He is not Smiling
30 Days Marrying You
“Don’t get too close to Luhan.”
Hyoyeon and Kris were going on the ride with no word since then. For Hyoyeon, she was in deep thinking what it was all about. What did Kris mean by ordering that? Why he didn’t want her to be close to Luhan? Hyoyeon intertwined her fingers and gazed at the road. As expected, she could never understand what he was thinking about. One second, Kris would do something to get to her nerve, irritating her to death with his every action and then smiling stupidly like it was no big deal. Another second, he went off by himself and became someone different.
She thought she understood him after all this time but then Kris would sometimes show him some expressions like he was telling her she had always been wrong. It was like his every action contained some hidden meaning. It had been like that these past years. But, for the first time today, it felt like Kris was building a high wall around himself. It was like he was on another dimension. The moment she felt like she was touching him, he was becoming more out of her reach. Like a closed book with lock and missing key. She could only see the outside but would never know what was in the inside. It she was to sum it up, Kris was a mysterious guy.
To interpret it simply, those words could mean jealousy. But it could also mean, ‘Luhan is too good for you. So, stay away for him. You think you could measure up to him, you peasant woman?’ Knowing Kris, it would be something he would say to irritate her again. And Kris had no single reason to be jealous. It was not like Kris loved her or something. Or did he?
‘Ah, silly thought!’ Hyoyeon shook her head. As if it was possible.
“Kris,” Hyoyeon broke the silence as Kris accelerated down the quiet street. “Where are we going?”
Kris was still looking at the road. “My apartment,” he answered with much hesitance.
His apartment? So, he was living alone? He wasn’t living with his grandma? Hyoyeon never knew it. More like she never bothered to know it. Besides, there was no occurrence for her to know about it.
“Can I ask one more?” She gazed at him, waiting.
Kris looked at her with disapproval but focused on the road again. “Okay,” he agreed. His lips pressed together into a cautious line.
“Who are you right now?” She asked curiously.
Hyoyeon could see him frowning. “That’s a silly question, Hyo. I am Kris.”
Of course he would think it didn’t make any sense. “Then, let me rephrase my question. Which one is the real you?”
Kris glanced at her, his eyes enigmatic. Or did she just imagine it?
“You make me sound like a person with split personality,” he said, his voice was calm. So calm that it irritated her.
“Because you gave me the impression that you are!”
Kris startled her by laughing. Hyoyeon glared at him. He was laughing but his eyes were fierce, staring ahead.
“Oh yeah? Are you saying I have mental problem?” He asked.
Her jaw dropped. “What? No! And don’t twist my words.” Of course she didn’t mean it like that. He was taking it the wrong way. Like he was evading her question on purpose.
Kris chuckled darkly. “Your words are confusing.”
“It was your attitude that’s confusing.”
“What now? I have attitude problem?” His voice sounded barely interested but his hands were holding hard onto the steering wheel.
Hyoyeon sighed. “Again. You are twisting my words.”
“Just to clarify, I don’t have attitude problem. You have problem with my attitude and that’s not really my problem.”
“My problem…? You know what? This is getting ridiculous!” It was getting nowhere. Not only he refused to answer her question, he also tried to infuriate her.
She looked away from him, breathing hard as she trying to find the right words. Then,
