Teachers are invaluable.

As long as a subject exists, it can be taught. Most of which can be learned through books or in class rooms, but there are some things where you need hands-on, hard-earned experience to grasp the concept. The Lieutenant of 6th squad, Abarai Renji found this out the hard way.

Disappointment, rejection and the epitome of hard work were all taught readily by his commanding officer, Kuchiki Byakuya. Renji didn’t make things any easier for himself by fraternizing with not one, but two of his beloved Captain’s relatives. If there was one thing Byakuya taught well, it was suffering.

Rukia was never there anymore: Something Renji learned was partly down to Byakuya’s influence over the Gotei 13. But he didn’t mind as much when his Captain’s plan backfired and she ended up hanging around with that matchstick idiot. The Captain always put on his best disapproving look whenever Ichigo, or the mere mention of his name, was concerned. So, Renji thought that now that the ‘Rukia lineage’ was gone, Byakuya had nothing left to torment the younger shinigami with.

Oh boy, was he wrong.

Not even 24 hours later, Captain Kuchiki placed the spawn of the devil in his squad. Not like Renji would ever call her that to her face...Again. He learned that Akane, as she was called, had a mean left hook and a mouth that could make a veteran sailor cry tears of blood. Not to mention she was just as Schadenfreude as he uncle. Yes, Renji’s beloved (He’s reconsidering if ‘beloved’ is the right word at this point) Captain had a cute little niece. Who was he kidding? He hated the . At that moment in time anyway.

After long, tedious months of practical abuse, he finally found it; The Holy Grail, or so to speak. With the unintentional help from Hisagi Shuuhei and his invitation for a night out drinking, Renji had established a common ground in which he could build from. Sake: Why the Hell didn’t he think of that first? Through the means of daily drinking sessions after work, the two became genuine friends.

Even now, the red haired Lieutenant still has moments where he’s sitting at his desk neglecting his work (old habits die hard) and gives a chuckle at the sight of Byakuya’s expression when he claps eyes on them together – Whether it being organizing a drinking night or falling out of a pub together, completely inebriated.

Renji also revels in the fact that there was at least one thing he could teach Byakuya: His niece is totally into buff redheads with tattoos. He just hopes he won’t ever have the unfortunate experience of hurting Akane. One vaguely annoyed Kuchiki is more than enough. Two of them being pissed off and after his soul would be bad.

Renji doesn’t need to be taught that to know it would be...Very bad.
