The morning was bright, the sun was high in the sky, and Im Jihan's red 2008 fiat was shining. He stood on the driver's side, smile wide as he gestured to the passenger side door. "Get in the car, Beom! You have to!" Without waiting for a response from the younger male, Jihan opened his own door and plopped himself down into his seat.
Joo Beom proceeded to purse his lips into a full pout, but it didn't stop him from getting into the car as he was requested to do. "Imji hyung, I don't know if I'm in the mood for—"
"A relaxing ride with your senior?"
Beom's pout dropped as his lips curved down into a small frown. He shook his head, letting his fringe fall into his face as his eyes fell into his lap. "You're not my senior." The words were softly spoken, barely audible even.
But Jihan heard every word, and he had to keep himself from sighing. He'd taken part in training the latest group of subjects, and the worst part of it was telling Beom that he was being dismissed as a minimal. "Let's just go for a ride!" Jihan didn't want to focus on Beom's sadness, so he moved to buckle the boy's seatbelt for him before taking care of his own.
They cruised through the side streets not far from Headquarters, Jihan turning up the music as one of his favorite songs started playing. The ride wasn't very long, but it did help to improve Beom's mood, at least temporarily. The two talked casually when Jihan wasn't singing sporadically his favorite lyrics of whatever song was on at that moment. After an hour or so, Jihan took Beom back to his home.
"Thanks for the ride, hyung. I had fun!" The kid waved at Jihan before making his way inside.
It wasn't until Jihan was about to pull off again that he noticed the little red and orange flowers lining the passenger side door. A smile was pulling at his lips before the man even had a chance to stop himself. He reminded himself that he didn't have any feelings about the small gift Beom had left behind or Beom himself. "I'm just trying to butter him up and talk to him about White Flower," Jihan told himself aloud as he pulled off from the curb.
Truthfully, he was supposed to be at the training center to help a few of the other heroes train the new subjects. However, Jihan didn't really feel like his presence was necessarily. Firstly, half the subjects were no longer there. Either, they became ill, were dismissed, or were quickly made into heroes for the sake of preparing them quicker. Supernova and Flare were more than capable of handling the remaining subjects on their own.
Instead, Jihan went to meet fellow hero, Ogong, at the cafe they'd found on one of their last missions. Ogong was already there, chin in one hand while the other hand spun a pen idly between his fingers. He perked up when he noticed Jihan walking in to join him.
"You know you're hella late. I was here like thirty minutes ago." Setting the pen on the table, he picked up his phone to peruse the menu he'd pulled up when he first arrived.
Jihan shrugged his shoulders, playing off his tardiness with a grin. "I was doing a good deed."
At that, Ogong glanced at the other over his phone screen and raised a brow. "Duh? We're heroes. But some of us know how to be on time. And— Have you stopped listening to me?"
Jihan's eyes were following a woman who had walked into the cafe, and he'd long ago stopped listening to whatever Ogong was telling him. "Sorry, sorry. But doesn't she look familiar?"
Ogong's eyes followed Jihan's to the woman peering at the desserts in the glass case. Her bangs were cut curt right above her eyes, creating a shadow as she bent down to further inspect the treats in front of her. "Kinda..." He stared harder, trying to remember where he'd seen the woman before, taking in her features when she finally stood up straight to order. "Wait! Doesn't she look like Vita?"
"Oh, Vita! That's who she looks like. But it can't be her. Didn't Vita...you know?" Jihan made a motion with his hand of slicing his throat with his thumb.
The woman sensed the eyes on her back and turned to stare directly back at Jihan and Ogong. "But—"
Before Ogong could say any more, the woman rushed out of the cafe, not bothering to wait for her money back or what she'd paid for. Ogong was up and out of his seat almost immediately, chasing her out of the cafe. Jihan was left sitting there in a momentary stupor.
"Why do we have to chase her?" He muttered to himself in irritance before following Ogong.
The hero was fast on her trail before he came to a complete stop. Pulling his arm forward then slapping it back, he used the air surrounding him to bring the woman closer to him. The civilians that were close were caught in the air current as well, which caused him to stop before he ended up hurting someone innocent. The woman almost fell to her feet when the air stopped pulling her closer, taking off again when she stabilized herself.
Ogong was about to start running again when he felt Jihan's hand on his arm. "Let's leave her alone."
"What?" Ogong's face twisted in confusion, setting a slight glare on Jihan for letting the woman get away. "Why? If that's Vita, we have to bring her back."
"Why?" Jihan repeated Ogong's same question. "What if she doesn't want to come back? Maybe that's why she's literally running away from you."
Ogong shook his head, all the confusion in his face replaced with a serious expression. "She signed the same contract we all did."
