My Perfect Partner And Our Not-So-Perfect Love Life

Eunmi was seen emerging from the girl’s locker room holding a textbook, notebook, and pen in hand. Her gym teacher wasn’t going to be here today and she was planning on using the free period as a study session. Saying that she was stressed and overworked was an understatement. Her previous years were quite hectic to begin with and she now has it even tougher. With all of her classes being AP alongside her after school clubs and activities, it’s a wonder Eunmi’s hair hasn’t fallen out yet.

The guys went straight to the basketball court and began to play a game while the girls played badminton. Eunmi sat on the bleachers where the sun was bright as good lighting and opened her books. She was in the middle of writing her annotations when a shadow blocked her sunlight.

“I’m sorry can you please-” Eunmi began kindly but stopped when Byunghun’s forehead met her own. He looked down at her textbook and cocked an eyebrow.

“Eunmi, I don’t think I’ve ever seen you without a book in your hand this entire year so far.” Byunghun chuckled. Eunmi smiled as Byunghun took a seat beside her.

“What’re you doing out here?” Eunmi asked him, looking back down at her notes. He pointed to his class that just entered the field as well and explained that their classes were to have P.E together. Eunmi nodded her head and tapped her pencil against her chin, checking over her thesis statement for the nth time.

She furrowed her eyebrows and Byunghun gently blew on her face. Eunmi blinked a few times and looked at him in confusion. He teasingly poked her in between her brows and said,

“Don’t do that so much or you’ll get wrinkles.” She could only roll her eyes at his absurd statement.

“We all get wrinkles eventually. Even you.” She teased and wriggled her eyebrows. Byunghun’s eyes widened as he pretended to frantically check his face. Eunmi giggled and noticed her entire class gathering.

“Aish, I thought we weren’t going to do anything today.” Eunmi muttered and got up.

“Is it just me or is my lazy attitude rubbing off on you?” Byunghun asked. Eunmi waved her hand and replied in English,

I don’t know what you’re talking about.

She’s been studying.

He thought to himself with a smile. Byunghun got up and followed her to the center. The P.E teachers began to split the class into groups and Byunghun was just about to call Eunmi and drag her onto his team when he noticed her looking back at the bleachers. She was completely distracted and wasn’t paying any attention to the class. She looked like she was in deep thought and tapped her foot impatiently as she desperately wanted to go back and wrap up her work.

Byunghun noticed how she was stressing over school work a lot more than she was last year and knew it was because she piled herself on with too much. It was a bad habit of hers to spread herself a little too thin and this year was at its worst.

As her boyfriend, he was determined to do something.

_____________

At the end of the day, Eunmi sighed in relief as she dropped her pen onto the desk. Her hand was cramping as she finished copying the notes from the board and was relieved to finally go home.

Oh right, today’s Wednesday. Byunghun said he’ll teach me some more English today.

Eunmi remembered and made a mental note to grab her English notebook with her. She packed up everything with a small smile and skipped to her locker.

When she turned the corner, her smile grew wider when she saw Byunghun leaning against her locker looking through his phone. Just as he stuffed the phone into his pocket, Eunmi’s phone vibrated in her own pocket and she had to smile at her boyfriend’s cute behavior.

She walked up and he turned her way, greeting her with a gentle peck on the cheek. She didn’t even need to go to her locker seeing as Byunghun already grabbed her coat out for her. The two began to share a locker when the school had to make some changes for the large number of incoming freshman a year ago. Eunmi could’ve gotten a new locker but Byunghun’s locker was more conveniently located near all of her classes and he barely used it anyways.

“Ready to go?” Byunghun asked as soon as Eunmi wrapped her infinite scarf around. Eunmi nodded and Byunghun chuckled, putting his helmet down on the floor as he reached out to button up one of Eunmi’s coat buttons.

“Pabo you missed one.” He picked up his helmet in one hand and took Eunmi’s hand in the other. The two left the school and went to the student parking lot to Byunghun’s motorcycle. He sat onto the cool seat and Eunmi soon followed after. He ignited the engine and the two sped off.

After a few blocks, Eunmi noticed he took a different route from his house and asked him,

“Byunghun where are we going?” He craned his neck behind him and answered,

“It’s a surprise.” Eunmi was about to protest and remind him that they were supposed to study English today. But he only turned the handle bar and they sped off, the roar of the engine swallowing Eunmi’s first word.

After about half an hour of driving they were on the highway. Traffic was in play since it was the time where everyone got off work and students were dismissed from school. Every now and then Byunghun’s bike stopped because a car in front of him stopped. Eunmi looked around and couldn’t help but think that this road seemed all too familiar.

Was I here before?

After ten more minutes, Eunmi’s eyes widened. Byunghun felt Eunmi’s grip around his waist tighten and he could’ve sworn he heard her squeal behind him. He made a left turn and parked his bike in the first open spot he saw. Eunmi nearly flew off of the seat as she got off and jumped in her spot, waiting for Byunghun to turn off the bike and grab his keys.

Eunmi looked back at the place and a little smile couldn’t help but work itself onto her face. The neon sign still had that one letter that flickered on and off. It looked so run down and nearly deserted, yet the couple knew better. The place made delicious food and even though they haven’t been there in ages, they knew the place hasn’t changed at all. It had a cozy feel and Eunmi could sense the welcoming feel it gave off. (A/N: Does this place sound familiar to any of you readers? ;])

Byunghun couldn’t help but chuckle at that little spark that ignited in her eyes, similar to a child at a candy store. As soon as his keys were out, Eunmi reached for Byunghun’s hand and was about to run off when Byunghun pulled her back. She stumbled back and as she did so, Byunghun made a bridge with their intertwined arms and after she went underneath it, he wound his arm around her shoulder.

“Slow down Eunmi, this place isn’t going anywhere.” Byunghun teased, but he himself had missed this place. The two walked to the entrance and Byunghun opened the door holding it out for Eunmi. The warmth and aroma filled their senses which only made the two want to run in even more. There were a few people that occupied the booths in the back but other than that, it was empty.

“Well look who it is. I thought I’d never see this pretty couple ever again.” A waitress greeted them openly. She had black hair that was sharply cut at shoulder-length. She must’ve worn red lipstick in the morning but it managed to fade and smudge as the day wore on. She wore a black tee, straight legged jeans, and a slightly stained apron. The waitress looked like she was in her late twenties but when she smiled; she looked at least five years younger.

“Hi Minjee, two please.” Byunghun said with a friendly smile. (A/N: How many of you readers know the place I’m talking about from “My Incorrect Partner, You’re My Right One?” ;]) She led them to an empty booth in the middle of the place and set down two menus. Eunmi looked through them and Byunghun chuckled asking,

“Same menu as ever Minjee?” Minjee rolled her eyes and lightly slapped him with her notepad.

“If there’s nothing wrong with something then there’s no need to change it. However, we do have this new thing called ‘Winter Chocolate.‘ Our famous hot chocolate with a dash of peppermint. You two cuties up for it?” Minjee asked. Eunmi nodded and added,

“Anything you guys make I’ll happily eat.” Minjee laughed a hearty laugh and gently patted Eunmi’s back telling Byunghun,

“I like her L.Joe, she’s a keeper.” Byunghun couldn’t help but smile and think,

She definitely is.

Minjee collected their menus and told them she’ll be back in ten minutes. Eunmi propped her elbows on the table and rested her chin on her hands, asking Byunghun,

“Are we celebrating a special occasion or is there something I that don’t know about?” Byunghun leaned in and looked at Eunmi. She seemed at ease and relaxed. She wasn’t stressing about anything and she had a gentle look on her face. She cocked her head to the side and smiled, waiting for his reply and Byunghun smiled saying,

“I just wanted to see that again.” Eunmi raised one eyebrow and asked,

“See what, the place?” Byunghun shook his head and pointed to his lips, motioning them upwards and replied,

“Your carefree smile.” Eunmi was taken aback and didn’t know how to reply. Was it so obvious that school was tugging and pulling at her at every angle? Was it so obvious that she was on the verge of having a mental break down from all of this school work?

She was so engrossed in her thoughts that she didn’t realize Byunghun’s hand held hers until she felt his warmth and gentle squeeze.

“Eunmi, I’m your boyfriend. For god’s sake it’s my job to help you stand upright and be there for you no matter what. Seeing you stressing so much kills me, you know that? I know it’s your senior year and everything but honestly, enjoy it.” Byunghun spoke words of wisdom and Eunmi bit her bottom lip. He continued,

“I miss seeing you laugh at the simplest of things. You’re so caught up in all of your work that I don’t remember ever seeing you laugh until your eyes curved upwards. Or when you laughed so much you cried and I had to hold you up so you wouldn’t fall over.”

Eunmi couldn’t help but melt at her boyfriend’s kind words. These were one of the many reasons she loved him and she couldn’t bear to think what would happen if he was gone. Yet this was senior year and even though she should be enjoying it, she couldn’t help but worry as her conscience told her otherwise.

“But what if I fall? If I fail a class, not get accepted into Dankook University, or anything beyond that.” Byunghun sighed and replied,

“Babe, you’re so much more than what you see yourself. If you fall I’ll be there to catch you.” Every word he spoke was true and there was no lie behind it. Byunghun spoke what he really thought and Eunmi believed it one hundred percent.

“So can you promise me to at least try to ease up a little? I mean, I know you’re a prude and everything-” Byunghun began jokingly and Eunmi reached out in a feeble attempt to smack him. He leaned back as he dodged her hand. Eunmi was about to lunge forward when Minjee came in holding their two mugs saying,

“Woah woah woah now, there’s no fighting when I’m around.” Eunmi glared at Byunghun and mouthed,

“I’ll get you.” Byunghun scrunched up his nose and stuck out his tongue at her. Minjee set the mugs down and left them alone as she went to wait on another table. The two took the warm mugs into both hands and took a sip. As the chocolaty goodness went past their lips, the warmth immediately took effect and the two felt their bodies heating up. The drink was delicious and after every sip, it left a light hint of cool peppermint sitting on the tips of their tongues.

The two both drunk the hot chocolate to the last drop and when they placed their mug down, Eunmi immediately turned to the side and began to laugh. Byunghun blinked his eyes a few times and asked,

“Am I missing something?” Eunmi tried to regain her normal breathing and looked at him. Yet her eyes immediately fell to his upper lip and there rested a thick and creamy moustache. The fact that it was so obvious and big was what made Eunmi laugh even harder.

How does he not feel it? Does he not know it’s there?

Byunghun continued to stare at her in confusion. But after a minute, he couldn’t help but beam at her affectionately. He really missed hearing her laugh and when she covered her face to try to suppress her giggle; he couldn’t help but feel his heart melt at the sight.

I’d do anything to keep that smile on her face.
