Promise Me Three Somethings

My Perfect Partner And Our Not-So-Perfect Love Life

It was Eunmi’s free period and she wasted no time in running towards the library. Once she reached the floor, she pushed open the heavy wooden doors and smiled to herself when she scanned the empty room. Call her a bookworm if you will, but Eunmi’s always liked the library. She liked its silent serenity, the calming smell of parchment and ink, and the shelves filled with an endless array of books to choose from.

Seoul Academy was vastly known for its huge library that consisted of a wide assortment of books of all types of genres, so Eunmi knew she was in the right place. She asked the librarian to point out the foreign language department and was led to the back of the room, her eyes already wandering about the foreign letters written on the bindings. She heard the wooden doors open as a pair of heels clacked down the linoleum floors, signaling that the librarian must’ve left for her own lunch break.

Eunmi’s eyes scanned row after row, trying to find the English textbook. She was going to the states and although she passed AP English last year with flying colors, going to its mother home was a completely different topic. She knew the basic greetings and phrases, but Eunmi’s nerves got to her and she thought that it’d be better to be safe than sorry.

After about a minute of scanning, Eunmi was about to give up when she finally spotted the book at the very top row that was far out of her reach. She stood on the very tips of her toes and attempted to reach for the book, the bottom binding barely touching her fingertips. She tried to add a little hop and jumped, only to be brought back down by gravity empty-handed. She mentally cursed at herself, wondering why all of her brother’s inherited the tall genes. I mean, even the maknae ChangJo long surpassed her own height.

With a cautious peek, Eunmi peered around her and seeing as no one was there, she boldly lifted her foot up to use one of the shelves as a step stool. Just as she was about to put her second foot up onto the shelf, she felt a strong hand wrap itself around her waist followed by an all too familiar voice warning,

“Yah, you’ll hurt yourself if you do that!” Byunghun’s arm gently lifted Eunmi off the shelf and placed her feet back onto the carpeted floor. Byunghun was walking around the empty halls during his lunch break, wondering where Eunmi was after hearing she got a free period. Imagine his surprise when he came across the library to see his girlfriend trying to go ape on the shelves.

Byunghun sighed and asked,

“Why were you climbing on top of the shelves like that?” Eunmi placed both hands on the sides of her hips in a child-like manner and said,

“I couldn’t reach a book and I needed a little boost.” Byunghun could only chuckle at her, he himself noticing her small yet adorable stature. He looked up at the top shelf and pointed to the book he figured she was trying to reach for.

“This one?” Byunghun asked when his finger easily touched the top of the book as he tipped it over. Eunmi nodded and he carefully picked up the book, bringing it down and handing it to Eunmi.

“What do you need an English Tourist textbook for?” Byunghun asked, finally looking at the cover. Eunmi held onto the book tightly with both hands and replied,

“No reason. Just thought I’d brush up on my English, that’s all.” Eunmi was just about to walk ahead when Byunghun’s arm shot up and blocked her path. Eunmi gulped some saliva to moisten her suddenly dry throat, knowing that Byunghun wouldn’t miss a beat and know she was hiding something from him.

Byunghun was standing right beside her and Eunmi didn’t dare look at him. She knew that with that gaze, the jig would’ve been up.

Should I tell him now? I mean, better he finds out sooner or later right?...

Byunghun’s hand gently caressed Eunmi’s cheek as his fingers cupped her chin, turning her face so she could meet eyes with him.

“Eunmi…” Byunghun warned, he himself knowing that Eunmi was well-aware that she had lied to him. Eunmi took in a deep gulp of air and forced the words out all in one breath, hoping that by saying them quickly he wouldn’t catch on.

“Kwanmi invited me to go to the states with her.” Even though the words all came tumbling out in a blur, Byunghun’s ears caught every word. Eunmi shut her eyes, waiting for him to be upset. He furrowed his eyebrows and asked,

“How come?” Eunmi dared to open one eye and saw Byunghun’s face perfectly calm, waiting for her to answer his previous question.

“Y-You’re not mad?” Eunmi asked carefully, examining his face for anything that could give him away. Byunghun tried to rack his brain of any thoughts as to why Eunmi would think he’d be mad, but came up with nothing. He shrugged and asked,

“Why would I be? Kwanmi’s your best friend and you aren’t one to go anywhere, especially out of the states, for no reason.” Eunmi was really surprised by his reaction, even a tad bit touched that Byunghun trusted her so much. She stared at the book in her hands with a small smile thinking,

I have the best boyfriend in the world.

Byunghun was a little sad, knowing he wouldn’t be able to see Eunmi for a few days. But he figured this must’ve all been Kwanmi’s idea, him knowing her impulsive nature already. And his guess what confirmed when Eunmi answered,

“She bought the tickets without me knowing. We’re going to California to arrange a wedding dress fitting for her.” Byunghun nodded in understanding and cocked his head to the side asking,

“Why’d you think I’d be mad at you?” Eunmi blushed at his question, realizing she was caught. Would he think that she didn’t trust him? Or would she just be viewed as a girlfriend who doesn’t know her boyfriend all too well?  She fidgeted in her place for a second before replying,

“I don’t even quite know myself. I just figured you’d be mad with me leaving you all of a sudden-” Eunmi’s words were cut off when Byunghun swiftly pulled her in for a chaste kiss. It was short and sweet and when they pulled apart, his warmth left a small lingering feel to her lips.

“Pabo, it’s not like I’ll never see you again. Yeah I’m pretty bummed out I won’t get to see you for a few days or week, but you’ll come back right?” Byunghun said with a sly wink. Eunmi couldn’t help but be in awe, amazed that Byunghun was still full of so many surprises that seemed to sweep Eunmi off her feet each and every day. She was happy to have him be so understanding. She nodded her head in agreement to his previous question and, without much thought, gently pecked him once more.

Byunghun chuckled and asked,

“What was that for?” Eunmi shrugged and joked,

“So I can’t kiss my boyfriend anymore? Alright fine, no more kisses the-” Just as Eunmi was about to pull away from him, Byunghun rolled his eyes and wrapped his arms around her waist as he pulled her closer to him. The textbook was still in between their stomachs and Byunghun smirked when saying,

“Stupid, I can never reject or get tired of these.” He gently tilted Eunmi’s chin upward as he craned his neck to meet their lips once again. His soft lips pressed against her own as she automatically responded to the kiss, molding their lips together. Their lips moved against one another’s, both of them finding it easy to match the other’s pace. The sweet kiss soon got heated as Byunghun’s tongue daringly swiped across Eunmi’s bottom lip, asking for entrance that she gladly gave him. His tongue easily slipped inside as it almost immediately came in contact with her own. Byunghun pressed Eunmi against the wooden shelves, the boards making her back arch as they closed the distance between themselves even more. The textbook was long forgotten as it easily slid down onto the floor, a gentle thud being heard in the empty library. Eunmi’s hands tangled themselves into Byunghun’s blonde locks as Byunghun brought their bodies closer together when he pushed his frame against her own.

Just as they were about to heat things up even further, they heard a pair of footsteps echoing outside the library. The two broke apart the kiss, a miniscule thread of saliva connecting their parted lips. Byunghun scoffed and asked,

“Is it just me, or does everyone want to us?” Eunmi giggled and the two slowly separated from each other, just in time as the librarian walked past them. Eunmi picked up the book and intertwined her free hand with Byunghun’s. He pressed a gentle kiss to her temple as he slyly whispered,

“To be continued?” Eunmi blushed at his words, knowing that his question referred to their little makeout session a minute ago and that it’s to be continued back at his place. Eunmi gently thwacked him with the hard book, earning a small glare from him. She went up to the front and scanned out the book, giving the librarian her ID.

“You have to promise me something though. Well, you have to promise me three things actually.” Byunghun said as Eunmi placed the book inside her bag. She looked up and nodded her head, signaling for him to go on.

Byunghun held up one finger and said,

“One, you can’t look at any other guy. No matter how deep and blue his eyes are, or how blonde and curly his hair is.” His rosy cheeks gave him away and Eunmi couldn’t help but giggle at her boyfriend’s jealousy. His cheeks seemed to have grown a few shades redder when he heard her laughing and he said,

“Y-Yah I’m serious! I’ve lived in the states and I know how the people look. S-So promise me!” His stutter only added to the adorable behavior he was giving off and Eunmi couldn’t help but giggle. Eunmi nodded and thought to herself,

Pabo, I’ve seen those American movies. None of them compare to you.

Byunghun held up another finger and continued,

“You have to let me teach you English. Because if you go by that lame book, you’re gonna be talking like a robot from the 80’s.” Eunmi pouted at this, looking back into her backpack and wondering how old it really was. With much thought she sighed and nodded in agreement. She grabbed all her things and asked him,

“And what’s the final promise I have to keep?” Byunghun took a step closer and brought both of her hands into his. He stared at them and Eunmi noted his pink ears as he said,

“You have to promise me that we’ll webcam every other day, if not every day.” He continued to stare at their hands, knowing full well how jealous, corny, and cheesy he sounded. But hey, that’s what love does to a person. Byunghun couldn’t believe how he went from being a cold-hearted badass to this wimp who practically chased around Eunmi like a lost puppy. Sometimes he even wondered when he even began to be like this. But it was all blown away when he saw her smile and that was all that mattered to him. If she was happy, he was too.

Eunmi bent down so she could face his lowered head as she smiled at him and said,

“Arasso, I promise.” Byunghun smiled his eye smile that only Eunmi now sees and led them to the wooden doors. Just as he pushed the door open for Eunmi, a sound erupted from her tummy. It sounded like a dying walrus and Eunmi blushed in shame as Byunghun only laughed at his girlfriend’s appetite.

“Yah it’s not funny! Kwanmi ate my lunch so I’ve been walking around with an empty stomach.” Eunmi defended herself, trying to get Byunghun to stop his laughter as he bent over to hold onto his own stomach. He straightened his back and dug through his book bag until he brought out a plastic container. He handed it to Eunmi and said,

“It’s not much but I had some leftovers from last night. Might not be as great as your cooking but better than nothing, right?” Eunmi was staring down at the plastic container in her hands. She looked at Byunghun in regret, wondering what he’ll eat himself. He pushed his lunch towards her some more and said,

“I still have half an hour of lunch, I’ll just go buy something. I don’t want you going about starving, arasso?” He looked down at his watch and clicked his tongue,

“Make that twenty minutes of lunch. I better go before all the good lunches are taken. I’ll wait for you after school by the gate.” Byunghun added. He quickly pecked Eunmi’s cheek and ran off, jumping down a few stairs as a teacher yelled at him to slow down. Eunmi stared down at the box with a smile plastered onto her face, wondering each and every time how she deserved to land such a guy in her life.
