2: Good Friends

With a smile, Haeri left her Science Lab, anxious for lunch. Jinae had texted her to meet by the band room and even though she didn’t know where that was, she intended to try to find it on her own. People shoved by her, eager to get to lunch and a few times she almost tripped in the rush. “Oppa~” a deep voice called behind her and she let out a groan, instantly knowing who the voice belonged to. It couldn’t be anyone else. Pyo’s arm set around her shoulders and Yukwon pulled up beside her as they continued walking and Haeri looked up in frustration. “What are you doing right now?” “How much does it cost to rent you for lunch?” Yukwon asked, smiling brightly. Haeri rolled her eyes and shoved Pyo off. “Too much for either of you, besides I have plans.” “It’s your first day, who could you have plans with?” Pyo asked curiously, tilting his head. “Yah! It’s not Himchan is it? I warned him already!” he called, turning to her. She pushed him and shook her head. “No, and why did you do that earlier? He was pretty cute too.” she trailed off, putting a finger to her lips in thought. “Himchan? Yah, watch out for him. He’s a player.” Yukwon warned, expression serious as they passed through a group of basketballers who seemed excited about an upcoming game. “Exactly why I told him to stay away. You should be thanking me.” Pyo smiled triumphantly. Haeri rolled her eyes, “Thank you my . You stole my note and threw away what could’ve been my first friendship.” “You’re so mean to us, Oppa. Shouldn’t you be nicer to the ones you love?” Yukwon whined with a pout as they turned a corner into the main hall. “You’d think so but my love is slipping. You’re really annoying in real life, you know that?” Pyo smiled and wrapped and arm around her waist, “That’s because we haven’t gotten you alone yet.” “Y-Yah!” Haeri called, startled and pushing him away. The boys laughed and waved to their friends as they approached the end of the hall. Zico glared at her as the three pulled up and she blushed, looking at the floor. “Who’s the pretty lady?” Kyung asked with a grin, moving to extend his hand. “This is Kwon Haeri.” Yukwon said, pushing her forward. “The one with the blog.” Pyo added and Haeri groaned, hanging her head. “I don’t have time for this, I’ll be late. Where’s the band room?” she asked, turning to Yukwon. “Are you in band?” Jaehyo asked curiously, tilting his head. “It’s just down a ways, take two lefts, third door.” Yukwon replied, pointing down the hall. Haeri nodded and gave a bow. “I’m sorry, I’ll leave first.” The boys waved as she hurried off, watching her go. “So she’s really the one who’s so in love with us? She didn’t seem eager to greet us.” Taeil mused, looking to the two who’d introduced her. “She even complained about having lunch with us.” Pyo nodded in thought. Jaehyo shrugged, “You two aren’t the brightest. It probably wasn’t even her and she’s annoyed with you both.” “It’s her.” Zico confirmed with a scowl, turning and heading towards the lunch room.  “We’ll just have to watch her.” he added as his friends followed him, babbling about Haeri and the morning classes.

Haeri finally found the band room and quickly bowed to the two sitting against the wall. “I’m so sorry I’m late!” The couple looked up and shook their heads, standing. “What took you so long? Wasn’t it obvious where this was from the signs?” Jinae asked as they began walking to the lunch room. Haeri shook her head, “I couldn’t pay attention. They were annoying me too much that I didn’t even notice there were signs.” “They?” Xander asked, looking over at her. Haeri frowned and nodded, holding her books tight to her chest. “Yukwon-ssi and Pyo-ssi. They won’t leave me alone!” Jinae gasped and shoved her friends shoulder, earning a shocked look from Haeri. “Yah! They’re two of the most popular boys in school, don’t you know? Block B are legends, any girl would die to have them even wave in their general direction!” Haeri scoffed. “Lies. They’re so annoying!” “Did they say anything about me, will they let me join soon?!” Xander asked anxiously, eyes wide. The girls laughed and grabbed their trays as they entered the lunch room. “I don’t want to talk about it anymore. How were your morning classes?” she asked. Jinae explained about the boring math lesson and how Xander wouldn’t stop whispering to her the whole time. “I didn’t even take one note because of you!” she complained, shoving her boyfriend. “You know you’d rather have me than your notes anyways.” he smirked, leaning down to kiss her cheek. She blushed and rolled her eyes, looking over as someone waved to them. “OPPA!” Pyo called loudly, standing up across the lunchroom. Most eyes turned to the three as Haeri froze in embarrassment. “OPPA, COME SIT!” Haeri blushed madly and shook her head, ducking down and sitting at the nearest empty table with her friends. “What are you doing?! Let’s go sit!” Jinae pleaded with her, pouting. People began to whisper and point at them and Xander looked around, pleased with all the attention. “Haeri-ssi, please~” Jinae persisted, shaking her friends arm. “No! Absolutely not! I will not sit with those annoying-“ “You should watch what you say. We know your secrets, Kwonnie.” a voice interrupted firmly beside her as Zico sat down. Jinae blushed and watched as the rest of Block B sat around them, quickly filling the empty table. “You’re mean Oppa.” Pyo whined, sticking out his tongue as Haeri glared at him. “Since you wouldn’t join us, we thought we’d join you.” Jaehyo smiled, clasping his hands together on the table. “There was a reason I didn’t join you.” she complained, using her fork to push around the peas on the plastic tray as Kyung reached over and stole her napkin. “Yah! What are you doing?” “Writing my phone number down.” he shrugged innocently, scribbling on the thin sheet before handing it back with a smirk. Haeri smiled politely and took it before crumbling it up and tossing it in the nearby trash bin. His face showed horror at her action and she let out a sound of pain as Jinae kicked her under the table for the harshness. “So how do you guys know our Haeri?” she asked sweetly, looking around at the tough boys. They each looked at Haeri who was intently squishing the peas with the fork, annoyance seeping out of her. “We’re just good friends.” Yukwon smiled with a shrug. “Friends my .” she mumbled under her breath, eyes widening as Zico’s arm slid around her waist, pulling her closer as he leaned down to whisper in her ear “Keep it up, you’ll regret it if you continue this way with us.” Haeri blushed madly and nodded her understanding, gulping as he pulled away facing his group again. She was afraid of him. He’d always been sweet and loving in the stories she’d read but this wasn’t a story. He wasn’t sweet to her and she didn’t want to even try to get to know him. He gave off a mean vibe, a kind of warning to stay away and she wanted to closely listen to that vibe. This was a dangerous man and she knew it. She shouldn’t feel as threatened as she did, no matter how scary this boy could be, her Oppa could be scarier. She leaned her chin on her open palm and thought about it. Block B seemed quite popular, maybe she should ask her big brother about them. In the stories they were always a gang with mean enemies but she’d quickly learned that the stories weren’t right. These people writing obviously had never closely observed the boys but that didn’t mean they weren’t really a gang. She looked around, watching them eat and joke with each other, scolding Alexander as he tried to get into the group. These boys weren’t gangsters, were they? If she asked her brother, and they were, would she have to switch schools? Would her brother do them harm to get the point across that she was not to be messed with? She blinked as Pyo was suddenly close to her face and he let out a giggle as he moved away. “What were you thinking about so hard?” he asked, crossing his arms on the table. She wondered if she should mention her Oppa’s name, see what kind of reaction they had. “Ah, Haeri-ah, should we walk home together today?” Jinae asked, turning to her. Haeri shook her head and smiled, “My Oppa’s picking me up. It’s been so long since I’ve seen him and he’s upset that I didn’t tell him I moved to Seoul.” Jinae nodded and set her fruit cup down, thanking Xander as he got up to dump their trays for them. “Who’s your Oppa?” Jaehyo asked, straying away from his own conversation to join theirs. Should she tell them? Should she see what happened? “The one who called you earlier? He sounded mean.” Yukwon added with thought, recalling the conversation  he overheard that morning. Haeri shrugged and handed her tray to Xander when he’d returned and he let out a groan that he had to walk all the way back to the trash bin again. “So, who is he?” Jaehyo persisted, more interested now that she didn’t seem quick to answer. Jinae didn’t even know who her big brother was, should she reply as if it wasn’t a big deal? What if they were a gang, what if they used her as bait to get to her brother? What if they already knew and were being sweet to get on her good side? They had gone through her internet sites but she assumed she’d be safe in that department. She’d never communicated with her brother online and she’d never talked about him either. They couldn’t possibly know. The bell rang loudly and the boys groaned before getting up, uneager for their later classes. Haeri got up and waved to Jinae as she headed off with Xander and Pyo set his arms around her shoulders again. “Where are we going next, Kwonnie?” Haeri pushed him away and walked off on her own, a bit upset that she didn’t get to have fun with them, missing her chance to talk about her Oppa. The more she thought about, the more them using her seemed plausible. If she was to be serious, why were they hanging around her anyways? They didn’t know her, she wasn’t especially pretty and she certainly wasn’t a very interesting person so why did they seem to hang around? They were kingka’s, and kings didn’t mingle with the peasants. She let out a smile, ‘Right, this is just like all the stories. The new girl gets noticed and her dream Oppa falls for her.’ She was living one of those stories but it was different now that it was real life. Her shining Oppa’s she adored so much were just sarcastic wannabe- “Yah!” a voice yelled as Haeri bumped into someone. She looked up at Zico and blushed, quickly bowing. “M-Miane…I wasn’t-“ “Watch it next time.” he growled, shoving past her. She looked back at him with a scowl, sticking out her tongue. Why was he always so mean to her? ‘Right, this too is just like the stories.’ He’s supposed to fall in love with her, right? ‘In my childish dreams.’ Haeri thought, rolling her eyes again and huffing before continuing to her next class.

As the last bell rang and the school slowly emptied out, Haeri set her books in her locker. She was thankful the first day was over and more excited to see her Oppa again after a few years. Nothing would compare to the joy she’d feel when she finally got to hug him again. She shut her locker and groaned as she turned to face her favorite boys walking towards her. “Yah, Kwon Haeri!” Kyung called out, shaking a fist. What was this now? “You think you’d leave without us?” She scoffed and turned away, “Why would I leave with you guys? Walk on your own.” “But baby~” Pyo whined, slinging his arm once again over her shoulders. “I’m not your baby and stop doing that!” she complained, shoving him away. “Don’t you want us to walk you home incase something happens?” Yukwon asked slyly, moving to walk beside her. “Yeah, incase we have to come to your rescue like in one of those fictions~” Kyung laughed. Haeri blushed and shook her head. “Can’t we drop that? I’m not the only one who reads those things you know.” “But you’re fun to tease.” Jaehyo chimed in, pinching her cheek. She moved to bite his hand but he quickly pulled away with a laugh. The group filed down the school steps together and collectively looked over as a black motorcycle pulled up beside them. The rider took off his helmet and glared at the boys standing closely around Haeri. Zico took her hand and pushed her behind him, tensing as the atmosphere darkened. People looked over at the scene as they left the school grounds, unsure if there’d be a fight or not but unwilling to stick around and see. “Yah, what do you think you’re doing?” Haeri complained with a pout, shoving his back gently. “What are you here for?” Zico snapped towards the rider, ignoring Haeri’s protests as she tried to wriggle out of his grip. “You’re going to regret it if you don’t let her go.” The rider warned calmly. “She’s with us.” B-Bomb said firmly and Haeri looked over, hearing his voice for the first time that day. “Haeri-ah, is this true?” the rider called, eyes not leaving the leaders. “Ani Oppa!” she whined, moving to peer around Zico to see her big brother. “Zico-ssi let me go~” he dropped her hand and moved aside as the boys looked at her. “Op-pa?” Kyung asked confused. Haeri smiled triumphantly and ran to hug her brother tightly. “I missed you Oppa!” “I missed you too baby.” He handed her a helmet and she stuck out her tongue at the group of boys before getting on the bike. “If I see you guys hanging around her again, I won’t let you off.” Jiyong warned, glaring at the boys before speeding off. “, that’s her brother?” Kyung asked, turning to the group of boys. “We shouldn’t have messed with her. It’s not like she said anything about him online though, maybe he’ll let us off because we didn’t know.” Yukwon replied, rubbing the back of his head. “What a girl. She’s so in love with us online but can’t bear to be around us in reality, she’s not afraid of us or careful around us like everyone else is and her big brother owns one of the best gangs in Seoul. We sure know how to pick ‘em, right guys?”  Taeil laughed, crossing his arms. “This’ll be interesting.” Zico smirked, shoving his hands in his pockets before starting the walk home.

Haeri told her big brother where she lived and they drove there in silence. She began to think Block B really was a gang, why had her brother gotten so mad about them being near her? Then again, they didn’t seem to glad that he was looking for her either. ‘Why is this just like every story she’d read about them?’ Block B couldn’t be a gang, despite teasing her they seemed to be sweet boys and even as the situation darkened back there, the only one who really seemed dangerous was Zico. Maybe it was just him who was a threat to Jiyong. Was Zico a gangster? His aura certainly felt that way. “Haeri-ah, aren’t you getting off?” Her brother laughed, patting her helmet. She looked over at the tall building and nodded, unsure of how they’d gotten home so quick. He’d already turned the bike off and was waiting by the time she’d realized it. Sliding off, she handed him the helmet to put away before he followed her upstairs to her apartment. “Why were you with them earlier?” he asked once they were inside with the door closed. He looked around the apartment, raising an eyebrow at the poor conditions. “I wasn’t with them, they were with me.” she corrected, dropping her bag by the door. “Are they giving you trouble? You need to tell Oppa if they bother you.” Haeri shook her head and gestured him to sit in the chair beside the stack of books. “They’re really annoying but they don’t bother me. I wanted to ask you though..” “Hmm?” he asked, looking up at her. “Are they..I mean, what are they? Why was the situation like that earlier?” Jiyong blinked, shaking his head. “Don’t worry about it. Just stay away from them. But, why are you living in a place like this? You should’ve told me you were coming. I could’ve gotten you a much nicer apartment, Haeri-ah.” She shook her head and got up to hug her brother. “Ani, I like it here Oppa. I’m really glad you’re so close too.” He kissed her head and hugged back, “I’m glad too, I missed you.”

Haeri laughed and nodded, enjoying a story her brother told her as they headed down the stairs an hour later, back to the bike left beside the curb. “It’s not the same as real ramen but it’s close. You’ll see sometime.” he grinned, ruffling her hair. She nodded again and they both looked over at the rowdy boys approaching the building beside Haeri’s. “They live next door Haeri?” Jiyong asked darkly, turning to her. She shrugged, honestly unsure. Their laughter dimmed as they looked over at the pair and Pyo waved. “Oppa! You live here too?” He was quickly elbowed by Yukwon and looked over in pain. “Oppa?” Jiyong scoffed. “I’m not your Oppa. You’re on thin ice already, being this close to my baby sister. Don’t push it.” he added and Haeri stifled a laugh at the misunderstanding. “You didn’t tell me they lived next door.” “I really didn’t know Oppa.” she replied, meeting Zico’s gaze. ‘So that’s how he just appeared last night.’Go back upstairs Haeri. I’ll send Seungri for you tomorrow.” Jiyong stated, getting on his bike. “Ani, that’s not necessary!” Haeri whined, embarrassed that he thought she needed a chaperone at her age. “That’s final.” he growled, shoving his helmet on before speeding off. She looked over at the boys who were making faces at the disappearing bike and sighed. “You’re going to get me in trouble.” she complained, crossing her arms. “Yah, you’re going to get us in trouble!” Kyung defended, shaking his fist again. “Do you want to die?!” Haeri called, throwing her hands up. “DO YOU WANT TO DIE?!” Kyung called back, mimicking her. “Enough!” Zico yelled angrily, looking between the two. “You really live there?” Jaehyo asked, pointing at the building Haeri stood beside. She nodded and looked over as Pyo clapped his hands together. “This is daebak! Now we can hang out with Oppa all the time~” he skipped over and took her arm in his, smiling. “Can you cook too?” “Yah, didn’t you hear my Oppa?” she growled, shoving him away and giving him a stern look. “That won’t stop us from loving you, Kwonnie~” Yukwon grinned, making a heart above his head. “What is my life?” Haeri whined, turning around to head back upstairs. “Wait for us!” Kyung called, hurrying to follow her. She whipped back around, “Ani! You can’t! I’ll be killed if Oppa even sees us together again and besides, why would I want you in my house?”. “Your Oppa would kill us, not you.” Jaehyo corrected, moving to stand with Kyung at the bottom of the stairs. “He’s not much of a threat either. It’s not as if we’re harassing you, is it?” B-Bomb asked, shrugging. “Even if it seems that way, you like the attention don’t you, Yukwon-ssi?” Taeil added as he joined the group forming at the bottom of the stairs. Haeri groaned and hung her head. “You’re not coming up. I have a lot to do, don’t you know?” “What, catch up on your fanfictions?” Pyo asked, rolling his eyes. “S-Shutup! I’m not reading them anymore! I have to finish my homework and go the electronics store to get a new router, and somehow find time for dinner too.” “We can help you with your homework~” Jaehyo offered. “We’ll even go and get your router for you too.” Taeil chimed in, linking arms with Jaehyo. “If you make us dinner.” Pyo added last, joining the other two. “No way! I don’t have enough for everyone, and I bet you’d wire the router or something silly like that!” “So you’d still like help with your homework then?” B-Bomb asked, raising an eyebrow at the left out activity. “No no no no no!” Haeri yelled, stomping up the stairs. “What if we buy extra food too?!” Pyo called up to her. “ANI!” she yelled back angrily, just about fed up with her precious Oppa’s. Why was it so hard to ditch them? She’d never thought this would cross her mind, she’d always wanted to be close like this with them but now that she’d expirienced it she was nothing but exhausted and annoyed. “IF YOU CHANGE YOUR MIND OPPA, WE’RE IN 314!” Pyo called before following the boys back to their own apartments. ‘Who cares what room you’re in? I’ll never visit you.’ she thought to herself before finally opening her door and closing it behind her. She checked the wall clock and sighed, 5:19. It was too late now to get to the electronic store, it’d be dark by the time she finished her homework and being in a  new neighborhood that she clearly knew nothing about wasn’t an aid to walking by herself at night. Her phone buzzed in her pocket and she pulled it out, checking the new text. ‘New story updates! :You’re My B.A.P Girl’ She sighed, ‘Of course it has to be that one.’ Now she had to go and get a router. Maybe she’d finish her homework in time if she worked hard enough.
