Promise
Happiness Still ExistsSlowly and steadily, I took in a deep breath and let it out. Questions dashed through my mind. Did I really say that I will tell him my secrets? I just met this guy today. What was I thinking. . .?
"Alright."
"What?"
"I'll tell you my secret as long as you tell me yours precisely after I tell you mine."
All I could do was nod.
Minho shook his head. I met his eyes. They were full of lost thoughts and things he wanted to say but couldn't. A smile slowly appeared on his face. This time, he hadn't done a well job at hiding his pain.
"Taemin, I have asthma." I swear I heard a pin drop. I know my heart did.
"Also," Minho paused and glanced at me, "I was abused when I was a child." Minho, is that true? I'm not alone.
"Now, tell me your secret or secrets."
"My family. . . also abused me." I was trembling. The gory memories appeared before me. I shook my head furiously to try to stop them from coming back.
"Taemin! Stop it!" I froze under those two last words. Stop it . . . Stop it . . . Stop it . . .
Warm water started leaking from my eyes. I can't cry in front of Minho. My only friend. I can't let him think that I'm a big crybaby.
I felt two arms wrap around me. Minho is so warm and his presence is comforting. Minho, I know that we've just met today, but I think I love you, if that's possible.
"Taemin, I will, now and forever, always be there when you need me. You've made me realize that there is hope for me. It's sudden, but thank you. Thank you so very much."
I could only nod, once again.
"Best friends, right?" Best friends? I'm not more than a best friend to him? That wounds me.
I gave him one of my fake smiles. Genuine smiles are recherché when they're from me.
"I will keep my promise to you, Taemin. If I don't, I will allow you to gobble on my food everyday at lunch." His expression was amusing, so I need to act amused.
