Genre: Romance

Main Characters: Jenny Kim and Park Chanyeol

Summary/Plot: Jenny was a thoughtful and serious princess. She never smiled. The King said if anyone who could make her happy or smile. or even laugh. The guy will marry his daughter.

The Serious Princess

“But father, I don’t want to get married,” Princess Jenny whined. It might’ve been a bit childish on her part, with her being a princess and all, but she absolutely abhorred the idea.

“It’s time that you do. I’m not getting any younger, so we need to find you a prince fit to help you lead the kingdom,” her father said. Jenny just rolled her eyes and sat on her throne. Her father signaled the guards to open the door. Over one hundred guys walked in smiling.

Earlier that week, the king had announced that Princess Jenny was looking for a husband. The only thing they had to do was make her smile. Princess Jenny was a very serious girl. Since she was the only child of the king and the queen, she thought that everything she does has to be about business and be serious. She never smiled or laughed ever since she sat on her throne at the age of eight.

One by one, each guy did their best to make her smile. Even a smirk would do. They went from jokes to even humiliating themselves. Some even tried to tickle her, but her lips didn’t twitch. Jenny was going impatient and annoyed. “Are we done yet?” she asked.

“There’s one more man,” the guard near the door said.

A slim man with short, wavy hair walked in. He was clad in casual wear consisting of jeans and a simple tee that hugged his contours and showed that he was not trying all too hard to impress. A twinkle of merriment danced in his eyes. Princess Jenny wasn’t all too sure how to react.

“Hello, my name is Park Chanyeol. I’m also known as the happy virus of this kingdom,” he greeted with a bow.

The king smiled, hoping that he would be the one, but Princess Jenny was not impressed. In her opinion, his introduction was a bit too ridiculous and pretentious. Princess Jenny couldn’t help but to snort lightly. She immediately covered , knowing it was unladylike and she might be punished for her out of line behavior. Her father didn’t seem to notice though, or it was maybe because he’s letting this one slide due to the occasion.

Her father may not have noticed, but the so called “Happy Virus” did. He grinned widely making Jenny turn away from his gaze.

“Come on now.” She ushered. “We haven’t gotten all day now.”

“Jenny,” her father’s voice was strict serving as a warning.

“Yes father.” Jenny complied, her voice calm, but her demeanor slightly sulky.

Chanyeol waited politely before continuing. He walked towards Princess Jenny and offered his hand to her. She looked at him warily, not sure what to do. Her father was also slightly puzzled.

“I believe it is my turn to try to make you crack a smile.”

Everyone stayed silent, accessing the situation.

The king was the first to break the silence. “Well go on dear.”

Princess Jenny looked at her father incredulous, “but father— ”

“Jenny, just try it. Please, for me. Besides, this whole experience might be good for you.” Her father encouraged.

Jenny sighed in defeat and accepted his hand reluctantly. Once her hand was snug in his, Chanyeol gently lifted her and she slightly stumbled off the throne. Chanyeol turned around to face the king. He bowed respectfully, “I promise I’ll take good care of her.”

And with that, they were off, with Chanyeol eagerly dragging her away and Jenny stumbling aversely after him.

The king watched their retreating silhouettes in happy nostalgia. “They grow up so fast.”

~

“Where do you think you’re taking me?” Princess Jenny called to him.

“To have fun of course,” Chanyeol retorted as if it was the most obvious thing in the world. “I don’t think that’s something people can accomplish being locked in a castle all day, every day.”

“I don’t have fun. Fun is for people who don’t have to rule a kingdom soon.” Jenny snapped. Her patience seems to have run thin due to her many boring suitors before him.

“Then it’s time you learned.” He replied in a matter of fact tone. It amazed her that he didn’t miss a single beat in his replies whatsoever.

~

“Tell me again how this is going to help me have fun?” Jenny questioned. She still had her stuck up façade up.

They were standing in front of a quaint boutique that sold outfits ranging from cute to casual. It was neither all too big, nor busy with only a few wondering souls haunting one rack to the next.

“Well you certainly can’t have fun dressed like that,” he said gesturing up and down her attire.

A bit offended, Jenny fought back. “Is there anything wrong with how I dress?” She was donned in a crème dress with lace wrapped around her torso. It was completed with a silk rose. She found it all a bit suffocating, but it’s what to be expected of the crown princess.

“Oh no, not at all,” He said absentmindedly scanning through the racks of clothing. “I’m digging the stuck up princess look. It works for you. Not many people can pull it off.”

“If all you’re going to do is insult me, I’ll take my leave.” She huffed.

“Don’t take like it’s an insult.” He said pulling out a shirt to examine. “Many girls would love to be in your shoes.”

She snorted out loud, this time not even bothering to apologize. “Sure.”

Chanyeol took this as a positive sign.

“So, tell me what you think of this.” He said pulling out an outfit consisting of a hot pink tube top that showed her bare stomach and a pair of short shorts.

Jenny stared at it, horrified. “How could you even suggest such a thing? Especially something so…so,” she struggled to find the right word,“scandalous.”

Chanyeol burst out in laughter. “Oh god, I expected a reaction of that sort, but not to that extent.” He barely managed to get his words out during his fit of laughter.

“How is this going to help me have fun?”

“Right, you can’t exactly have fun if you’re dressed like a stuck up princess who wouldn’t even know what fun is if it hit her in the face. Twice,” he said nonchalantly.

He expected the punch that graced his arm shortly after.

He laughed, “no, but seriously. You can’t have fun if you’re going to be strict all the time. If we strip you of that dress, and replace it with casual wear, the fun would come more naturally. Besides, the fun’s going to be right out you if people are bowing left in right to the crown princess. This way, no one would recognize you. It also helps tenfold when the owner of the boutique’s your sister.” He added with a mischievous grin.

After ten minutes of clashing personal preferences, they finally came to a verdict consisting of casual skinny jeans and a grey blouse.

“Thanks sis, we’ll come back again!” Chanyeol called over his shoulder as they left.

Jenny followed after him this without apprehension. She did look a bit uncomfortable though. She wasn’t use to casual clothing and Chanyeol knew, so he chose not pry.

“This was nice and all, but can I go home now?” She asked.

“Of course not, the day’s still young isn’t it?”

Besides, Princess Jenny has yet to crack a smile.

~

“Really? Really Chanyeol?” This was the first time that Chanyeol’s name left her lips.

“Hey, that’s the first time I’ve heard you say my name.” Chanyeol smiled. “I mean the tone’s a bit too negative for my taste, but hey. I’ll take what I can get.”

She sighed in annoyance before looking ahead.

“But Jenny,” he whined cutely. “How can you not love ice cream? It’s amazing.”

She stayed silent waiting for the line to shorten. “I’ve never had ice cream before.” She said quietly.

“You what?” Chanyeol said incredulously. “You mean you’ve never had ice cream before?”

She refused to look him in the eye.

“Well this just changes everything.” He muttered to himself. “That’s it.”

Chanyeol grabbed her hand, and as much as she wanted to deny that it was true, she couldn’t. His hand wrapped tightly around hers felt nice. He dragged her to the front of the line, receiving angry yells of parents whose kids’ wants ice cream.

“Hey, hey! What are you doing?” The man in charge of the ice cream cart yelled at them. “Get back in line!”

“But sir, this is a serious emergency!” Chanyeol said.

This got the man’s attention.

Chanyeol continued, “This young lady has never had ice cream before.”

The man let out an exasperated sigh, expecting something more serious. He looked over to examine Jenny and a flicker of recognition flashed through his eyes.

“Aren’t you the crown pr— ”

“No, she just gets that a lot.” Chanyeol interjected absentmindedly.

“You look exactly like her though.” He continued, still looking at Jenny.

“Well it’s a shame she isn’t.” Chanyeol asserted once more, “now about that ice cream situation.”

“No. Wait in line.” The man deadpanned.

“But, but— ”

“Just let it go Chanyeol, the line isn’t that long anyways.” Jenny pulled him back to let the family order.

After a while, it was finally there turn.

Chanyeol lead them to the cart and he pointed at the class. “Do you see this? There are so many different flavors you can choose from and you can even get scoops of different flavor. Isn’t ice cream amazing?”

He ceased his rambling when he realized she was no longer listening. He noticed that she was looking a particular flavor. He glanced over at the flavor then looked back at her hesitantly.

“You want green tea flavored ice cream?” Chanyeol asked, not sure.

“Yeah,” she drawled. “Green tea was my mother’s favorite. We used to drink it together when I was younger.”

“Alright, fine by me.” Chanyeol didn’t know what do, so he did what he does best: lighten the mood. “Some people prefer vanilla and others chocolate. So you might a green tea kind of girl, that’s cool.”

“What do you like then?” She challenged.

“Me? Well I’m more of a traditional kind of guy. Red bean ice cream is more in my comfort zone than the rest.”

Chanyeol ordered for the both of them; one scoop of red bean for him and green tea for Jenny. He paid and thanked the man for the ice cream and paid him extra in tip for causing a disruption earlier.

They walked side by side on the sidewalk, enveloped in a comforting silence as they both their respective ice cream cones.

“You know Chanyeol,” Jenny started slowly. She the ice cream that had smeared on the side of her lips before continuing. “Today… it wasn’t all too bad. I had fun.”

Chanyeol looked down at her, “I’m glad you did.”

“We…” Her words trailed off.

“We should what?” Chanyeol encouraged. He his ice cream in anticipation.

She stopped walking and looked him in the eye.

“We should do this more often,” she smiled.

Seeing her smile for the first time, Chanyeol couldn’t help but to return a grin himself.
