10: The Bamboo
Bamboo Garden"I'm getting my cast taken off in two weeks," Donghae said during breakfast one morning.
"And?"
"And you still haven't signed it."
"I didn't know you wanted me to sign it."
"Everyone else signed it," he pouted.
I smiled and grabbed a marker from my desk. "I should draw a big hairy to get you back for ruining my hair."
"Fixing your hair. I also bought you y new underwear, but I guess you conveniently forgot about that."
"You're right, the new underwear totally make up for turning me into a clown. Do you want me to sign it or not?"
"Yeah."
I dragged my chair over next to his, propped his elbow up on the counter, and held his hand as if we were about to start arm wrestling. "Hold still."
He nodded with a smile and I removed the cap of the marker with my teeth. After a few minutes Donghae started to squirm. "What's taking so long? You're not really drawing a are you?"
"Yup, a big hairy one. Now hold still, I'm almost done."
"You don't have to write a novel..."
"Hold still!" I put the finishing touches on the cast and let go of his hand so I could recap the marker. "Done."
He twisted his arm around so he could see my masterpiece. "What is it? A bone?"
"No, it's bamboo."
"Why did you draw bamboo?"
"Lots of reasons. Mostly because it's strong as . In China it actually symbolizes strength and longevity, which your bones could use. In India it symbolizes friendship, which is cheesy, but fitting for us I guess. Bamboo is fast growing and resilient and I drew seven stalks which is supposed to harness your chi for good health or some . I dunno, it seemed like a good idea."
"That's really sweet."
"Yeah, plants can be cool."
"You're such a nerd. What is the other thing?"
"What?"
"That. It's not bamboo." He was pointing at the creature I had drawn in the foliage of the bamboo.
"Oh... umm... it's a monkey."
"What does that symbolize?"
"Me." I dragged my chair back to its place and sat back down to my breakfast. "You keep calling me Monkey."
"That is so cute!" Donghae jumped up and gave me a tight back hug before returning to his chair and admiring the drawing ag
