Chapter Five

Smile

He sat there, lost in his thoughts as he stared blankly at the floor in front of him. His memories replayed that dreadful night over and over again and he just couldn't get it out of his head. Due to his current state, however, he had failed to realize the person approaching him from ahead.

"What's the matter, Mark? They give you too many assignments again?" a woman's voice asked.

Mark lifted his gaze, his eyes locked with the familiar dark brown eyes of his co-worker. He faked a smile and leaned back in his chair as he set his fork down.

"Morning to you too, Nayeon," Mark said as he motioned to one of the chairs at the table.

As Nayeon took a seat, she asked, "So? What's on your mind today? Wait! Let me guess, you heard about what happened to Mina, right?"

The second Mina's name came into the conversation, Mark's breath came to a stop. His eyes widened and his heart raced as his grip on his chair tightened.

"W-" Mark cleared his throat and continued, "What have you heard about Mina?"

Nayeon gasped as she leaned in and spoke in hushed tones, "You mean you haven't heard about what happened to Mina yet?"

Mark shook his head as he leaned in close. Nayeon examined their immediate surroundings before she continued.

"They found Mina's body in a river. Apparently, the police say that it was a murder and that they're trying to find the culprit behind it all," Nayeon said.

Mark leaned back in his seat, completely in shock. Nayeon frowned as she leaned closer and gently laid her hand on top of Mark's hand.

"I'm sorry that happened to Mina. Hopefully they catch the person who did it. Until then, just wait a bit," Nayeon said.

Mark hesitated, but eventually, he made eye contact with Nayeon and faked another smile. Nayeon couldn't help but smile back as she leaned back in her seat. Soon enough, her eyes land on Mark's untouched food.

"Oh! I'm sorry. I didn't mean to spoil your lunch," Nayeon said.

Mark glanced at his food and shook his head as he said, "No, I wasn't gonna eat it anyway. You can have it."

Despite Nayeon's attempt to protest, Mark carefully slide the food towards Nayeon as he stood up. With a quick wave and a small smile, Mark turned and left Nayeon alone at the table. Nayeon stared in confusion before she turned her attention towards the food and shrugged.

"I guess he wants to be alone. I hope he'll be okay," Nayeon said as she picked up the fork and picked at the food.

The second Mark turned the corner, he slowed to a stop, his head hung low and his hands balled up into fists. He leaned against the wall and closed his eyes as flashbacks of that night replayed in his head once more.

"Damnit," Mark said as he hit the wall.

His phone rang and as he pulled it out, he silently cursed to himself as he read the name on the screen. He contemplated for a moment, his thumb hovering over the red button, but he shook his head as he raised the phone up to his ear.

"Yes, President Myoui?" Mark said.

"Come to my office, now," President Myoui said.

In an instant, the phone call came to an end. Mark clicked his tongue as he stared at his phone. He raised it quickly and almost threw it across the hall, but he stopped himself when he made eye contact with another employee. He quickly straightened himself out and pocketed his phone as he made his way to President Myoui's office.

"So, I think it's time you tell us who did this to you and you better not skip any details," Daehyun said.

Mina nodded as she said, "You already saw Mark. He's my childhood friend and coworker."

Euijin bolted up to an upright sitting position as he said, "Woah woah woah, hold on. Your childhood friend killed you? That's not cool!"

"He," Mina paused, "I know that he didn't want to do it, but he had no choice."

"What do you mean?" Daehyun asked.

"Well, my father, he's been doing a few things that he shouldn't be doing and I tried to report it to the police with Mark's help, but then my father found out," Mina said.

"So he threatened Mark and that's how it happened? What could he have threatened Mark with that would make him commit murder?" Daehyun asked.

"I'm not sure, but I can assume that that's how it went," Mina replied.

"Okay, so we just have to link your father to the murder and whatever else he's done," Euijin said.

Daehyun sighed and said, "That's easier said than done, but, Mina, tell us where your father works and what he's done."

Mina hesitated, but she nodded as she said, "He's the current president and CEO of the M. Research Medical Corporation. He's been embezzling funds from investors, illegally selling drugs like chlorofoam, anti-depression pills, things like that. He's also been known for putting small clinics out of business through any means necessary."

"Do you have any proof that he did all that?" Euijin asked.

Mina pondered for a moment, then said, "I have some documents hidden away, but wouldn't it look bad if you turned it in since you're unrelated to it all?"

Euijin grinned and pointed his thumb at Daehyun as he said, "No problem. Daehyun has a Ph.D. in biology."

With no hesitation, Daehyun swiftly elbowed Euijin's side, which caused Euijin to fall out of his chair. As Euijin groaned on the floor, Daehyun cleared his throat and leaned back in his seat.

"I don't know what he's talking about," Daehyun said.

"The heck you do!" Euijin exclaimed.

Daehyun glared at Euijin and leaned closer towards him as he said in a hushed voice, "Shut the hell up before I kick your ."

As Daehyun leaned back in his chair once more, Euijin stuck his tongue out as he slowly got to his feet. He moved his chair away from Daehyun before he sat down.

As he rubbed his side, he said, "Daehyun could infiltrate the company as a new researcher for your father's company."

"How about you do it and I just stay home?" Daehyun said.

"Can you help, Daehyun? Please?" Mina asked.

Daehyun shot a glare at Mina, but his facial expression softened as he saw the pleading look on her face. He turned away and wiped his face as he let out a dejected sigh.

"Son of a, fine. I'll do it, but I can't guarantee that I'll get accepted," Daehyun said.

"No need to be modest! Weren't you valedictorian of your class?" Euijin said.

Daehyun glared at Euijin as he said in a low voice, "Shut the up before I end your life. And no, I wasn't vale-ing-dictorian."

After a few seconds had passed, Daehyun turned around and made his way to Euijin's computer. Euijin opened his mouth to say something, but he stopped himself and turned back to Young Jae and Mina.

"While Daehyun's doing that, what're we supposed to do in the meantime?" Euijin asked.

"We should probably retrieve the documents that I hid away. I need to make sure that it's safe," Mina said.

"Okay! So me and Mina will go get those documents and you can stay here with Daehyun," Euijin said as he turned to Young Jae.

"Oh, okay," Young Jae said.

A few minutes had passed before Daehyun and Young Jae were left alone in Euijin's apartment. While Daehyun filled out the application, Young Jae hovered over Daehyun's shoulder.

"Wow. You have so much experience. Why'd you stop working?" Young Jae asked.

Daehyun's body froze in place. Young Jae moved to the side to get a better look at Daehyun's face. He could see the look of anguish on Daehyun's face and as he turned his gaze towards Daehyun's hands, he noticed that his knuckles had gone white. He tried to get Daehyun's attention by waving his hand in front of Daehyun's eyes, but to no avail.

"Daehyun? What's wrong?" Young Jae asked.

A few seconds had passed before Daehyun shook his head and went back to typing. Young Jae was about to say something, but Daehyun raised his hand in front of Young Jae's view.

"Don't bother. I'm not talking about it," Daehyun said.

Young Jae merely nodded, which signaled for Daehyun to resume what he was doing. Young Jae shook his head as he moved back to his previous position.

"Thanks for helping Mina," Young Jae said.

"Yeah yeah, whatever," Daehyun mumbled to himself.

"So, you hid these documents at an abandoned  insane asylum? Why'd you pick this place of all places?" Euijin asked.

"It's where my great-grandfather used to work," Mina responded.

"He worked at an insane asylum?" Euijin asked.

As they pulled up to the rusted iron gate, Euijin couldn't help but shudder at the sight of the building. Nature had long since taken over the building and the surrounding area. While the sun illuminated the area, the building still gave off a dark aura that sent chills down Euijin's spine.

"You were okay with going in there? Alone?" Euijin asked.

"I was. Why?" Mina asked.

Euijin's body tensed up as he saw the many spirits wandering within the dark halls. He swallowed the lump in his throat as he turned his gaze to the rear view mirror.

"I guess it's too late to turn back," Euijin mumbled.

"Is something wrong?" Mina asked.

Euijin turned to Mina and said, "Places like these are hell for mediums."

He turned back to the hospital and sighed.

"Well, let's get going. The sooner we get it done, the better," Euijin said as he got out of the car.

Chapter 12: You know, it's always fun to read about just what Eujin and Mina get up to on the more human side of things while Daehyun and Youngjae struggle with the more angelic things. The Eujin/Mina interactions never fail to put a smile on my face!

Chapter 9: Oooh, all the angel hierarchy stuff is really interesting! I just figured Youngjae saved Daehyun because of the “angels gotta help” idea. Given that youngjae doesn’t remember, does that mean he’ll end up remembering throughout the course of the story, or is it something that will always remain a mystery?

Chapter 7: Every time it cuts to Mina and Eujin, I'm just imagining the character dynamic of Eugene and Rapunzel from Tangled! Or maybe those two dudes from Road to El Dorado?

Chapter 6: Despite being dead, Mina's got a nice sense of humour and is really hopeful about it all! She was probably like that when she was alive, huh? And again, Eujin proves to me why he's my favourite character!
