Chapter 14

Redemption

Beomgyu took Youngtaek back to the fort, Heeseung promising to come over when he was ready. Beomgyu had gotten the message from Taehyun, but he wouldn't go when they were there. He wasn't ready to face them yet.

"So we're back here huh?" Asked Youngtaek as he and Beomgyu stood in front of the fort. "It's where Kai is laid to rest," explained Beomgyu as he opened the door to the fort and went inside to see how it was holding up.

Youngtaek was left to look around, spotting the cross nearby so he walked over and stood in front of it, reading the name on the cross before he reached out and traced the letters on the cross.

"Hello Kai," greeted Youngtaek as he sat down in front of the cross. "I'm here because Beomgyu wanted to introduce us, so hello, I'm Youngtaek," he explained.

"Your brother is still hesitant to open up to me it seems," he hummed. "But from what I've been able to gather, he is a good person," he added.

"It's okay though, I have things I need to explain to him at some point right?" He asked, leaning back on his hands as he looked up at the sky.

"I see you made yourself comfortable," remarked Beomgyu as he walked over and stood in front of the cross, standing behind Youngtaek who was still looking up at the sky. "It's nice here," hummed Youngtaek as he looked at Beomgyu before moving to get up, Beomgyu moving further away to give him some room.

"Taehyun says that it's Kai's birthday next week or something?" Asked Youngtaek. "It's actually today," mumbled Beomgyu. "But I think he told Heeseung so that I'd get here before they do," he added.

"Where'd Heeseung go anyway?" Asked Youngtaek. "I think he said he needed to stop by and see his parents before he left," explained Beomgyu. "I see," hummed Youngtaek.

"Where are we going after this?" Asked Youngtaek. "I don't know yet," hummed Beomgyu. "We may go travel the rest of Europe, who knows," he added. "That does sound like something fun to do," remarked Youngtaek.

Youngtaek and Beomgyu ended up sitting at the fire pit, Beomgyu lighting a fire once he had enough firewood. Beomgyu was in a solemn mood, being silent as he sat in front of the fire. Youngtaek could only offer his presence in comfort, not knowing what it was like for Beomgyu.

Beomgyu was fine with Youngtaek being close by, just offering his support by just being quiet and letting Beomgyu grieve in silence.

Heeseung arrived a few hours later, seeing that Youngtaek was not by the fire pit. "He's in the fort sleeping," explained Beomgyu as he poked at the fire with a stick, adding another log to it. "I see," hummed Heeseung.

"How'd meeting your parents go?" Asked Beomgyu. "It could've gone better to be honest with you," came the reply as Heeseung sat down across from Beomgyu on the other side of the fire pit.

"That bad huh?" Asked Beomgyu. "Well, they wondered what I was thinking when I decided to take Niki with me to the states instead of finishing school here before doing that," explained Heeseung. "I couldn't subject him to what we've been through, it's bad enough that we've returned here," he added.

"We're here for some reason or another," hummed Beomgyu. "You didn't need to come back with me you know," he added. "I felt the need to, especially when I learned of what happened to you," explained Heeseung.

"Nothing happened to me Heeseung," hummed Beomgyu. "Not without reason anyway," he added. "Just like what happened when we were human," he mused, looking up at the stars above them.

"Were we ever friends?" Asked Heeseung. "I feel like we were at some point, but ever since we've graduated from military school and joined different branches of the Russian military things have changed so much between us," he added.

"I think we were," came the answer as Beomgyu turned to look at Heeseung. "I don't think we ever strayed passed that, even after everything went on," he added. "I think our similar pasts had brought us together, and I cared enough to try and get you and your brother out," he explained.

"How the hell did you end up becoming part of the Spetsnaz anyway?" Asked Heeseung. "You know about Gunil and what he did," replied Beomgyu. "I do, but you were a nobody," said Heeseung. "But you still managed to get chosen by Jiseok to become his replacement?" He asked.

"What can I say, I left a good impression on him," hummed Beomgyu. "I did it in the name of my brother, and that was the reason really," he explained. "Also, it was either me or Yeonjun, and he ended up choosing me," he added.

"Did you say happy birthday to Kai?" Asked Beomgyu as he looked towards the cross. "I didn't, but I'll go do that right now," replied Heeseung as he got up, going to do so. Beomgyu got to his feet, checking on the dying embers before walking over to the fort to check on Youngtaek. After leaving a note saying he was going hunting he left the fort, walking over to Heeseung who was sitting in front of the cross.

"Did you want to go hunting?" Asked Youngtaek. "Why not," hummed Heeseung. "I know we'll have to hunt animals here," he added. Beomgyu nodded and motioned for Heeseung to lead the way. Heeseung got to his feet and sprinted off, going hunting. Beomgyu followed after him, keeping pace with Heeseung as they went hunting.

Youngtaek walked out of the fort after seeing the note, yawning as he went to sit in front of the fire pit. He poked at it with a stick to see if there was any embers left and went to gather some sticks and blow into it once he found a couple embers after placing the sticks down. He let the fire burn for a few minutes before adding to the fire and sitting back, listening to the sounds of the river nearby.
