Chapter Six

Smile

In the middle of an office room, Mark stood completely still. Despite his best attempts to remain calm, his heart raced, but all blood refused to return to his face. The man behind the chair, President Myoui, currently sat with the back of his chair towards Mark.

Ten minutes had passed since Mark's arrival and yet, not a single word had been uttered. The silence had attempted to stab away at Mark, but all he could hear was his heart beating profusely in his ears.

He wanted to say something, anything, to break the silence, however, he knew better than to speak out of turn. Breaking this silence could mean the end of his very life, so he forced himself to restrain his actions.

"Mark," President Myoui said with a stern voice.

"Yes, President Myoui?" Mark replied.

"Explain to me why Mina's body had been discovered," President Myoui said.

Silence. Thoughts scrambled through Mark's mind, but nothing would ever be adequate enough to find an answer to President Myoui's question. So, instead of spouting out nonsense, Mark remained silent.

A minute had passed before President Myoui said, "So, based on your silence, you don't have an adequate answer. Is my assumption correct?"

"Yes, President Myoui," Mark responded.

"So tell me, how, exactly, do you intend on fixing this situation?" President Myoui.

"In order to remedy the situation," Mark paused, "I will have to control the media by having them paint the image that you are distraught by the death and discovery of Mina and that you wish to have time to mourn in peace."

"And how will you handle Grandmother Myoui?" President Myoui asked.

For a moment, Mark remained silent. President Myoui tapped his fingers on the desk, which caused Mark's heartbeat to pick up once more.

"Well? How are you going to explain Mina's death to Grandmother Myoui?" President Myoui asked.

"I will, uh, explain to her that Mina has moved to California to further expand the company's research," Mark replied.

President Myoui's fingers stopped tapping on the desk as he got to his feet. Mark almost took a step back, but he stopped himself. He knew better than to further upset the President.

"Mark, your answers are merely subpar, but they will suffice for the time being," President Myoui said as he made his way around the chair and towards the window before he continued, "You may go."

"Thank you, President Myoui," Mark said as he bowed and left the room.

As soon as the door closed behind him, Mark let out a huge sigh of relief. He made his way down the hallway before he pulled out his cellphone and pulled up his contacts. After he selected a name, he put his phone up to his ear and stepped onto the elevator.

"Seulgi, it's me. I need a favor," Mark said as the elevator doors closed.

At Euijin's apartment, Daehyun stood on the balcony, his hood over his head and his hands buried away in his pockets. He stared blankly at the cityscape as the wind picked up.

Young Jae phased through the glass door as he said, "Aren't you cold? You should go back inside."

Daehyun remained quiet as Young Jae moved next to him.

"I was ready to take my life, you know," Daehyun said.

Young Jae frowned as he turned towards Daehyun.

"That demon would've taken both your soul and your power. That's a fate worse than death," Young Jae said.

"I don't care. I wouldn't have to continue living in this world," Daehyun said.

"But death is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. No matter how many times you get knocked down, you should rest before you get back up and continue fighting," Young Jae said.

"You know how many times I've heard some like that? Do you know how long I've been trying to make right?" Daehyun said as he finally turned towards Young Jae.

"I've been living for years with nothing ever going right for me! Yeah, I have a great degree, lots of experience, but for what? To be forced out of that field by the very person who I had once called a friend? To see the people I love being torn away from me? Day after day, all I want to do is hide in my room and cry because I have no control over my mental state!" Daehyun said as he turned away.

The force of Daehyun's voice forced Young Jae to step back. His entire being shook, his face warming up from the sudden rush of feelings coursing through him. He crouched down and covered his face as he tried to fight the urge to continue yelling.

"I don't want to feel this anymore. It would've been better if I hadn't been born," Daehyun said.

Young Jae frowned as he crouched down next to Daehyun and put his hand on Daehyun's shoulder. Tears filled Daehyun's eyes as he felt the warmth spread from where Young Jae touched him. His chest felt like it was ready to burst, but he fought to keep his emotions in check as he quickly stood up and cleared his throat.

"I'm going back inside," Daehyun said as he made his way back into the apartment.

Young Jae stood up and frowned as he watched Daehyun before he disappeared from his view. He turned and looked out at the cityscape and sighed.

"What do I do to help?" Young Jae quietly asked himself.

Euijin walked up to the iron gate and examined it. Besides the fact that the gate was mostly covered in rust, vines had taken over a good majority of the gate and fence. He moved some vines away and examined the design. Besides the logo of the rod of Asclepius, which encompasses a serpent-entwined rod, there was a chain and a lock on the gate. Alongside that, multiple signs that said 'KEEP OUT' had been plastered along the fence.

He sighed and examined the top of the gate and fence, which had spikes on each pole. He scratched his head and glanced around for a moment before he turned to Mina.

"How'd you get into this place?" Euiiin asked.

"I climbed," Mina said.

"What the heck?" Euijjn mumbled to himself as he turned back to the gate.

With a furrow of his brows, Euijin grabbed hold of the abundance of vines and attempted to pull himself up. He tried to use his feet to help further ascend himself, but his feet slipped every time he applied pressure in the bars. Not only that, but the bars would creak every time he did so, so he stood there.

"What the heck? How'd you climb this!" Euijin said.

"There's a hole in the fence in the side over there," Mina said as she pointed to the left.

Euijin glanced over at Mina before he turned to where Mina had pointed to. He released his hold on the vines and took a few steps back before he spotted the hole that Mina had mentioned.

"Was that there all along?" Euijin asked.

"Yeah, it was," Mina responded.

"You were kidding about climbing?" Euijin asked.

"Yep," Mina responded.

"Let's just go," Euijin said as he made his way over to the hole in the fence.

At the center of the main lobby for the M. Research Medical Corporation Headquarters, Mark stood with his arms folded and his foot tapping impatiently against the marble floor. He checked his phone every few seconds, but otherwise, he remained in place.

"So, what do you want?" A woman's voice from behind pulled Mark's attention.

He turned around and his gaze was met by a woman's. She work a pink button up blouse underneath a beige blazer, which she paired with black pants and heels. She wore light make up and her hair had been braided to the side.

"I need your help, Seulgi," Mark said.

Seulgi scoffed and said, "Help? The last time I tried to help you, you told me to stay out of your business and to leave you alone. But, since you were usually nice before that, I'll let you explain your actions first."

Mark looked away as he attempted to collect any and all sound answers that would satisfy Seulgi without giving away too much of that night. As he did this however, Seulgi folded her arms and cleared .

"If you aren't going to say anything, I'm leaving," Seulgi said.

Mark's eyes widened as he turned his gaze back to Seulgi and said, "Wait! I'll explain everything."

Seulgi raised a brow and said, "Well? I'm waiting."

A sigh escaped from Mark's lips before he said, "I didn't mean to be mean to you. I was having a bad day and I snapped at you. I'm really sorry about my actions so can you please help me out?"

Seulgi stared at Mark through narrowed lids before she sighed and said, "Fine. Apology accepted. So, what do you want?"

"You can basically do anything, right?" Mark asked.

"Depends what you want," Seulgi relied.

"I need you to make sure that the press remains out of our business. President Myoui wishes to mourn the death of his daughter in peace," Mark said.

"And you can't do it because?" Seulgi asked.

"Because I have to see to other business. Also, I need you to keep the police from speaking with Madame Myoui. She mustn't know at all costs. Do you understand?" Mark said sternly.

Seulgi rolled her eyes, folded her arms and looked away as she said, "Look, I'll help you out, but if you start speaking to me in that tone, you can do it yourself. Understand?"

Mark took in a deep breath and said, "Yes, I'm sorry. You know I'm on edge right now."

"Yeah, yeah. I get it. Anyway, I should get going," Seulgi said.

"Okay and thanks a lot for doing this," Mark said as he smiled.

Seulgi stared for a moment before she turned away in an attempt to hide the blush creeping up on her cheeks. She took in a deep breath and raised her hand up to her chest as she bit her bottom lip.

"It's no problem. Just know that you owe me, got it?" Seulgi said as she made her way out of the building.

Mark watched her until her figure disappeared. He couldn't help but hold his smile as he nodded to himself.

"What're you doing? Let's go in before it gets dark," Mina said.

"H-Hold on now. I need to prepare myself before I step into there," Euijin said.

Five minutes had passed since they had infiltrated the hospital grounds and yet, Euijin couldn't bring himself to go through the front doors. Inside, he could see countless spirits float along and he knew that he was going to have to deal with them all if they found out he could communicate with them. The worst part? He didn't know if there were any dangerous spirits within.

He took in a deep breath and pulled open one of the glass doors. Immediately, few spirits turned to look at him, but he knew better than to make it obvious that he could both see and hear them. So, he pressed forward and did what Daehyun did best: ignore people, or in this case, spirits.

While it seemed to work for the most part, he was immediately brought to a standstill as he stood at the first intersection. He examined his choices, but he couldn't figure out which way to go since he was given four different options.

Almost as if she could read his mind, Mina made her way up the steps without a word. Euijin followed after her as his eyes glanced around at the various spirits he passed. The spirits of both former patients and employees, as far as he could tell anyway, wandered the halls after all these years. There were some forms of disfigurement on each patient, which indicated the malpractice that had taken place here. How they died, however, he couldn't really tell nor did he want to know.

They came to a stop in front of the many rooms in the second floor. He had noticed that they hadn't passed a door or any sort of security that usually prevented the patients from getting out, which was a little nerve wrecking. With a deep breath, he opened the door and peeked within. He pulled out his cellphone and turned the flashlight on as he stepped inside.

He closed the door behind him as he examined the room. Oddly enough, not a single soul could be seen in the otherwise messy room. Paperwork and broke items, like bottles and furniture, littered the room, but it seemed as though nature didn't care too much as the growth had made its way even to here.

"Is it in here?" Euijin asked.

"Yes. It should be here," Mina said.

Mina led Euijin to the cabinets in the farthest corner of the room. Euijin opened the cabinet and immediately, his eyes landed on a relatively new red folder lying in the center. He lifted the folder and through the paperwork within.

"Why'd you pick this room?" Euijin asked.

"This was my great-grandfather's office," Mina said.

The second she finished her sentence, the room suddenly went cold. Euijin shivered as he held the folder close to his body and turned around. Besides him and Mina, there still wasn't anyone in the room, but it was clear that the room had become darker.

"I think we need to leave, now," Euijin said as he quickly made his way over to the door.

He turned the doorknob and attempted to push the door open, but instead of leaving the room, he walked into the door. The blood drained from his face as he attempted to push the door yet again.

"Oh, please for the love of god, open for me," Euijin pleaded quietly.

"Um, Euijin?" Mina said.

Euijin turned around and immediately spotted the lone spirit in the middle of the room. It was a male, probably in their late twenties or early thirties. Based off of his clothing, he had been a patient here when he was alive. The expression on his face was vacant, but danger practically emanated from him.

"So, Mina. How good are you with your ghostly abilities?" Euijin asked.

"I have ghost abilities?" Mina asked.

Euijin swallowed the lump in his throat as he said, "I was afraid of that."

Without warning, one of the broken tables flew at Euijin.

Chapter 9: Oooh, all the angel hierarchy stuff is really interesting! I just figured Youngjae saved Daehyun because of the “angels gotta help” idea. Given that youngjae doesn’t remember, does that mean he’ll end up remembering throughout the course of the story, or is it something that will always remain a mystery?
