When We Were Young
“How’s your leg?” Siwon asks, shifting his weight to his other foot and looking more uncomfortable than ever. Ryeowook is hit with guilt, guilt for making Siwon feel guilty himself, for going against common sense with the recklessness of a determined boy, for being susceptible to passion more than to levelheadedness, but it’s ridiculous and just insufficient. He keeps his head bowed and starts the bandaged ankle nervously.
“It’s stopped hurting a while ago,” Ryeowook answers, consciously avoiding Siwon’s stare, “it’s only throbbing, for now. Don’t worry about it.”
“Idiot,” Siwon says so sternly it surprises Ryeowook, “I can’t help it, you know, and, well…”
He takes a step back and motions to the door with his hand. “Another idiot wanted to come here, too.”
Ryeowook leans over to peer behind Siwon, and Kyuhyun shuffles in, moving from his spot in the doorway, hesitant and afraid and looking younger, more helpless, than Ryeowook has ever seen.
“I’m sorry,” Kyuhyun bites his lower lip and keeps his eyes trained to the floor. Siwon bumps his shoulder against Kyuhyun’s, mouthing something that looks suspiciously like smile, you , and Kyuhyun tries, only his grin falters and becomes more sheepish than anything, and Ryeowook almost wants to apologize for it, but then it would be more awkward and there would be no end to it, and Ryeowook doesn’t want it to be that way.
Ryeowook shrugs and grins back, saying, “come closer so I can kiss you, stupid,” and holds his hands out; Siwon looks away when Kyuhyun steps into the circle of Ryeowook’s arms, blinking back frustrated tears.
They start going home together again, after that, bantering in between eating gimbap or mandu and stealing kisses in the middle of an empty street or a crowded train station. Kyuhyun likes to protest when Siwon plants kisses against his cheek, but stays a little more docile when Ryeowook tilts his head upwards and tiptoes to reach Kyuhyun’s cheek, and sometimes Kyuhyun would bend lower obligingly, because he can’t really refuse him of anything.
“Ready to go?” Siwon asks, slinging his bag over his shoulder as Ryeowook finishes tying his shoelaces and Kyuhyun wraps an arm around Siwon’s shoulder.
“I was an hour ago,” Kyuhyun gripes, “but you can make it up for me by treating me to a game?”
“I wasn’t talking to you,” Siwon retorts, making a face, and Kyuhyun hides behind Ryeowook when Siwon lifts his hand to swat at him with his bag.
Ryeowook laughs and Kyuhyun grins and Siwon shakes his head at them, and it’s as if everything is exactly what it should be.
