see each other again sometime?" he asked.

Sayuri let out a smile. "I work at the bookstore during the weekends. Maybe you'll catch me there," she replied with a slight eagerness.

"Oh, uh, great!" Chanyeol replied. "So I guess I'll really see you soon then."

"Yeah. I'm looking forward to it," Sayuri replied.

I'm thinking about changing this story and turning it into a series of oneshots. It'll revolve around the same characters and there'll be different arcs, so...?
