TEASER 01
The Shop
“Hi, welcome to Lavender Teahouse, how may I help you? Wintermelon milk tea with rainbow tapioca, half sugar no ice? That will be $5.99, please. Thank you, we’ll have your order out shortly.”
The shop is surprisingly busy at this time of day—that is, 10 in the morning—with waves of college students milling around between classes, relaxing for a moment in the plush chairs or taking pictures in front of the neon heart sign hanging on the wall. Aside from them, there are plenty of work-aged adults around too, dressed in sharp and formal suits, phones pressed to their ears in urgency.
Later, there will be even more customers, mothers on errands with their children in tow, drawn to the delectable pastries behind the country, or elderly visitors dropping in for their daily tea time, sitting at one of the pretty tables with an elegant cup of Earl Grey. Then, around the early afternoon, the shop will be at its quietest. But that doesn’t mean a lack of customers; in fact, even then, the staff will greet the delivery workers and invite them in for a cup of water and a bite to eat as they wait for the busiest time of day.
It comes, every day, at 4pm sharp. This is when the children let out of school, hordes and crowds of parched, sugar-deprived kids rushing in with their pocket money to buy a treat or two, then hanging out as late as they possibly can to avoid doing homework. Ala
