I remembered.
I remembered everything.
Euphoria.
Feeling happy and content enough to finally let go.
The slides of pictures that flick past in those final moments. The ephemeral joys of childhood; fugacious and beautiful cherry blossoms that I could never catch.
His hot sweaty palm in mine, pleading, no begging, me to hold on. For five more minutes. And I tried. For five more minutes, I did try.
But the dirty liquid overwhelmed me. It felt like swimming in caramel, or crawling in golden syrup. Slow, nauseating and tiring. I tried to keep afloat, but it was futile.
It didn't make sense anymore to keep clinging.
I realised that my life would be a Polaroid, a single memory, a picture. In other words, nothing compared to the rest that had came before me.
The lights didn't snap shut. They faded.
And I remembered.
Even in that short time.
We were sempiternal.
