Jina lay like a zombie on her sofa, her eyes fixed onto the newspaper article. *No, no. I can't let Jongin be taken away like this. I spent two years trying to get him to notice me. I'm not backing down so easily. Kim Jongin, you're not going to just forget about me like this.* She gripped the paper harshly and crushed it, dumping it on the floor.

A series of incidents flashed through Jina's mind as she remembered her childhood times. 

"Mum! Look what I found! I picked up this packet of rice on the way here! I think someone accidentally left it there! I'm so lucky! Would you like some?" Seven-year-old Jina looked up at her mother with hopeful eyes. Her mother just sighed and shook her head. 

"It's okay, you can have it. The hospital gave me enough food to survive." Her mother spoke softly, lying on the hospital. 

Jina came from a broken family. When she was only five, her mother was diagnosed with Leukemia. Her bastard father, after hearing the news, ran off with another woman with all his assets, leaving his daughter and wife to fend for themselves. 

Most children would have cried and screamed for their father. But Jina didn't. At a young age, she was more matured than any other kid. 

What was the use of crying anyway? Will crying bring her father back? Will her mother be cured of her illness? Will it restore her once happy family? 

If no, then what was the point of crying? 

Instead, Jina stayed calm and beamed at everyone, refusing to show them her weak side. She didn't want them to pity her. She wanted to show the world, especially her father, that she would be able to take care of her sick mother. Jina stayed in the hospital everyday after school to take care of her mother. She catered to her every need. Like what a mother would do to her daughter. Just in this case, it was the other way round. 

Life was difficult. After all, what could a seven-year-old do? Her mother couldn't work because of her illness, and nobody wanted to employ the young and inexperienced Jina. Everyday was like a nightmare for Jina. She struggled to survive the harsh times, the battle against hunger, and the mockery from her classmates. They called her names, "Fatherless brat" and "Unwanted trash". Her mother would usually share the bland hospital food with her, but she was still a growing child, a plain packet of rice could never fill two starving, empty stomachs. The times when Jina had to eat leftover food in the food court were uncountable. But she endured them all. Because if her mother was with her, everything would be alright. 

The hospital staff sympathized with Jina. They admired how she could always stay cheerful despite the harsh circumstances. They admired her will to survive. The hospital tried to pay for her mother's medical bills, so that Jina would still have someone with her. After all, her mother was her only kin left. But, there was just so much they could do. Not long after, her mother passed away. 

And for the first time ever, Jina cried. 

She let all her emotions take over her and cried. She begged her mother to come back, but it was as if there was a strong force pushing her away. Her mother, her only kin, was pulled further and further away from her. The great force Jina into a deep, dark hole.

And she never got out.
