Chapter 5 - A Glance in the Past. Training for the future. (COMPLETED)

Gates of the Zodiac

MIANHE! Sorry for the late post! I added a few thousand words in here, so maybe that'll appease you of my lateness in updating. ENJOY!

 “Bayroot, Extract of Floresca, and…”

Heechul pursed his lips as he tries to remember the ingredients in order to brew a simple cough medicine. His forehead creased in irritation as the final ingredient eluded his mind. He began drumming his finger across the table making this marching rhythm. Slowly as he wracked his mind for the final ingredient, his mind digresses from its task.

It has been over 2 weeks since Grandma Jean took him under her wing to teach him the arcane arts of healing, botany and potion brewing. He has proved himself a good student. He had a good memory essential for memorizing what he needed, meticulous which serves him well while brewing, and steady handed when it comes to applying different balms in healing. In a short amount of time he has familiarized himself with most of the plants that he needed to know and are now able to create most of the basic potions needed.

They only have one week left till the awaited Guild Admission Test; Grandma Jean has been constantly drilling him on the uses of even the most common of herbs. Her words kept repeating on his mind, resounding to even the deepest crevices of his brain like a bell in a cave.

"You must never overlook even the most common of plants. Remember that even the most rarest of plants can be neutralized by something as simple as a tubuscus.(Ginger in their world)"

Upon remembering her words, Heechul couldn't help but laugh at himself as he swipes the strands of hair obstructing his sight.

"Tubuscus!"

Heechul grins triumphantly as he remembers the last key ingredient in making his potion. He looks at the shelves and began browsing among the hundreds of phials that it shelved in order to find those last three ingredients. It was a good thing Grandma Jean marked and alphabetized all of these phials, or else his job would have been exponentially harder than it already is. He quickly finds the other ingredients and began searching for his last item.

"I need floresca...F... F... I'm now in letter C... D... E... F! Okay now... Flea... Finger... Wait what? Finger?! Of what? Ewww okay I do not need that! Hmm... Fl... Aha!"

Heechul finally finds the phial that is labeled floresca extract and goes back to his work station. He uncaps it and wafts the smell of floresca to his nose by using his hands as a small fan. He then remembered how Grandma Jean lectured him for almost an hour when he stuck his nose in the phial in order to smell a particular ingredient. He stirred the cauldron that he was working on, making sure that the flames were nice and hot in order to keep the substance boiling.

He measured the extract of floresca before putting it inside the cauldron. He stirred and placed the lid back on in order for his concoction to simmer. He rubbed his hands, proud of himself as he sat down on a nearby stool, intent on waiting for his creation to be ready for the final step of its brewing. It would take a full hour of boiling for it to be ready. The red head looked outside the window.

It was after lunch when he came up to his work station after helping out at the shop. In order for Heechul and Hangeng to properly train themselves, Grandma Jean scheduled them to only work at the 3 most busiest hours of the day. 8am where most people would eat breakfast, 12pm for lunch, and 7pm for dinner. It was a pretty good arrangement seeing that the hours in between weren't as packed with many customers/. Ren and Baekho have now mastered their duties and are doing well for themselves.

Talking about the blonde duo, Heechul couldn't help but feel suspicious of the two. They were good employees mind you, also agreeable companions to be with, but there is just something about the two that kept nagging on Heechul's intuition. Hangeng already warned Heechul about letting the two keep their own secrets as they keep their own, Heechul however would only nod and put his suspicions at the back of his mind which then made its way slowly back up as he went about his day.

It was now about 4 o’clock in the afternoon; Heechul rearranged his hanbok and made sure he still looked like a woman, before going down in to the shop. He found Ren and Grandma Jean inside the shop cleaning their own respective tables; he picked up his own rag and began cleaning a table near where the two was working.

"Noona, you don't need to do that. I already have this under control; don't you have some more studying to do?"

Ren said as he looked up and saw Heechul bent over trying to reach over to the other side of the table to wipe it.

"There are no customers around Ren, you don't have to call me noona, and besides, the potion is simmering. I was bored waiting for it so I decided to help out."

Heechul smiled at his cute dongseang before watching Grandma Jean. Weird, normally Grandma Jean would be the first one to point those things out. Grandma Jean had this glazed expression on her face that told him that her mind was wondering in her own little world. He then noticed the Grandma Jean has been scrubbing the same spot on the table for quite a while now. Heechul placed down his rag and slowly approached the old woman. He softly called out to her.

"Grandma Jean?"

His calls however fell in to deaf ears. He repeated it to no avail. He then inched closer and took Grandma Jean's hands along making sure to leave out the overused rag she was holding in to his hands. That's the only time when Grandma Jean looked at him finally awakened from her dream like state.

"Oh.. Dear me..." Grandma Jean said as she gave out a shaky laugh.

"My thoughts were amongst the clouds. How is the brewing going for you?" She asks.

Heechul withdrew his hold over Grandma Jean's hands before answering.

"Extremely good, it's currently simmering. I'm just waiting for it to be ready so I can add the grated tubuscus."

"That's good. You really are a natural at this. It's only been two weeks but you have progressed so much."

Grandma Jean patted Heechul's cheeks as she turned and continued cleaning the table. Heechul turned to Ren as they exchanged concerned looks over the old woman. Ren finishes cleaning his table and began helping Grandma Jean. Heechul also finished his table quickly before going to Grandma Jean's table as well. He then cleared his throat as he asked Grandma Jean.

"Are you alright Grandma? Lately you seemed..." Heechul paused as he searched for the right word to say.

"Preoccupied" Ren supplied seeing his hyung's predicament.

Heechul smiled at Ren before returning his gaze to the old woman, waiting for her to answer. Grandma sighed before she answered.

"Yes, yes I'm fine dear. Sorry for worrying you. Alistair's arrival has somewhat unsettled me. His presence made me remember some of the things that I had decided to keep under lock and chain. His story clarified some of the things that I needed to find the answer to regarding my grandchild's death. I can't help but feel guilty blindly hating and cursing him. I do supposed he gave his very best in order to protect Taemin." Grandma Jean inspected the table and took one look around the shop to see no customers dining.

She then sits on the nearest stool and continues.

"I do however still have some past grievances with him that have been left unresolved..." Ren and Heechul shared a look before sitting on both opposite sides of the woman.

"Grievances?" Heechul asked.

"That is the nicest word I have on my vocabulary regarding what he did kids. Believe me, I have more words that I could but would prefer not to use. "Grandma Jean wrung her tiny hands.

"Woah, woah, I'm sensing some hostility here. It seems that you have a lot to get out of your chest Grandma." Heechul soothed her as he rubbed circles on her back.

"That's an understatement... I don't even know where to begin!" Grandma Jean said.

"How about you begin from the very beginning grandma? How did the both of you met?" Ren suggested.

"The first time we met..." Grandma Jean muttered as she twiddled her thumbs as she tried to remember. She then smirked "well the first time we met, he was no warrior at all, and this I could tell you. It seems only like yesterday when he and I first met..."

"Aly! Aly! Aly! Aly!"

Was the chorus of words that could be overheard throughout the play ground. The chant could be overheard coming from a group of young boys grouped in a circle, all facing inside of it.

"Aw... Is wittle Aly gonna cry?"

One of the taller boys said as he crouched down in the level of a young boy hunched down, hugging his knees while biting his lower lip trying to keep it from shaking.

"Isn't that a girls name? Huh Aly?" The boy said as he grabbed the other's chin.

"Well Aly? Aren't you gonna talk? No?"

"I-it's Alistair! Not Aly!" Little Alistair said amongst the crowd.

"But Aly suits you better; you at playing games much like a girl. In fact I know a girl better who played better than you!" The boy said loudly causing the others around him to laugh and continue their jeering.

"LEAVE THAT KID ALONE!" yelled somebody from outside the circle.

Alistair looked around and saw the circle of boys part as a girl holding a frying pan made herself a path through them.

"Who do you think you are little girl? What makes you think you and your little frying pan can make us what-"

A loud sound echoed throughout the playground. It sounded like the impact of steel to something fleshy.

"OWWWWW! You hit me with a frying pan! I'm gonna tell on you!" The boy rubbed at his head before running home crying along the way.

The girl then brandished her "deadly" weapon and swung it to those who remained in the circle.

"Who's next?!" The girl gripped the pan's handle and slowly raised it.

Before she was able to lift the pan however, her skirt was already billowing from the wind those boys left as they ran for their lives with their hands flailing above them. The girl surveyed her work as she single handedly cleared the group of boys. She then heard a rustling behind her to see Alistair getting up.

"T-thanks for that" Alistair said timidly.

"No problem Aly"

"I-its Alistair..." He silently mumbled.

"Eh? What was that?" The girl asked.

"It's Alistair..." He said an increment louder.

"I can't here you ALY, say it louder!"

"I SAID IT'S ALISTAIR! NOT ALY!" He shouted as his cheeks burned red with anger.

The little girl smiled and held his hands.

"I knew that silly." She giggled.

"B-but then why…"

"Next time those boys call you Aly, stick up for yourself just what you did a while ago okay? There won't be bullies if no one allowed themselves to be bullied."

"Okay!" Alistair nodded and gave her a big smile.

"Oh, dear me I forgot to introduce myself! My name is Jean." The little girl said happily as she dragged Alistair through their joined hands no doubt bringing him over for her tea party with Mr. Hephaluphalumps.

"Aly?" Heechul raised his eyebrows.

"Frying pan?" Ren copied his hyung's reaction.

Grandma Jean chuckled at their reactions. She remembered looking out her bedroom window while she was playing in one of her makeshift cooking area when she saw a crowd of boys and heard them jeering on someone. She peered through her window and saw a little boy around her age getting bullied which made her leave her house with frying pan in hand. Upon seeing the boy hugging his knees and trying his best not to cry, she was filled with this overwhelming need to protect the small boy.

"So..." Heechul started.

"What happened next?" Ren continued.

"That's when we started being friends. We did practically everything together. We went to school together, we would meet up during breaks and would eat together. We were the best of friends. During our school years you would always see us joined at the hip. There was no Jean, but there was always Aly and Jean. Oh and he decided to keep the nickname, it really was cute and boys stopped teasing him about it. Slowly he transformed from the small thin boy that I knew. He began playing better in sports which made those boys stop bullying him. He eventually filled out and grew in to this lovely handsome man..." Grandma Jean was lost in her thoughts, no doubt drooling over the transformed Alistair in her memory. After a few seconds of silence Heechul coughed and broke Grandma Jean’s fantasies. (A/N: GJ is so erted. LOL.)

Grandma then shook her head and look quite abashed for being caught fantasizing about the bane of her existence. But in all her honesty, she really had to admit that Alistair looked oh so fine during their teenage years.

"Continue Grandma!" Ren said cheerfully fully engrossed in the story.

"Anneyoung Haseyo!" A group of sailors said as they made their way inside the shop interrupting Grandma Jean's story which earned them a glare from both Heechul and Ren.

"The rest would have to wait, we have customers." The old woman said. Ren stood up and fixed his hanbok before giving out the menus to the customers.

"Oh and Heechul..." Grandma said as she was about to go in to the kitchen. "You might want to check that potion of yours."

The red head looked outside to check the time before running full speed while clutching his hanbok towards the cauldron that he left boiling upstairs.

Meanwhile, while the "girls" were talking, Hangeng and his mentor Alistair were in the wilds, running, sweating and lifting weights along the forest in order to build up Hangeng's constitution and endurance. For the first week of their training, all they ever did was exercise. Running up and down hills, lifting different weights such as rocks and logs and even doing these particular stretching routines. One day Hangeng got impatient of Alistair's training, which was the day he learned to never question the old man. Upon hearing his words Alistair charged at him and flipped him on his back.

"You lack balance and stability" Alistair stated coldly as he urged the other to stand up.

Hangeng glared at him and quickly stood up intending to do the same. He was however unable to lift Alistair even an inch off the ground.

"You lack strength!" Alistair shouted as he kicked one of Hangengs feet forcing him in to a painful split further embarassing him.

"Stand Up!" Alistair shouted.

Hangeng however was unable to seeing that his leg muscles were cramped up from his unexpected split.

"You lack flexibility" Alistair said as he offered a helping hand to his student.

That demonstration had taught Hangeng patience and the real reason behind their trainings. Alistair was conditioning his body first, getting it used to the rigorous tasks that he will be doing with his mentor when they undertake their combat training. Upon the two weeks that they had been training together, he got to know his mentor a lot more. To the others, he might seem to be this strict cold man, but for him he was his patient and sometimes mischievous mentor. Oh the things his mentor put him through was enough to send a normal man to insanity, Hangeng have now learned to take extra caution when he sees that inconspicuous gleam on his mentor’s eyes.

Hangeng wiped the sweat of his brow with his elbow seeing that his hands were preoccupied carrying this huge log he had as he trotted and made his way through the well worn forest path. He spotted the clearing up ahead and pumped his legs harder in order to get to it quickly. He broke through the thicket of trees and threw the log as hard as he could upon reaching a predetermined spot on the clearing. He saw the log soar and gave a loud crash as it hit and barreled through the ground.

clearing.19132402_std.gif

He dried his sweaty palms as he cracked a huge grin. He looked at the other logs that he threw throughout the 2 weeks of his training. He began with the first log that he threw on the first day of their training; it was barely 3 feet from where he was currently standing. He remembered throwing that half-heartedly as he finished the 10km run through the forest carrying that stupid log around. He then sought the one that he just threw, and found it almost 20 feet away from him. A huge improvement from his first throw, Alistair watched his student progress quickly through the weeks. Hangeng no longer broke a sweat running 5 km and he no longer minded the log that he was carrying around through his jogs.

After the first week, he began learning the basics of hand to hand combat and armed combat. Hangeng had some kind of previous training, that much was evident. It was obvious by the way he held his sword and his stance as he prepared to lunge. Alistair however, decided to keep quiet regarding the matter deciding to let Hangeng approach him regarding it. At least he already had something to work with and not to have start from scratch.

Alistair stepped out from the shade and approached his student stealthily. He raced to his student without the other realizing it. Alistair jumped fully intending on giving his student a kick, but to his surprise, Hangeng dodged and countered his kick in which Alistair evaded the counter and stepped back.

"Well done. Now attack me." Alistair praised before giving out his challenge.

Hangeng attacked with a flurry of punches and kicks while Alistair merely dodged them. A few minutes has passed without even a single blow landing on both sparring bodies. Alistair decided it was enough and countered one of Hangeng's kicks. As Hangeng spun intending to do a roundhouse kick, Alistair jumped over Hangeng stepping on his head lightly on the process. As he landed he looked back at his student before sticking his tongue out like a kid and saying

"Hit, you lose." Hangeng could only smile and shake his head at his mentor's antics.

He grabbed a piece of cloth that he left hanging by a tree and wiped himself off.

"Let's go back to town Geng. Tomorrow we'll start on the intermediate aspects off combat. For now let's go to the shop and see how the others are progressing."

They both made their way back to town and arrived through the back door. Upon opening it, they saw Baekho finishing the dishes. They nodded at him before getting something to drink. Baekho asked Geng about his training which the latter cheerfully answered. As the two boys were talking, they saw Alistair peering through the store. Both boys decided to take a peak and found the 3 "ladies" of the shop in a huddle obviously sharing something.

"Look at them gossiping like teenage girls"

Baekho said from the bottom of their vertical human head chain as the three heads poked through the door intent on seeing what the other three were doing.

"Yeah, its so funny if you think that two of them aren't even girls" said Geng from the middle.

Both boys sniggered as the thought. They looked up at Alistair who stared at Grandma Jean. Both boys retracted their head and pulled Alistair in to a stool to sit.

"Spill" Baekho said at the bewildered warrior.

"What happened between the two of you?" Alistair could only look at them before sighing.

"Where do I begin? Well need I say that Jean and I used to be lovers?"

Pacing.

A teenage version of Alistair has been pacing for throughout most of of the morning. He would mumble to himself and would pull back his long sandy brown bangs from his face from time to time. He looks as if he's on the brink of a monumental discovery only for his facial expression to change in to a "someone killed my puppy" look. He has been wearing the floorboards on his room maybe thinking that he would find the solution to his conundrum carved just a few inches from the wood's surface.

Alistair gave this animalistic growl as he messes his hair jumped on top of his bed with a loud 'thud'. He then raised both of his arms in to fists.

"Pros and Cons of asking her to be my girlfriend."

"1st, she's my best friend. We practically have known each other for almost all of our lives... That's uhh... Pro I guess" Alistair raised his right pinky finger which acted as a score board to his mental tirade.

"But if we broke up then all those years of friendship will be gone... Better count that as a Con as well." Alistair raised his left pinky.

"She's beautiful, kind, understanding and intelligent. Traits of a good wife." Alistair had this goofy smile as he raised his right ring finger.

"But, she could also be, manipulative, short tempered, rude and violent." His smile was wiped off and replaced with a frown as he raised the same finger this time on the right side.

"Two for two huh?" Alistair stared at his hands.

After an hour in the bed he was hit by a sudden epiphany. It was then the he realized.

Who was his best friend and confidant?

Jean.

Who was the girl heck, the person who was always there for him when he had it rough?

Jean.

Who was the person who knew him in and out?

Jean.

Who was the person he needed to see every day?

Jean.

Whose face flashes at his mind right before he goes to sleep every night?

Jean's.

Whose hand do I always sought after when he needs someone to guide him?

Jean's.

Whose eyes do I get thoroughly and completely lost in to?

Jean's.

Who does my heart yearns for and belongs to?

Jean.

 It has always been Jean.

There can never be just Aly.

There's only Aly and Jean.

That's how it always is.

That's how it always will be.

Alistair stood up and ran towards the town library knowing that it was always one of Jean's frequent haunts. He rushed through the streets taking all the alleyways and shortcuts intent on lessening the physical space between him and the girl he has fallen in love with. Heart beating wildly, chest threatening to burst, he approached the library, making quick work of its stairs.

Once in, his eyes hungrily sweeped through the silent book readers looking for a certain brunnette who was undoubtedly immersed in reading her books. He finally spots a familiar head poking under piles of books. Jean was hunched over a book cutely biting her lips which Alistair remarked as "trademarkedly Jean". Alistair fixed his hair and took long confident strides towards her. He appeared behind her, cutting off her light source which made the brunette frown in annoyance and look up at him.

With her huge brown eyes, small nose and plump lips looking questionably at him, he nearly smacked his head for thinking about the cons of their possible relationship. With a huge breath Alistair took the book from Jean's grasp and sat beside her keen on not breaking their eye contact. He saw Jean's quizzical look slowly change in to annoyance, she opened no doubt to lecture him regarding books and reading when he decided to interrupt her by planting his lips on hers.

It was heaven. Upon reading books regarding romance and kissing, Alistair would always classify them as extreme exaggerations. Feelings of flying, out of body experience, warmth and all that romantic tripe when kissing made him raise his eyebrows in clear disbelief. Once his lips touched the other however, he felt his soul leaving him.

'So it's not just some romanticist idea huh' he thought to himself.

The feeling of finding a lost puzzle piece to a long unfinished puzzle and completing it was the closest description that he could give regarding the whole experience. Neither moved their lips, both were contended by the mere connection. It's a wonder how such a tiny area of nothing but skin and receptors could warm both bodies flush in an instant. Alistair didn't think that even his whole right arm wouldn't be enough to give justice that this kiss was truly a pro.

Upon an immeasurable amount of time, they finally disengaged their lips. They looked at each other before he felt Jane's hand grabbing his shirt collar. Alistair gulped thinking what could he have done wrong to receive this kind of aggression before Jean roughly pulled him for another kiss, this time more passionate. Jean cracked a smile and said.

"I thought you'll never kiss me"

"What are you boys gossiping about?"

Granma Jean popped up from the door causing the three men to jump half an inch from their seat.

"You startled them Grandma Jean" said the head of Ren on top of Grandma Jean’s.

"Oooh must be something juicy based from their reactions."

Heechul said as his head was on top of Ren's forming another human head chain much like what Alistair and the two boys did a while ago.

"Get busy boys, there are customers" said Grandma Jean sternly as she enterred the kitchen not paying attention to Alistair.

Three days, only three days left till the Admission's Test. Heechul and Hangeng were training and cramming years of practice and study in a month which others would argue to be ineffective and pointless, but to their mentors, it is a doable project. Seeing that their students had pure raw talent and intelligence beyond one's years. They are confident that even with lack of time in their training, their students would still best most of their competition.

Both mentors aren't pulling any stops to their strict training program, in fact they are taking it to the next level. Grandma Jean deduced that Heechul was ready for the rare brews. Potions that would separate the real brewers from the wanabes. It's time for some battle potions.

"Heechul tell me the different kinds of potions."

"Well mainly there are two kinds of potions. One is restorative potions, potions that are used to revitalize the body, give enhance abilities or to gain one altogether."

"Very good, can you give me a few examples?"

"Yes, well there are revitalization potions, anti-allergy, strenght enhancer, speed and my favourite potion, the gilly potion."

"Good, now what is the other kind of potion?"

Heechul breathed in a huge breath of air knowing that the next potion will warrant a very lenghty explanation. Grandma Jean has skirted and avoided making these kinds of potions from the get go. They would however use the theories behind making these in enhancing what he already knows.

"Battle potions is the next kind of potion. Some brewers have dedicated their lives in making and progressing this what other nay call a dark art."

"Why are people calling it dark?"

"Well not only are the potions categorized under it have harmful effects but also the way of procuring the ingredients even the way it is brewed can be somewhat..." Heechul stopped to consider a more a propriate word. "Gory."

"Very Good, now what most people don't know about it is that battle potions are not all destructive. Some potions are only lethal to agmas or a specific kind of monster. Some battle potion's effect are even temporary, like blindness and weakness. Most incompetent brewers who claim themselves as "light brewers" shun the practice of these kinds of potions. Not only are they incompetent but they are also weak and afraid. With proper use, battle potions can be a great asset on the fight against the agma."

"Now we are going to make a potion that I know you have heard of. It can reduce whole towns in to nothing but dust given the right quantity, it causes explosions when it comes in contact with flesh. This potion is called..." Grandma Jean slowed her speech expecting her student to interrupt her by blurting out the answer. Upon stating the last description, her prediction came through.

"Hellfire" Heechul muttered.

"Yes, Hellfire." Grandma Jean spoke confidently. Heechul thought that it would be the last thing he would be taught since it was the potion that ultimately took the life of her grandson.

"Bu-" Heechul was supposed to point that part out but wss quickly cut off by his mentor.

"No buts, I know you might think of it as a bad idea because of what happened to Tae-..." Grandma Jean lost her voice. She shook her head after a few seconds and continued with renewed vigor. "Of what happened to Taemin. Brewing hellfire is already at expert skill of brewing. If you succesfully brew one then you can brew almost anything."

"Now take down these notes, make sure you follow each steps. This will only be a rough guide in to brewing this potion. The reason why this is an expert level potion is that there are no specific instructions to make it. It changes from time to time. Sure, you can get all the ingredients and even the order of how they will be brewed, but this potion have a mind of its own. When it threatens to spill you would need a different ingredient to calm it. When it starts to get thick you need another potion to make it liquefy. If you take down notes on what you exactly did everytime you make a successful potion you would produxe an entirely different brewing pattern. Now do you understand Heechul? Most of the potions on expert class have a mind of their own. It takes quick thinking and a vast knowledge of the different ingredients in order to counter everything that the potion might throw at you."

Heechul gulped at what Grandma Jean told me. Brewing the potion would be like dealing with a kid throwing a tantrum. You would need to be firm of your authority yet still gentle enough on not to ruin the potion. She dictated what she needed for Heechul to get, half of what she dictated was foreign to Heechul's knowledge. Heechul browsed through the shelves in search for the elusive ingredients. He picked them all up and placed them on the table near the cauldron set on the open flame.

Granma Jean cracked hper neck and knuckles making Heechul wince. With one huge breath she grabbed the phials and started to work. She diced, minced, gutted, picked and grounded all the ingredients each time explaining her actions to her student. Once she was done preparing the ingredients she started putting one ingredient after the other. "Here comes the hard part" she said to Heechul without taking her eyes off the bubbling cauldron.

She wiped her brows and watched the potion carefully. Heechul found the staring match between his mentor and the potion quite bizzare, he did however did not voice his impatience. He has been brewing long enough to not questions some weird processes. A movement from the bubbling cauldron caught his attention, he blinked and rubbed his eyes when he saw the potion form this liquid hand that slowly made its way towards the cauldron's edge. He was shaken out of his trance when his mentor quickly made her way towards the table of ingredients, clear in search for a detrimental ingredient. She grabbed an item that was unfamiliar to Heechul then quickly threw it at the cauldron.

"Ha! Take that! Bad potion!" Grandma Jean shouted.

The liquid hand slowly shrunk and disappeared when Grandma Jean stirred the cauldron. It was chaos after that, the potion would try to escape the couldron, either by trying to form hands or by trying to form a bubble that would eventually explode once left alone. Grandma Jean would throw various ingredients inside the cauldron. Heechul meanwhile satback and made use of his critical eye with his sharp intellect. He began seeing a pattern and memorizing the numerous counters that his mentor would do for each type of escape tactic. Sometimes Granmda would get her spatula and manually hit the liquid appendages and reprimanding the potion as she would a child.

"Heechul get the lid!" Grandma Jean shouted at the younger one.

"Put it on the cauldron and push it down! Don't let go!" Grandma Jean shouted at her distressed student.

Heechul did as he was told and pressed his whole weight on top of the lid. A few seconds passed with nothing happening, Heechul remained tensed while waiting for some kind of reaction from the potion. Minutes passed without anything happening. The whole room remained quiet save for the bubbling cauldron.

"Don't let it trick you, that potion is one little devil." Grandma Jean said.

A few more minutes passed and Heechul muscles were cramping. Sweat was pouring all over his body due to his proximity with the open flame. He lifted his right hand just to readjust his grip when a powerful force came from the cauldron. Heechul's lack of readiness costed him, he was pushed and lifted of his feet with his arms still clutching the lid protecting himself from the potion that spilled through.

Grandma Jean ran towards the cauldron and dropped a final ingredient which then turned the white potion in to a flaming red liquid. Grandma Jean watched the potion settle and finally stabilize. She released a sigh, relieved that the potion was already done and ready for bottling.

"Heechul it's done! Come! Come take a-" she suddenly stopped as her eyes went to Heechul. She ran towards her student who was still sprawled on the ground. From the head to his waist he was fine, but as her eyes went to Heechul's legs she saw bloody welts decorating his once flawless milky white legs.

What happened next was all a blur for Heechul. He remembered being lifted off the ground by a strong pair of arms and laid on a soft bed. He would wake from time to time and see his mentor rubbing a cool balm on his legs.

'Must be burn balm…'

the brewer in him thought, as he reveled in the coolness on aching legs before falling in to patches of oblivion. One night he felt warm hands massaging his legs. It felt so good he didn't feel the need to crack open an eye to see who this masseuse is. Unconsciously he let out this quiet moan which made the massaging hand stop to his annoyance. He opened his eyes and saw Hangeng looking god knows where in the room. The low lighting hid the blush Hangeng had on his cheeks which he was thankful for. Heechul cleared his throat which the other responded by pouring him a glass of water on the bed side table. Hangeng helped the injured red head in to a sitting position and placed the glass on the other's lips. Heechul downed the whole glass and asked the other.

"What happened? How long have I been out?"

"The potion exploded, thankfully the hold you got on the lid protected most of your body from the boiling liquid. You've been sleeping for about half a day. It's just after midnight."

Heechul inspected himself and saw his bandaged legs. He tried moving them and found only a minor discomfort in doing so.

"Will it scar?" Heechul asked the other.

"Grandma is doing her best for it not to. The balm that she has been applying on you is really effective."

Hangeng tried to calm his friend. Heechul nodded and looked away from Hangeng. The moonlight poured in from the window behind him giving him this white angelic glow. His face was devoid of any emotions and his posture was calm and relaxed. Hangeng just stared at the other for a while before trying to break the heavy silence between them; he was however beaten to it by the other.

"So how's training with Alistair?"

Hangeng relieved that the other was making conversation quickly answered.

"It's going great, he's a monster in giving out training routines but a really good mentor all in all. He considers everything first before letting me do something and he makes sure that I don't get hurt..."
Hangeng massaged his right knee before adding "too much..."

Outside the room was Grandma Jean who had a basin full of healing balms almost dropped all that she was holding if it wasn't for Alistair’s intervention. Grandma Jean looked at the other and asked.

"What are you doing here on the second floor?"

"You’re welcome and I'm looking for my student."

"Well I'll call him then, you just wait here." Grandma Jean turned up her nose before trying to side step the other. She was however stopped by a strong grip on her elbow.

"You were teaching him how to brew hellfire weren't you?"

"Last time I checked Alistair I was the one in charge of training Heechul and you Hangeng. I see no reason for you to get involved in it." Jean tried to shake the offending grip only for it to tighten.

"I get involved when my student loses training time in order to take care of yours. And also, HELLFIRE? Are you mad? With only a month of training and you expose him to HELLFIRE?"

"He is a good student! He has exceeded my expectations. He has great memory, sharp wit, meticulous hands and the most important brewers instinct. Taemin can handle it! Taem-" Jean dropped her basin along with its contents to cover when the name that she said finally registered to her mind.

She was carried away by the emotion and guilt, which made her lose composure and let run amuck.

"He is not Taemin, he is Heechul. You’re trying to teach him to brew that potion in order to redeem yourself. You think that by giving him the resource to hell fire brewing and letting him use it without harming him, you would be redeemed by proving that it was not your fault that Taemin died of the same potion. It wasn't your fault Jean, he knew the effects of the potion, and he knew the sacrifice that he made. It also took me a long time to stop blaming myself,  but through my years of self-imposed exile I finally came up to that conclusion." Alistair slowly picked up the fallen items which Jean snatched from his grasps.

"Get out." Jean said shaking in extreme anger.

"Jean pleas-"

"GET OUT! You have done your part in training Hangeng now GET OUT!" Jean shouted not caring if she was heard by the whole house.

Alistair's temper flared as he gripped Jeans elbow a bit tighter.

"WHAT AM I NOW? THRASH? NOW THAT I'M NO LONGER NEEDED YOU THROW ME AWAY?!"

Alistair shouted at Jean who didn't even flinch. Heechul stood up with a protesting Hangeng behind him. He quickly opened the door just as Alistair finished shouting. His legs were on fire and his body felt weak, he then felt warmth on his back letting him know that Hangeng was behind him, he leaned on his chest to alleviate the pain and watched the old couple have their glaring match.

Grandma Jean then said with a cold voice,

"Funny, that's what I exactly said to you when you decided to leave me."

With that, Alistair's whole body froze and his hold on Jean's elbow relaxed. The other took this chance to shake his now lax grip off and helped Heechul get back on the bed. Hangeng stared at his mentor and gave the other a comforting hand on the shoulder. His mentor meanwhile looked at him with a devastated face which he then quickly hid behind this cold mask of indifference.

"Get your things; we have last minute training to do."

Alistair said devoid of any emotions. He brushed off the hand and proceeded down stairs.

Grandma Jean helped Heechul get back on the bed and wordlessly applied different balms on his skin. Heechul at first didn’t dare look at his flawless legs, scared how it currently looked like. After sometime however his curiosity got the better of him as he took a small peak at his aching legs. To his extreme happiness and surprise his legs didn’t look scarred for life at all. A few angry and inflamed spots here and there but overall he sees no particular wound that would lead to a permanent nasty scar. He let the calming silence ensue as he contentedly laid back and closed his eyes while Grandma Jean worked on treating his legs.

Heechul was about to drift in to another peaceful sleep when a he heard a knock on his door. He cracked open his eyes and saw his blonde dongsaeng Ren come inside the room holding a tray filled with food. The said blonde dongseang, quickly went in and placed the tray near Heechul’s bed.

“Hyung how are you feeling?” Ren asked.

“I’m doing fine, look at my legs they’re nearly healed.” Heechul said to his worried dongseang. He then looked at his mentor and asked. “Grandma Jean, why didn’t the potion set me on fire and explode? I thought for a second there that I’d be dead, why is that?”

Grandma Jean set down her own tray of medicine and faced Heechul. “Remember that a potion is only completed when the last ingredient is set and absorbed in to the mixture. Thankfully when it exploded it still lacked one of its most crucial ingredients. The ingredient that will set the potion aflame and cause it to explode, can you guess what that ingredient would be?”

Heechul pursed his lips and creased his forehead in though. ‘What could that ingredient be?’ He thought. He then remembered an incident where Grandma Jean placed a specific ingredient in order to test whether the fire-resistant potion was working. That ingredient was,

“Firebat bladder” Heechul answered.

“Correct” Grandma Jean smiled.

Ren interrupted the discussion about brewing.

“Grandma, I don’t want to be nosy, but your shouting match with Alistair was broadcasted halfway through town…”

“Mind clearing what you said to Alistair for us?” Heechul continued.

“Can you stop finishing each other’s sentences? It’s quite annoying, you’re like two sisters.”

“Aya! Don’t change the subject Grandma.” Heechul snapped.

“Aiyo, fine, fine. Well it’s obvious from what I just said that we were once a couple. He even proposed to me, it was one of my happiest moments. Little did I know that it was all going to go downhill from there”

"Meet me in our place later…"

The note read, as Jean found it stuck to the cover of her current book obsession. She was just about to curl up in their living room couch and was about to enjoy the morning rays that sifted through the large window panels when she found the odd note. No doubt only Alistair would do something like this. She smiled as she removed the note from her book and slowly got lost in her world of words.

It was already dark when Jean finally placed her book down. She stretched her legs and then her aching neck before noticing the note on the seat beside her.

“!” Jean shouted as she ran upstairs to fix herself.

She ran as fast she can to her their spot, half way through she decided to remove the shoes she was wearing and decided to run barefoot in order to run faster. She went through the city outskirts and didn’t stop until she saw a familiar hill that she had to climb. She stopped at the base of the hill and decided to fix herself and finally put on the shoes that she was carrying. Finally contented with how she looked, she slowly climbed the hill. “Their” hill, she thought.

Stone_table,_Kinnoull_Hill_-_geograph.or

It was the hill that they always frequent when they were younger. Oh if only that hill could talk, no doubt it would blabber on about their slow roasting romance. It was the hill of their many firsts. To what first experiences they did here, that I would leave as their secret to tell. Jean slowly ascended the hill and saw a flickering of light up ahead, her curiosity drove her aching legs to go faster.

She smiled a sad smile when she finally took the whole picture in. At the top of the hill was a elegantly decorated table that contained fine china, covered dishes and spluttering candles that are about to run out of wax. Alistair was sitting with his back turned to her making it impossible for her to gauge his reactions.

As she slowly approached Alistair, she called out to him.

“Aly?”

No response. She continued walking towards the other and tentatively placed her hand on one of Aly’s shoulders.

“Aly?”

Still no response, she expected this kind of reaction. By the looks of things, he has been waiting for her arrival for a couple of hours now. She sighed as tears slowly build in to her eyes.

“Aly I’m so, so sorry. Please, talk to me.” She hugged the other burying her nose in to the other’s neck as the sobs that she tried to contain finally broke out. After a while she heard a sound coming from the other. She looked up to the boys face finding his eyes closed and lips parted.

“YOU WERE SLEEPING?!” She yelled as she slapped the other’s forehead hard, waking the other in the process making him fall out of his chair.

“OUCH! GODDAMNIT WOMAN! WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU THINKING?!” Shouted the other as he stood up and brushed himself from the dirt that got in to his clothes.

“I come here with your back face towards me, thinking the worse only to find out that you were just asleep?!”

“You make me wait for hours, no doubt reading your stupid books until the sun comes down then you come here and slap me on the forehead?!”

“WELL YOU DESERVE IT!”

“YOU’RE UNBELIEVABLE!” Alistair raised his hands and was on his way down the hill when Jean shouted.

“YAH DON’T YOU DARE WALK OUT ON ME!” Jean removed her shoes and threw her earrings on the table.

just got real. You know things have escalated when a woman removes her shoes and earrings. She ran and tackled Alistair’s retreating figure causing the both of them to roll down the hill. She expected it to hurt but to her great surprise she didn’t feel any rocks grazing her, she only felt a warm body pressed tightly around her. Once the spinning stops, she opened her eyes to see a disheveled Alistair under him. His arm cradled her head while the other was around her waist.

“YOU IDIOT! WHAT THE HELL WHERE YOU THINKING?!” Shouted Alistair as soon as he opened his eyes.

Jean just stared at him and began to laugh. She giggled and snorted which Alistair liked about the other’s laugh. Sometimes he would imitate her laugh over exaggerating her snort in to full blown squeeling, much like how Mochi’s (pig) would snort and squeal.

“What are you laughing at?!” He shouted in which the other only laughed harder at. He then looked at their current situation and the awkward position they were in, no not awkward, it was strangely comfortable to have her slim body on top of her as he had his arms wound around her tiny waist. Things were not going the way he planned. His hair was a mess, his clothes were dirty, the food was cold while the wine was already warm. It was supposed to be one of the most romantic nights of his life only for it to turn out this way. He watched as Jean giggled and shook with laughter, noting how her eyes were crinkled in to crescent moons and how she would try to keep herself from snorting her laugh. He then tucked a strand of hair from her face in to her ear which made the other to finally stop laughing at the ridiculousness of their current situation.

Jean having felt the warm hands grazing her face stopped laughing and locked eyes with the man underneath her. This was it, this was the look that every girl in the world dreamed for since she was little. The look of utter love and adoration. Alistair’s deep blue eyes watched her lovingly as if she’s the only one in the world and no one else mattered. The look that could convey thousand of emotions and compound in to one action, the look that can stop time.

Slowly, Jean felt Alistair’s fingers trace slowly her spine as it made it’s way towards the back of her neck. She was then pulled closer to the other’s face only for it to stop with barely a hair space between the both of their lips. Her eyes fluttered close as she leaned in and sealed their kiss. It was a kiss of love, not of passion or desire. Their lips slowly moved in synch both perfectly contented of only utilizing their lips. Jean pulled back for air only to be pulled back in to the deepest crevices of Alistair’s loving gaze.

“Jean, I practiced so hard and so long for this day. After writing hundred among hundreds of drafts I finally was able to create the perfect words to say, but as this recent events happened I find myself in no need for them. Jean, you never fail to amaze me, just when I have you all figured out you do something so out of the blue and unexpected, that I couldn’t help but shake my head and fall deeper and crazier in love with you. You are the most beautiful girl, no, the most beautiful thing that I have ever seen. Even the stars behind you right now pale in comparison as they only serve as backdrop to frame your face. With you I feel lost, I feel so damn lost. I lose all my bearing and forget all my plans as soon as I see you. If life with you means getting lost in love everyday then I’m telling you right now that I don’t ever want to be found.”

As the man underneath her bared his soul to her, unshed tears slowly made its way down from her eyes to her rosy cheeks. She was floored, never had she thought that the man before him could utter such beautiful and spontaneous words.

“Jean…”

This was it, the girl thought.

“Will you marry me?”

Grandma Jean wiped her eyes and watched Heechul and Ren do the same. She slowly stood up and went out of Heechul’s room. Ren tried to say something but was cut off by Heechul’s look. Ren sighed as they both watched Grandma Jean’s retreating figure close the door to Heechul’s room.

Meanwhile in the forest, were two figures locked in battle. The two men were clashing head on, steel to steel and body for body. Alistair drove Hangeng back with a heavy wing of his sword while the other could only block take the heavy blow with his word. As the heavy blow landed, Hangeng staggered willing his legs to hold. His mentor looked deadly, with his faced composed in to this icy mask. Around midway of their sparring lesson, he watched his master’s mask crack and turn in to this angry grimace. His blows were becoming more and more violent with each swing; Hangeng knew that his mentor was slowly releasing his control. If he made a wrong move, no doubt he would die by his mentor’s hands.

Hangeng dodged, countered and blocked his master’s onslaught of attacks. With each time he successfully avoids a hit or neutralizes it, his mentor’s attacks became quicker and heavier. He was in trouble and he knew it. He had to somehow shake his master from the  battle lust that he was having. He began to concentrate even more as he began looking for weak spots. In true battle his master did not have any of these spots, for training however, Alistair would purposely leave a few spaces on his defenses to test his student. Knowing that his master wasn’t in the right frame of mind he knew that his defenses would be absolute. He waited and waited for an opening until he found one as Alistair raised his word with two hands no doubt for a vertical heavy strike. Hangeng utilized his speed and lashed out his sword arm.

Alistair stopped his movements when he saw Hangeng’s blade pointed straight to his neck with only a few centimeters to spare. Alistair slowly brought down his sword to his side with Hangeng doing the same. He then quickly crouched down and did a simple le sweep catching his student unprepared and falling towards the ground first.

Alistair smirked at his student, “Never let your guard down.” He then flopped down and sat beside his student.

“You see, Jean I were about to be married…”

Hangeng didn’t voice out his bewilderment as he listened to his mentor suddenly share a piece of his past without him asking. He just sat there, faced his mentor and listened.

“Do you really expect us, to let someone like you marry our daughter?” scoffed a woman in her mid forties as she glared down at Alistair who was sitting from across the table.

“What do you have to offer to my daughter? You don’t even have a decent job!” said a man who appeared to be the husband and father of Jean.

“I-I’m currently training for next year’s guild admission. I’m gonna be a part of the guild.” Alistair said.

“HA! The guild?! YOU?! Why would they pick you!?” The woman sneered at him.

“Even if you make the guild, what kind of life will you give her? You will leave her home when you get called for missions. You will leave her all alone in your house, fretting and worrying if her husband will ever make it home.” Jean’s father said. He then made his way slowly to Alistair’s seat and placed a hand on his shoulders.

“Could you really do that to her Alistair? What happens when you have kids? Will you also leave your children to wait for their daddy to come back from a mission that he may never return to?”

“Jean’s parent’s convinced me out of marrying their daughter. After that incident I met up with Jean, I tiried my best to act normally around her but somehow she noticed it. She tried to cheer me up for most of the day before she suggested drinking my problems away. You see, Jean was a monster when it came to alcohol. I swear she could drink a barrel of spirits without even flinching.” Alistair said to Hangeng as he chuckled over Jean’s drinking vitality.

“That night we got real drunk, when morning came, I woke up to find Jean beside me in bed. I quickly realized what happened that night and regretted it instantly. I slowly got back up and put on my clothes careful not to wake her up, she however woke up and asked me where was I going.”

“I told her I was leaving, somehow she got that I was not only leaving the house but was leaving her. She begged me to stay…” Alistair sobbed and continued his tale as his student watched him silently.

“Do you remember the incident a while ago?” Alistair asked his student.

Hangeng nodded.

“After that I left the city in order to train, I trained and trained for the whole year and only came back when the guild admissions test commenced. Thankfully I made it; I was now a part of the guild. Almost 2 years had passed since I last saw Jean with feelings for her still not diminishing. One day I was walking towards town and saw Jean sitting at a café. I was about to approach her when I saw man come towards her and kissed her cheek. The man then handed over a toddler to her which later on I found to be hers. Jean was already married, she already had a child.”

Heechul and Hangeng along with Alistar, Jean, Ren and Baekho were at Castle Edyssil courtyard waiting for the guild gates to open. It was finally time for the Guild Admission Test. The night before, the noodle house set up a farewell and good luck party for their two contenders. The night was filled with merriment and laughter. Slowly the guild gates were opened and some of the participants started to pile inside.

Heechul and Hangeng looked back at their mentors and friends. Each giving them a big hug.

Heechul and Hangeng went to Baekho first.

“Goodluck HYUNGS!” Baekho shouted as he gave both Heechul and Hangeng a huge bear hug which only resulted to Heechul lashing out on him and hitting his head.

Next, they came to Ren.

“I’ll be rooting for you Hyung especially for you Unnie” he said jokingly to Heeechul.

“Aigo my dongseang is cute!” squealed Heechul as he hugged his favourite dongseang.

Hangeng parted from the two “sisters” and went to his mentor. Alistair looked at him and smiled.

“Remember everything that I told you. You can do this kid, you’re a natural.”

“Thank you, Alistair.”

Heechul made his way to the silent Grandma Jean. He wound his arms around her and gaver a warm hug.

“Thank you Grandma Jean, you have been like a mother to me at our stay in your noodle shop. Don’t worry, I’m sure we’ll see you next month, hopefully as guild members already.”

“Aish, just don’t get yourselves killed okay? And don’t you dare fail! Remember who taught you everything you know, make me proud!”

Heechul and Hangeng bid their little family their last farewell and made their way towards the guild hall.

5705.7961.1.jpg

The hall was packed; they surveyed the area and found an assortment of applicants. They made their way towards the tables where they would have to sign their names and sign their Life Wavers. These life wavers are a written iron clad agreement which basically says that if you die during the trials, the guild has no responsibilities over you. Upon signing their names they were asked who the battle specialist was among the two of them. Upon admitting that it was Hangeng, he was given a pin which had number in it.
He was asked to wear it and to never lose it for it was highly needed.

Upon an hour of waiting, the guild doors were closed. A young man  went up the stage and spoke

“My name is Philippe and I am the Guild Master!”

Hearing this, Heechul couldn’t help his eyebrow to raise.

“Geng, wasn’t the acting Guild Master supposed to be Aly’s friend? Aren’t he supposed to be the same age as him? Also, he can’t say that he’s the master, Aly is still alive…” Heechul whispered to hi partner.

“I know, something is not right.” Geng said as the “Guild Master” welcomed the applicants.

“-before we start the test, a feast was prepared for all of you!” Said Philippe, in which the applicants cheered.

Doors were opened and soon servants in uniform came out with dishes upon dishes of mouth watering food. The hall was filled with such tasty aromas which caused most of the applicants to celebrate.

“Weird, Aly never told us of this feast…” Heechul said to the other.

Heechul and Hangeng were soon joined by a guild member.

“What are you guys doing here in the corner? There is a feast going on! Come on! Get yourselves a plate and a glass!” He said a bit too enthusiastically causing warning bells in Heechul’s mind to go off. Heechul being the great actor that he is, returned the enthusiastic attitude and lead Hangeng in to the buffet table.

Heechul grabbed a plate for him and Hangeng and placed small portions of food in it. He then grabbed Hangeng and lead him to the farthest table. Hangeng was about to dig in when he felt Heechul pinch his sides.

“Don’t eat it. Something is not right.” Heechul inspected the food and even smelled it causing Hangeng to raise his eyebrow at his weird partner.

“You are being too paranoid, enjoy a little.” Hangeng said as he tried to yet again eat only to be pinched again, this time harder.

Hangeng glared at Heechul which the other met with a blank expression.

“Look” Heechul said as he took a small portion of a dish an placed it on his goblet that was filled with water. The meat sunk towards the bottom of the goblet, after a while Hangeng’s eyes widened when blue liquid seeped out from the dish and floated towards the top of the goblet.Heechul smirked when his suspicions were found to be correct.

“What is it?” Hangeng asked as he looked around to find people digging in without a care in the world. Unaware of the substance that they are currently consuming.

“Some kind of paralyzing potion, it’s lighter than water that’s why it floats. It’s virtually tasteless and odorless making it almost unnoticeable when added to food.” Heechul whispered to his partner as he began surveying the crowd.

“Wow, this must be part of the test. Good job Heechul, at this rate we’ll be the only one to pass.”

“No, look at that table and the table over there.” Heechul pointed discreetly at two tables both far from where they currently are.

“Look at those two”

Heechul pointed at two people, most probably partners in the first table that he pointed to.

“They’re not really eating; they’re just moving their food around. Same goes for the people over there…”

Heechul pointed towards the second table. Meanwhile Hangeng noticed a Guild Member on the sides looking at them.

“Heechul that guy is looking at us, he must be wondering why we aren’t eating.”

“Take small a small amount of food, pretend to chew it and discreetly spit it at your napkin. Make sure you don’t ingest any of it.” Heechul whispered as he slowly opened his mouth and popped in a fork filled with food. He moved his mouth around pretending to chew it and wiped his mouth with his napkin while discreetly depositing it in his napkin. Hangeng did the same and stole a quick glance at the guild member who was watching them earlier. The guy seemed satisfied enough and began wondering through the crowd.

Heechul and Hangeng spent the rest of the feast scanning the crowd for participants who got wind of the deception and would occasionally fake eating.  He spotted a couple who he noticed was not eating but were enthusiastically encouraging their table mates to eat and consume more food.

It was an hour later, when they heard the first scream. Their eyes locked on a frantic woman who was trying to wake up her partner. It was pandemonium after that, brewers who have consumed the food slowly pieced the puzzle as they urged themselves an their partners to vomit. It was to no avail however, since the paralyzing agent has been in their bodies for almost more than an hour now and was now probably being digested. Slowly and one by one people started dropping like stones. The woman who screamed was now beside her parent lying motionlessly on the ground. After another hour, there were only a few partners who were left mobile.

Heechul saw the partners who were urging others to eat laugh at their unconscious tablemates. Heechul scoffed at their two-faced attitudes before turning to count the others. Heechul counted 20 partners remaining. The doors opened yet again in order to let a few guild members come in the hall with their Guild Master Philippe leading them.
