The Need For Words

Wonshik sighed repeatedly. This was just his luck.

He had noticed the weather getting gradually colder over the last few weeks, but that in the interval of a few hours only an entire avalanche could overcome the city, he hadn’t thought it possible. For some reason, winter had broken into the still ongoing fall without a warning, surprising not only the first year with its massive downpour of snow.

The blonde had went to class this Monday morning with double the amount of clothes he normally wore, just because the temperature had dropped at least by five degrees overnight. That alone had already been troublesome, the bus driver not having heated the car all too well, and his classroom having just the luck of two incapacitated heaters. He had sat through four hours of lectures, mummed up in his big down coat, just wishing he could go back to his warm apartment. But it had gotten even worse.

While the students were inside, most of them in classes that required projectors and the absence of natural light, they hadn’t seen the inches after inches of snow fall onto the streets and their surroundings. It was only after the heavy cloaks were lifted from the windows that they saw the newly changed scenery unfolding outside, and after the first excitement about the first snow of the year had died down, everyone had groaned.

Due to the amount of snow falling so suddenly, which was close to the ten inches, all public transportation had come to a halt, no bus moving even a few blocks. It didn’t look as if they were going to move any time soon either, as thick snowflakes fell from the sky endlessly. This was going to be the worst day yet, Wonshik concluded.

As he didn’t possess a car, he couldn’t make his way home in direction of the outskirts of the city without taking the bus, which resulted in him finally being stranded on campus for God only knew how long. He had sat on a bench near the fountain for a few minutes before the snow and the cold had made him flee, the hair that stuck out of his hood damp from the melting snowflakes.

Defeated, Wonshik trudged over to the nearest building to find shelter. Not really paying attention to his surroundings, he quickly slipped past the front doors and into welcoming warmth, which instantly spread through his skin and to his bones. He couldn’t help but tremble a bit, as he felt the warmth seeping through his skin, the nice sensation over stimulating his senses.

He took a seat on one of the chairs that adorned a round table intended for waiting students and visitors. The blonde let out a contented sigh, feeling like the day was gradually (maybe) getting better by a little bit. Wonshik rubbed his hands together, trying to warm his fingers through the action.

He sat there for a good twenty minutes with his blonde head nestled on his arms, when he heard the sound of students shuffling past him. Classes must have ended, which indicated the time being about four in the afternoon. Wonshik peeked past his arms and outside the window, just to bury his head back into his original position when he saw the snow falling even more passionately than before, letting out a defeated groan.

It was quiet now, all the students having left the building in a hurry. Wonshik could still hear their half excited screams from a distance getting fainter and fainter, until the only sound left was one last pair of footsteps. The first year sighed heavily, not knowing what he should do. Walking was not an option. He could only stay there, hoping that the snow would stop and the busses started moving again. Either way he looked at it, his chances of getting home tonight seemed rather slim.

Suddenly Wonshik’s ears picked up the shuffling of the footsteps coming to a prompt stop, sounding rather close to him. He instinctively lifted his head a few inches to glance up. His body startled into a straight position with an indiscreet little jump, when he proceeded what he was seeing.

Jung Taekwoon was standing in front of him, his feet slightly shuffling in incertitude. He looked like he was torn between curiously looking at Wonshik’s slumped down form in the chair and wanting to go home, his eyes flickering from Wonshik to the door, and back again. The first year cleared his throat a little bit, not really knowing what to say. Lucky for him, the dark haired male’s curiosity seemed to get the better of him, and his voice was almost singing when he spoke.

“What are you doing here?”

Wonshik’s eyes drifted over the third year’s appearance.

Taekwoon was wearing dark, fitting jeans that clung to his long and slender legs in a way that the blonde was sure it had to be illegal. A white turtle neck under a black dress shirt complemented the dark jean color nicely, underlining the dark haired man’s well-trained body as well as his overall chic appearance. Over his arm he had slung a thick black coat, and he stood with his hands in his pockets, slightly hunched over.

Wonshik immediately decided that the clothes fit him perfectly.

Realizing it was his turn to talk as Taekwoon lifted his eyebrows in expectation, he cleared his throat once more, hoping that the slight pink color spreading over his cheeks could be dismissed as a reaction to the wind outside. One of his hands came to the back of his head, slightly embarrassed that he probably had been caught staring.

“Uh, well, it’s snowing, so the public transportation is shut down…” He glanced outside again at the snow piling up, his heart sinking more by the sight. “I don’t think I’ll be able to get home anytime soon…”

At those words, the third year’s eyes followed Wonshik’s lead as he looked outside as well. He eyed the snowflakes falling, and his orbs flickered from the iced rain to the blonde, who was still looking outside with a depressed expression and back again. Taekwoon nibbled on his lower lip as his eyes fell back on the first year, one of his hands coming up the pull the collar of his turtle neck over his lips.

“You, uhm…”

Wonshik’s head turned around as he heard the muffled voice of the elder. He looked at Taekwoon’s seemingly insecure form, hands back in his pockets, looking down, mumbling into his collar. He couldn’t help but think that the slender male looked undeniably cute like this. Peeking up and then quickly looking back down again, Taekwoon directed his next words at the floor in front of his feet.

“You could come with me.”

The blonde opened his eyes in surprise. Did the other just ask him to come over to his apartment? Wonshik blinked a few times, unsure if he had heard right. Did he really just…? The other seemed to notice the younger’s shock, and he quickly added the next words in a soft voice, nodding at the window.

“Until it’s over.”

Wonshik’s eyes met with Taekwoon’s, and he could tell that the other male was embarrassed, but sincere. The younger was worried that he had forced the elder to feel obliged, but apparently this wasn’t the case. Wonshik looked out of the window once again, before turning back to the third year.

“Sure, if it’s okay…” He said, unsure if it was really all right for him to actually accept.

Taekwoon simply nodded quickly, and, swinging his coat over his shoulders and slipping it on, he started walking towards the front door. Wonshik was still a bit taken aback by what just occurred, but he quickly rose from his seat and made his way after the other and followed him out, glancing up at Taekwoon’s back with a smile slipping onto his lips.
