CHARACTER 01
Park Hanbyul
It might have been a mistake to go to the Cheongsu University library today. For doing work, that is. She’d thought it could inspire her to work hard, but in reality, all it had accomplished was remind her of her own college years, those dreadful, beautiful, awful, amazing years. It made her regret not trying harder in school.
But then again, she can’t really complain. To many others, her life is nearly picture-perfect, travelling all over the world and working from home on her own time. Only she herself knows the difficulties of travel and the discipline needed to work from home.
Hanbyul packs up her stuff with a sigh, trying her best not to disturb the med student at the neighboring table. He’s been here all day, engrossed in a textbook as thick as War and Peace, barely taking bathroom or snack breaks. And to think that her childhood dream was to become a doctor… Hanbyul shudders, pushing her chair back to stand up. She’s never been so glad for her change of plans. She might not make that much money, but hey, at least she’s not still in school at age 29.
Well, okay, that’s unfair. Her best friend back home is still in school for a Ph.D. Who knew science degrees could take so long? Admirable path, but not for her. She’s happy enough with her translation gigs, thank you very much. At least she doesn’t work for anyone else and can do whatever she wants with her free time.
Like live in other countries. How long has it been since she went back home to America? At least a couple of years, right? When she decided to move out, her parents asked her to not go too far, so of course she went halfway across the world to China. In her defense, she missed her grandparents. But then she moved to Korea, to her father’s home country, despite not having any connections, and here she is a couple of years later, enjoying her life.
For the most part.
She looks up at the cloudy sky. A gap in the clouds in the distance lets rays of sunlight through, like solid beams landing upon the Earth. Hanbyul doesn’t believe in any gods, but this
