Hi, grandma,
It’s been a while, hasn’t it? I know I haven’t talked to you in the longest time ever—I’m sorry. Things get hectic, you know? I guess life gets to all of us.
I’ve been thinking a lot lately. Reflecting back, and stuff like that. Dad’s in the hospital right now, grandma. Your beloved son, my precious dad. He’s gotten old, they said. But he’ll be better, I just know it. He’ll live to be a hundred years old. I still have a lot of promises to keep, so he can’t leave already.
I don’t think I’ve ever given it a thought. Living and dying, I mean. You went away when I was so little, I didn’t really think deeply of it. What’s it like to die, grandma? I haven’t been alive for too long, so I wouldn’t know. But in my point of view, life is like...like a flower. You bloom. Beautifully, too. Then you wither away. You live for that short moment of being a blossom.
I... I miss you, grandma. Your hugs. Your nags. The humble yet warm, delicious meal you’d set for me before I went to school. The couple of crumpled up bills you’d sneak into my hand without my mom knowing. The way your old, wrinkly, but homey and cozy hand used to sweep through my hair. The way the corner of your eyes creased as you smiled at me.
I’m sorry for so much. I used to scream at you so much. I ignored you, lost my temper with you for no reason, made you wor(blur)out me, made you upse(blur)
When I think about it now, I could do so much better. (blur)y if you were here with me right (blur).
I miss you, grandma. I love you.
Thank you.
Yo(blur) favorite granddaughter,
Lee Jieun.
P.S. You know how I said life is like a being a flower? You’re the prettiest flower I’ve seen, grandma. Look. There are white butterflies, the ones you used to adore so much, sitting on you at this very moment.
