The dusk air still had a slight chill for the end of April, and the current members of Mighty couldn't help but clutch at their costumes for warmth in the courtyard of Hero Headquarters. After Bloody Dove's break in and the release of the captured villains days prior, the team had been tasked to find The Ring.
Faction 8, the government officials that were over The Might, had the other heroes carry on with their regular missions and media duties. Meanwhile, 777 and The Real were being given secret tasks, that even the members of Mighty knew nothing about.
The search for The Ring was scheduled to begin at dawn, but Supernova convinced his teammates to meet him in the middle of the night first, for some reconnaissance. Once the heroes were right in the center of the courtyard, he peered into the sky before taking out his second phone — his hero phone. He set his phone onto the ring light and stand he brought out with him, positioning the angle to have clear view on both the ground and sky.
"Everyone ready?" He asked the others, finger hovering over the record button.
Faye had a flowy, purple cardigan over her costume, whose fairy-like concept was cute but ill fitting for the cold. Her dress stopped just inches above her knees, and she regretted not wearing her fleece-lined tights. "Do you think we can skip the photo op tonight, Nova?" He wasn't one of her favorite people to work with. Supernova retained so much of the energy they both possessed when they first joined The Might, and Faye simply did not.
Zeus shook her head before Supernova could even respond. "It's required tonight." She reached out to touch Faye's arm, but it was so fleeting that she barely grazed the cardigan. "But at least he's not going live."
"I can!" Supernova teased with a grin. "We could skip this whole mission and just answer fan questions on live instead. Let's give them all the dirty details, like who's ing who at Headquarters."
Voltage crossed her arms in front of her chest, tapping her fingers on her arm as she was starting to get impatient. "Get on with it, Nova, before I fry your phone."
The Mighty trainees, Nightmare and VR Angel, couldn't help but laugh at Voltage's threat. Yet it didn't seem to phase Supernova any, as he simply proceeded to press the record button and gesture to Nightmare.
"Night, if you will."
Nightmare stepped into the frame of the camera. She already knew what was needed of her as Supernova had prepped her earlier in the day. Though she couldn't extend herself to the full range of Seoul, she was able to reach the darkness and light at Headquarters and the surrounding neighborhoods. Shadows circled around her until they spread to cover any and all light within Nightmare's limited radius.
The new darkness seemed to open up the night sky, stars coming into view that were not visible to them before. "Hold that for me, will you?" He sat down next to Nightmare, facing the camera. He tilted his head back to stare into the sky, eyes focused on celestial entities.
Several feet behind the camera stood the rest of Mighty, all waiting for the results of Supernova's star reading. VR Angel plopped herself onto the cool grass, crossing her legs and pulling at her knee high white socks to make sure they stayed up. "So, he can tell the future?"
"Not exactly," Voltage explained, fingers still tapping at her arm. She shifted her weight to one leg to avoid sitting down on the ground, as the other woman had done. "He can basically see how the stars align in our favor. Right now, he's probably choosing different paths and methods to take to find The Ring. If the stars align, that's the right one. If not, he keeps choosing different options."
Reverb hadn't taken any time while Voltage was speaking to write down his own opinion on his notepad, tapping VR Angel's shoulder to show her what he'd written:
So, basically, he can tell the future!
He and VR Angel both chuckled quietly, trying to hide their amusement from Voltage. They only stopped when Supernova clapped his hands together and stood in two quick movements. Nightmare let out a sigh as she released hold of the shadows, and Supernova held out his arm for her to hold onto while she regained her energy.
Voltage's arms unfolded, and she stepped forward in anticipation. "Well? Did you find something?"
Supernova cast her a smug grin, simply replying, "Good always wins."
Ogong was disappointed in himself for being pulled into Faction 8's conference room. It wasn't something anyone ever wanted as they usually called heroes in to reprimand or punish. He'd used his powers in public while dressed casually. However, as he tried to state to Faction 8, Ogong had only done so in order to catch Vita. His mention of her name got zero reaction despite the fact that she was supposed to be dead, and his actions weren't excused.
And though he was simply warned to never do it again and given one week of suspension, Ogong hated that it interferred with his hero duties. Mighty had been given a new, very important mission. And he'd missed the initial meeting last night while awaiting the last few hours of his suspension. Fortunately, this was his first morning back in action.
Officially dressed in his navy blue and gold, staff at his side in its holster, Ogong left his apartment at Headquarters to find the other members of Mighty. He didn't get passed his door, where a notice told him to proceed to the Faction 8 conference room.
"I have done nothing this week but reflect during my suspension," He told the government officials as soon as he stepped into the room.
There were eleven members of Faction 8, each every bit as forgettable as the next. None held any higher power than the rest, and most of the heroes knew by now that they were merely the faces of the rest of the government, who controlled The Might. Their reactions to Ogong's outburst were minimal, and the one seated closest to him nodded once.
"We know. And we appreciate your serious approach to your duties and your commitment to your country. This isn't a meeting to punish you further." There was a lull in the official's words as he seemed to pause to correctly choose his next words. "While we are aware of the bond you've formed with Mighty, we have chosen you to keep a closer eye on your teammates. We wish to ensure that nobody is swayed by the villains."
Truthfully speaking, Ogong's allegiance was first and foremost with the government. He didn't hesitate to ask, "Is there anyone I should specifically watch?"
Several officials smiled at his quick response. The same official answered him. "No, just pay attention to all of them. Report back to us if you see or hear anything suspicious."
As Ogong left the conference room, a new confidence was instilled in him. Much like 777 and The Real, he was given a secret task that Faction 8 had only trusted with him. Maybe being invited to speak with Faction 8 wasn't always something to be feared, at least not for Ogong.
He found the others gearing up in the armory, grabbing anything that would aid their powers or skills. "Did you guys miss me?" He stood right the middle of the door frame, the light behind him giving his tan skin a soft glow.
Reverb held up both of his thumbs to show his approval at Ogong's return, and it was obvious that he was smiling underneath his mask. Supernova high-fived him, and the rest either greeted him verbally or gave him a wave.
"So, what's the plan?"
Supernova took the time to explain as the rest split up according to the plan they'd made. Though Supernova knew the direction to head in to find The Ring, he wasn't aware of the exact location. Reverb and Faye would leave first, so Reverb could use his sound detection to pinpoint a more precise location and signal the others. Faye was his backup in case things went wrong.
Reverb was humming as he and Faye entered Headquarters' garage. It was a dimly lit space with white brick on all walls and grey concrete lining the ground. There were at least ten vehicles, some basic and some better equipped for specific missions. The key that Reverb spun around his index finger was for one of the more regular cars. As they neared the car, he handed the keys off to Faye and made a pleading gesture with his hands.
Faye was slightly amused, but she took the keys regardless, getting into the driver's side. "You don't want to drive?"
Reverb quickly wrote on his pad before Faye could start driving.
I have to focus! Plus...I hate driving.
They started in the direction that Supernova sent them, as Reverb tried focusing on the voice of one of the villains that had been captured. The car was quiet for some time, only the sound of the quiet engine and other cars on the road to fill the silence. Faye forgot after a while that Reverb needed the quiet, humming quietly to herself.
She kept it up, humming louder with a small smile as Reverb started whistling along to her tune. He drummed his fingers on the dashboard to add a beat, but Faye started laughing at the suddenness of their music. "Shouldn't you be concentrating?" She asked, but it was far from a scolding.
You're right. But it's been a long time since I've seen your real smile.
Reverb's message had Faye's breath catch in . It almost annoyed her because even she couldn't remember when she last genuinely smiled around the heroes, except The Real. She sighed a breath of relief when Reverb seemed to be distracted once again by his powers, listening intently for any signs.
When he thought he heard the right voice, they pulled over near an abandoned hiking trail. Their steps along the trail were soft and slow, careful not to alert anyone as they started seeing different colored tents coming closer into view.
Faye sent her location to the others, so they could carry out the rest of the plan. She and Reverb would keep watch until the rest messaged that they'd arrived. Voltage and Nightmare would come from one side while Supernova and Ogong would come from the other. Zeus and VR Angel would stay back to catch anyone who would be able to escape.
The mission this time was to leave nobody behind, especially The Ringmaster. If they were to spot Bloody Dove, she was to be incapacitated so as not to harm anyone.
"Okay, they should be here in about twenty minutes," Faye told Reverb, crouching down to his level behind the bushes to stay hidden among the woods.
He had neither notepad nor pen with him, having left it behind in the car. His mask was now pulled up once again, and he turned to Faye with a smile in his eyes, removing a stray leaf from her hair.
It was gentle and kind, but Faye wondered if her kindness towards Reverb was being mistrued. She eyed the man pensively, wishing he could write down exactly what he was thinking in that moment. "Reverb—"
The younger man moved his hand over to get her to stop talking as a few members of The Ring walked past them. "I swear I saw someone over here," one of them said to the other as they headed back to their camp after a few minutes. Reverb let go of his senior's mouth, bowing his head as an apology to her.
They sat still in that spot, quiet, until they received messages from the rest of Mighty that they were all in place. Faye nodded once to Reverb, who handed her a pair of earplugs. She quickly placed them in her ears as he stood and took a few steps closer to the camp. Reverb let out a long, high pitched whistle. The whistle became higher and louder, and Reverb spread the sound throughout the camp. The Ring members started screaming at the pierce to their eardrums, most of them falling to their knees and covering their ears as best they could to avoid the noise.
As Reverb stopped the whistle, Faye took her earplugs out and stood to her feet. She rose her arms towards the sky, and every tent in the camp slowly rose to reveal any hidden villains, all of which were temporarily deafened by Reverb's attack. Faye tossed all the tents aside.
The two stood side by side as darkness overtook the camp. "That must be Nightmare. We should split up to help each side."
Faye was about to take off towards Ogong and Supernova when Reverb grabbed her hand to stop her. He shook his head when she turned to him and pointed to the sky, which was brightening just as quickly as it had darknened.
"What? Nightmare was supposed to keep it dark."
Reverb took Faye's phone from her hand, and he typed out a single message: I can hear Nightmare in the distance fighting.
Faye frowned at the message. "Are you sure it's her? Voltage is supposed to be her backup."
It sounds like that's who Nightmare's fighting.
