Chapter 3
The Mask Beneath Us
"Ohana means family and family means no one gets left behind or forgotten."
- Stitch, Lilo & Stitch
“You ! Shut the up!” I sat and stared blankly at the scene in front of me. Mr. Kim, my client, just slapped the woman who was still his wife. Mrs. Kim glared at him, placing her hand at the spot she just got slapped. Mrs. Kim’s lawyer, Mr. Jung, tried to calm both parties down. Unfortunately for him, his calming words were lost among the loud voices of the couple
This type of scene was a frequent to me. Me, being a lawyer in charge of marriages, divorces and child custodies, have to see couples quarreling at each other, raising their voice higher and higher in order to be heard and to tell the other partner who was the boss here.
I sighed. I rubbed my forehead with my left hand holding a pen. I shook my head as I wrote down in the notes section of the document.
Both parties are unreasonable and unwilling to make way for the other.
I looked up again at the scene and could only sigh once again. How wrong it was for couples to fight. How wrong it was for the party who was clearly guilty yet they deny oneself action. How wrong it was to put a child’s childhood on the line of being destroyed. How wrong it was to break a perfectly happy and complete family just because of one mistake.
A mistake is what it takes to ruin everything.
In this case, both parties are at fault- Mr. Kim for cheating on his wife and Mrs. Kim for neglecting her child, Suzy.
Mr. Kim denied his actions but took back his words once he saw the photos of him and his secretary cuddling and leaving a hotel. He made an excuse of it being a one-time mistake. How could a one-time mistake cause him and his secretary to act so lovey-dovey? Excuses, excuses.
Mrs. Kim was in the wrong because she neglected their child, Suzy. Suzy was just 7 years old and her parents were already filing for divorce. Mrs. Kim was leaving the job of being a mother to their maid as she was busy partying with her friends.
Both parties think that they were the one who were suffering because their partners were in the wrong. But no, they were not the real ones suffering. Mr. Kim was still able to have fun with his secretary and Mrs. Kim was also still able to have fun with her friends. The real victim was the one no one would ever think of.<
