“What do you want?”

Sehun coldly asked, shoving his stuffs into the backpack without even taking a look at the person who had just stood up for him a minute ago.

Not a “thank you for helping me out.”

Not a “what’s your name? We can hang out sometimes.”

Sehun wouldn’t give a damn thing about any of these. He preferred to be left alone and deal with his own business.

“Nothing.” the person with café-colored skin replied with a shrug “They’re jerks. I just couldn’t stand it.”

Dusting his pants, Sehun was about to go back home when a hand grabbed his elbow.

“What?”

He growled, making the other jerk back in surprise, but he could tell it’s merely just surprise, not a glint of scare in those deep sleepy eyes.

“Your bag’s handle is damaged.” the boy pointed casually though his other hand tightened his own bag against the chest “You can’t go home like that.”

Sehun looked down and realized one of the handles was almost cut off. That guy was right. This would definitely bring some questions from his mothers and to be honest, he didn’t want them to worry about him in his first day of school. They had just moved here last week and there were a ton of works they need to rearrange, not to mention that Chaerim mom was already in an emotional mood since she had to give up her job to settle down in a new place.

Pondering on what he should do to cover this incident, his eyes accidently meet the tanned skin boy’s and the confident smile plastering on his face kicked him hard.

“What do you suggest?”

Sehun finally gave up, but his voice didn’t sound any friendlier than before.

“I know a store that can replace it for you. You have money there?”

“How much?”

“About 2000 won.”

Sehun checked his pocket and his shoulder dropped a little as he remembered he had run off his new house today without the wallet. This was exactly why you shouldn’t have stayed up late to watch rerun of Red shoes when your clock had been out of order.

As if being a mind reader, the other boy smiled understandingly and tapped his shoulder.

“Don’t worry. I’ll lend you.”

For the very first time, Sehun looked straight to the person standing few inches from him for the good long minute with incomprehensible expression all over his face. He’d never been treated like this before. He didn’t use to it. After years suffering with people’s despite, his conscience instinctively built up a shield to prevent anyone’s intention to get near him or his family. He didn’t try to hide his prickles. He even showed off them more to warn everyone to stay away from him. Did they not work with this one?

“Why are you staring at me?”

That guy stepped back and narrowed his brows, snapped him out of his thought.

“What do you want?”

Sehun unconsciously asked the same question he had already got the answer not long ago, raising his guard up high again.

“What? I just…what’s wrong with you?”

That was all he had to hear to leave. What’s wrong with you? Sehun didn’t know. People call him a freak, someone who had two moms but no dad, someone who had been abandoned since the day he was born, someone who was brought up by a lesbian couple. So, might be that’s what wrong about him.

“Forget about it.”

Sehun his heels and ran off, leaving the other boy bewildered in his spot.

*********

Adapting to a new environment was clearly not Sehun’s strength although his family had moved in and out more than five times as far as he remembered. But this time, Sora mom promised, would be the last one so either happy or not, he had to find a way to put up with and resolved his issues at school.

It’s only one week and he already got troubled. Sehun was not surprised thought, it would happen sooner or later.

It was Friday, the day Sehun was looking forward to because he would have a whole weekend for himself to tidy up his messy room. He was about to gather his belongings on the desk when he felt the tension leveled up in the air.

What now?

“Hey newbie!”

A disdainful voice came from behind, along with it was a group of five or six big boys gradually circled around him. Sehun slowly looked up and scanned every little detail on their faces before replied, showing no emotion.

“What do you want?”

“Nothing. We just want to say hi.”

A small laugh showed him how sincere they were. He stood up, grabbing his bag and nodded his head.

“Okay. If you’re done, I have to go.”

“YAH! Yo…”

One of them shouted angrily but be stopped by the biggest one who Sehun assumed was the leader.

“Someone seems not happy here huh?” he tapped Sehun’s chin “What if we don’t want to let you go?”

The fact that newcomer would be bullied in school was not a shock to him but the scared glint on other students in the class told him that these guys were not a joke. What they didn’t know was he was not a joke either.

“Get off me jerk!” Sehun snatched that hand out, earning several gasp from the audience. A fist was already raised and girls closed their eyes in horror as a fight was about to start when a hand tugged that fist and yanked its owner backward.

“What the hell……”

“Stop here or I’ll report to Mr. Choi.”

That was the tanned skin boy again.

“Stay out of this Jongin” the leader grabbed Jongin guy’s collar, threatened furiously “You don’t want your beautiful face get some bruises, do ya?”

“Try me.”

They locked their eyes in an icy stare for a few seconds before the leader released his grip and signaled his group to leave, not forget to drop a hateful warning on Sehun

“This is not over.”

Of course it’s not

Sehun silently sighed, stole a glance at the Jongin guy. Now it’s his turn to wonder what was wrong with this boy. Did he have a habit of sticking nose to other’s trouble? What did he want? And more important, did he stalk on Sehun because as much as he concerned, they didn’t share the same class.

When the show was off, everyone slowly made their ways out of the door. Sehun waited until the last one’s back was off his sight to turn aside and faced that boy.

“I will ask you for the last time. What do you want from me?”

The latter didn’t expect that, stepped back in response

“What do you mean? I just want to be friend with you.”

“Why?”

Why?” Jongin pouted, crossed his arms against chest unpleasantly “You come to a new place and people want to make friend with you. Is it strange to you?”

“Yes.”

Sadly it’s true and Sehun didn’t intend to have new friends here. His wall had been built so high, he doubted if someone could be strong enough to break it through, though somewhere deep inside, a small part of him had always been praying miracle could happen.

“Why do you want to be friend with me?”

“Do I have to have a reason?”

“Uh-huh.”

“Er…because you’re…er.. attractive?”

Sehun had to bite his lower lip to suppress a laugh at that ridiculously dumb yet funny answer. It’s sadly true too. He had the look that could kill both guys and girls in a record of time.

“Are you gay?”

“What? NO.”

“Then you must be an idiot.”

With that Sehun ended the weirdest conversation he’d ever had and headed to the door. The hallway a second later was filled of noises of shoes running on the floor mingled with playful yells “Yah, you can’t call your friend an idiot” and “Who says you’re my friend.”

*********

Being friend with Jongin taught Sehun two lessons.

One, a long-lasting relationship must be tested with trust.

And two, good looking was actually a sin.

It’s not like he wasn’t aware of those things before. In fact for all those years sticking with each other, they had been through so many tough times in fighting or getting detention, altogether that he couldn’t remember. Sehun even stayed at Jongin’s for weeks when his parents were away on business trip and the vice versa, tanned skin boy made no effort to become another son of Sehun’s moms.

On the other hand, not even a day his locker wasn’t stuffed a few love letters. High school girls were very straightforward, they would confess if they had enough strong feeling about you. But some of them were different. They’re cunning and Sehun was not that smart to see them through.

It’s just he never thought the combination of them could cause such a big turning point in his life.

It started when Jongin suddenly had a crush on a girl in Sehun’s musical club and asked him for a hand.

“You’ve got to be kidding me.”

Sehun rolled his eyes in disbelief as his buddy gave him a letter and wondered if he could find some way to give it to his club-mate.

“Pleaseeee.” Jongin added a lot of e at the end, surely knew how to persuade someone by giving them headache with his wailing voice “Pretty please. Next time I’ll do it myself.”

“There will be a next time?” Sehun made a face, literally ignored the piece of paper flapping in front of him “And why don’t you just tell her in person? That way you don’t have to bother me.”

Jongin pouted. He knew it was such a cheesy move but he had laid his eyes on that girl since the first semester and all he asked for was a little help from his best friend.

“You know I’m a shy guy.”

Sehun was about to argue about that but seeing the disappointment vaguely hovered over the other’s face, he let out a sigh and snatched the letter and shoved it into his pocket.

It’s a new experience, to confess somebody’s feeling to another one, and the whole time it happened, Sehun really wondered what the hell he was doing. He didn’t even put any of his rare emotion into his words. To his surprise, the girl accepted it quite easily and a little bit too eagerly.

He should be happy for his friend but something seemed to linger at his throat as he told Jongin the result. He didn’t know what had stopped him to reveal his anxiety, the contented grin on Jongin’s lips or the victory dance the tanned skin boy made. Might be a little bit each of them. Might be both. He couldn’t decide.

One month and a half later, he recognized what was going wrong.

The worse was, Jongin didn’t. That boy was too absorbed in having it all, a simple life, an important position in school’s dance team, a good buddy who was more than a brother to him, and best of all, a girlfriend whom he was head over heel.

He was so overjoyed that he didn’t see the way his precious girlfriend suddenly became quiet whenever Sehun was around or caught the insidious glint in her eyes when she took a glance at his friend.

Sehun saw it coming but he didn’t say anything.

He should have, but he chose to shut his mouth and let thing happen in the way it was supposed to be.

That girl began to approach him two months after dating Jongin. She took full advantage of time they hanging out together to show her affection on him without her boyfriend’s notice. As if it’s not clear enough she even suggested Jongin to ask him to send her home when the other boy had to stay back and practiced with him team. As usual, Jongin had no idea, ignored the wrinkles on his forehead when he expressed his disapproval.

The tiny line was crossed when she tiptoed, quickly placed a kiss on Sehun’s cheek before giggling and disappeared behind the wooden door of her house.

It’s purely disgusting, he thought, but Jongin’s ty grin suddenly popped up in his mind and his chest tightened a knot. He fished out his phone.

I should have been more cautious

“Hey, it’s me. I have something to say to you. Drop by my house when you go home okay?”

I should have been more honest.

Sehun had expected a punch in the face and he did get one. A real hard one. It hurt much more than what he had imagined but again that night, everything happened beyond his imagination. Before he could recover his balance, Jongin tugged him into a tight embrace and mumbled a sorry, then slung backpack over his shoulder and ran off.

The next day, he heard Jongin broke up with that girl without mercy.

*********

Jongin welcomed Sehun into his room with enthusiasm all over his face. He had been waiting for the whole night to hear every detail of his best friend’s first blind date. What more interesting was that Suho hyung had told the whole group it would be Zitao from Sport Department and rumor said that guy was a romantic freak.

“So?”

He eagerly asked, hitting Sehun’s arm.

“So what?”

“Dude, don’t play innocent. How was your date?”

“It was fine.”

Sehun shrugged, earning a pout from him. That boy had surely expected a long story, or at least an earful complaint but strangely he got none.

“Just fine?” his brow arched questioningly “Nothing funny happened?”

“Actually, it did.” Sehun crossed his leg, leaning comfortably against the couch “Guess who I ran into?”

“Who?”

“Jimin.” he paused a moment then added “with her boyfriend.”

Jongin’s eyes were dropped in a split of second before he covered it with a chuckle.

“Really? How is she doing?”

“Good I guess.”

Silence invaded the room as memory rushed back to them like a slow motion movie. Sehun was the first one to speak up, wanted to clear out a mess stuck in his mind for a long time.

“Why did you sorry back then?”

“What do you mean?”

“Remember when you hugged me and mumbled sorry after grabbing my collar and hit me? Why did you do that?”

“Oh..that…”

“Uh huh, that.”

He waited and examined the older one’s face. The only reason why he didn’t bring it up any sooner was that he needed to make sure it didn’t hurt his friend’s heart. Sehun was not good at showing his love or care or whatever people called it. He just didn’t want to push the only true friend he had away.

“I was sorry because I had dragged you into my bet.”

“Your bet? With who?”

A sad smile hovered over Jongin’s lips when he flopped down beside him.

“With myself. I wanted to take her back.”

“You knew?”

Sehun jerked back in disbelief. In the whole time, he thought Jongin didn’t have any clue about what was going on and now it turned out, he was the only one who was left behind the story.

“You think I was too dumb to see how she acted around you or the way she secretly stole a glance at you?”

Hell yeah.

“So that meant I was kissed by a girl and got hit in the face just because of your stupid bet?”

“If it helps, you should know that I lost it.”

And the typically ty grin once again showed up on Jongin’s face made Sehun want to choke him to death so bad.
