Chapter Twelve

Smile

As time ticked by, Euijin sat on his couch as his tv played a cartoon of three super powered little girls. Mina stood behind him, confusion on her face as her eyes remained glued to the screen. When Euijin glanced up at her, he couldn't help but chuckle to himself as he adjusted his sitting position.

"What're you so focused on?" Euijin asked.

Mina turned her attention to Euijin, as she asked, "Shouldn't we be doing something productive instead of watching cartoons?"

"You do have a point, but what're we supposed to do?" Euijin asked.

Although Mina wanted to answer Euijin's question, no answers came to her. She turned back to the television screen, lost in thought. Euijin remained quiet as he kept his focus on the cartoon currently playing. Once a commercial came on, Euijin turned his attention to Mina.

"How about we investigate this Mark fellow?" Euijin asked.

Immediately, Mina appeared to have been pulled out of her thought processes as she turned back to Euijin. A smile appeared on her face as she nodded.

"That's a good idea. We can figure out what it is that's causing Mark to act the way he did," Mina said.

"So, where do you think we should start?" Euijin asked.

Mina had began to say something, but she stopped herself. The obvious answer would've been her father, but they would've ended up at a dead end immediately. She knew that they needed to start somewhere smaller, somewhere even Euijin could manage without getting into trouble. The problem was, where would that be?

"What if we went to his home and checked to see if he has anything documented?" Mina asked.

"In a day of electronics?" Euijin asked.

With yet another block in their way, Mina folded her arms and hummed quietly to herself. It was true. Anything documented would've been sent electronically and if it wasn't anything important or if it was too important to hold onto, Mark wouldn't have held onto it any longer than necessary. However, one person did pop up in her head as she turned back to Euijin.

"We have another friend that he's close to. Maybe we can approach her," Mina said.

"Her?" Euijin asked.

"Nayeon, one of his friends," Mina said.

Euijin took a moment to think before he said, "I think it'll work. What do you know about her? How do we approach her? Wait, what're we supposed to ask her?"

"Hold on! One question at a time. Uh, we can probably ask her if Mark's been acting weird lately and if she knows what's bothering him," Mina said.

"I guess, but how are we supposed to approach her?" Euijin asked.

"We'll, uh, we'll think about it on the way! Come on, let's get going. She's going to have lunch soon," Mina said.

In an isolated area, Sowon stood with her arms folded while Young Jae stood in front of her with his gaze turned away. Instead of her usual happy demeanor, Sowon held a serious look on her face as she kept a stern gaze on Young Jae.

"You know the rules, Young Jae. Why did you let it happen?" Sowon asked.

Even though he wanted to give a response to her, Young Jae couldn't help but remain silent. He wouldn't even know where to begin explaining himself without creating more of a mess.

Sowon sighed as she shook her head and said, "Young Jae, this is a serious problem and I can't overlook it. You understand, correct?"

Young Jae nodded. Sowon took a moment to think as she turned around and paced back and forth. After a few seconds had passed, she paused and turned back to Young Jae.

"I'll let it slide this time, Young Jae, but once this is all done, you know I have to report it. You understand?" Sowon asked.

Surprise filled Young Jae's face as all he could muster was a simple nod. Sowon couldn't help but smile a little bit as she walked up to Young Jae and ruffled his hair a bit.

"Do not worry. I'm certain we'll find a way to remove the string. However, what this demon has said is rather disturbing," Sowon said as she rubbed her chin a bit and said, "Especially if the demon I encountered is the same one they warned about."

"What are we supposed to do then?" Young Jae asked.

Sowon remained quiet as she took a moment to run over her thoughts.

"I need to ensure that you'll be able to protect yourself, so maybe it would be best if I trained your powers," Sowon said.

"You can do that? I thought angelic power depended on your tier," Young Jae said.

Sowon smiled as she shook her head and said, "That's merely a myth, as the humans would say. Angels aren't born into their roles, Young Jae. Come, let's keep Daehyun safe until he finishes his shift."

Young Jae nodded and the both him and Sowon left the area.

"Is that her?" Euijin asked.

"No," Mina responded.

"What about her?" Euijin asked.

"No," Mina responded.

"Is that her?" Euijin asked.

"That's not even a woman! I already told you that I'd say if it's her or not," Mina said.

Euijin frowned as he rubbed his arms in a futile attempt to warm himself up. Both him and Mina stood in front of the main building for half an hour already and yet, no sign of Nayeon. While the cold didn't effect Mina at all, Euijin couldn't help but feel his hands hurt.

"Can I at least go inside?" Euijin asked.

"For what? It should be fine here," Mina said as she kept her focus on the main building.

"It's c-cold," Euijin said through chattered teeth.

"Ah, don't be like that! You'll be fine," Mina said as she ignored Euijin's attempts to display how cold he was.

"I c-could go for some h-hot chocolate," Euijin said.

"Shh! She's coming out!" Mina said.

Euijin looked up at his eyes landed on a woman in an large and puffy jacket. Even if Mina hadn't of said anything, he probably would've been able to spot her just because she stuck out in comparison to everyone else.

"Let's get going," Euijin said as he quickly crossed the street as he narrowly passed through traffic.

As Nayeon had rounded the corner, Euijin quickly rushed up to her and took hold of her arm. She gasped as she quickly turned to get a look at the person who dared touch her without permission.

"What're you doing?" Nayeon asked with a hint of panic in her voice.

"I, uh," Euijin paused.

With each second that passed, Nayeon couldn't help but grow more annoyed than scared. He had stopped her for a reason and now that he had her attention, he wasn't doing anything but wasting her time. Nayeon pulled her arm out of Euijin's grasp as she took a step back.

"Look, if you don't have anything to say, then keep to yourself," Nayeon said as she turned to walk away.

"Wait a minute!" Euijin said.

Nayeon paused, but was unsure why. She let out a sigh as she turned back to Euijin.

"Well? What do you want?" Nayeon demanded.

"Say something, Euijin!" Mina said.

"You're very pretty and I'd like to take you out for your lunch break!" Euijin said.

Regret immediately coursed through Euijin's veins as he felt his face and ears immediately heat up. He couldn't believe what he just said, but it was the only thing he could think of that wouldn't come off as creepy. Mina couldn't help but stare at him in disbelief, but unlike her, Nayeon couldn't help but feel flustered as she turned away in an attempt to hide her smile.

"That's nice of you to say, but I'm sorry. I'm interested in someone else," Nayeon said.

Nayeon turned back to Euijin and gave a small smile as she tried to walk away once more. Euijin, however, quickly moved in front of her, desperate to not lose his only chance.

"At least let me get you lunch. Are you on your lunch break?" Euijin asked.

"I'm um," Nayeon started, but she sighed as she said, "Okay, but at least tell me what your name is first."

"It's working?" Mina asked, dumbfounded.

"My name's Euijin! What's your name?" Euijin asked.

"I'm Nayeon. So, where'd you have in mind?" Nayeon asked.

Euijin froze up again as his mind ran blank. He didn't think he'd make it this far and now that he did, he had no idea where to bring her for lunch. He knew next to nothing about her, so that didn't help at all.

"Take her to a sushi place. She loves sushi," Mina said quickly.

"I know a place! It's, uh, not far from here. We can walk," Euijin said.

Nayeon couldn't help but feel a little worried as she said, "I'm starting to have doubts, but lead the way. I'm going to call someone though, so don't try anything funny."

Off to the side of the laboratory, Seohyun stood with her arms folded as she watched Daehyun. Her teammates somehow maintained their composure as Daehyun went about with his changes and consistent scrutiny of their research. Despite the research that they've been told to do, Daehyun took it seriously and she knew that he would be the one to fix any problems they had. Whether he succeeded or not was an entirely different question. She couldn't help but smile.

She made her way out of the laboratory, leaving Daehyun with the rest of her teammates. Once she had her gear off, she made her towards the door. As she neared it, both Sowon and Young Jae phased through the door and towards Daehyun. She took hold of the doorknob, but she paused and turned as she stared for a moment before she left the room.

Young Jae and Sowon phased through the glass wall as they made their way over to Daehyun, whom had just finished with his adjustments on his teammates' work. Daehyun briefly glanced at the two angels before he made his way over to the other side of the laboratory with the two angels in tow.

"Daehyun. We've decided that we need to help you learn how to better control your medium abilities," Young Jae said.

"I'm busy," Daehyun quietly said as he turned his attention to the closest thing near him.

"It's important that you learn how to be a medium if you're to work here," Sowon said.

"Then next time, you get Euijin to do this. My specialty is biology, not mediumism or whatever the hell you call it," Daehyun said.

"But it's necessary for not only your safety, but the success of assisting Mina with her predicament," Sowon said.

Daehyun wanted to respond to her, but he stopped himself. Instead, he chose to remain silent as he kept his focus on the work before him. Sowon frowned and pulled Young Jae away. As they remained off to the side, Sowon turned her attention to Young Jae.

"I believe that he is slowly accepting this. For now, we must remain vigilant with our watch, at least until Daehyun has safely returned home. Then, we can begin your training," Sowon said.

As lunch went by, Euijin couldn't help but feel nervous as Nayeon happily ate her meal. How was he supposed to bring up Mark in this conversation? Would it even be wise to do so when he, a random stranger, had suddenly brought this woman out to lunch on the preface that he was simply interested in pursuing her as a potential love interest? No. He knew that he needed to go slow if he had any hope of this succeeding. It probably didn't help that Mina continued to loom over them.

"Well? Aren't you going to ask?" Mina asked.

Euijin hesitated, but once he finally worked up the courage, he asked, "So, have you always lived in New York?"

Nayeon thought about her answer as she chewed. When she decided on what she wanted to say, she shrugged to herself as she finished chewing and took a sip of her water before she spoke.

"Why do I get the feeling that you're not actually here to take me out on a date?" Nayeon asked.

"Uh, w-what do you mean by that?" Euijin asked.

Mina couldn't help but turn away and shake her head while Nayeon sat back in her seat and gently wiped with her napkin. She waited for Euijin to speak further, but when it was clear that he wouldn't give her the answers she wanted, she laid her napkin on top of her lap once more as she picked up her chopsticks.

"Your silence alone was enough for me. So if you're not here for a date, then what do you want, exactly?" Nayeon asked.

"Just answer her, Euijin. She doesn't like when people waste her time," Mina said.

After he took a long sip of his water, Euijin finally said, "I need to know more about Mark."

Nayeon raised a single brow as she asked, "Mark? What kind of information do you need on him?"

"I need to know if there's been anything bothering him lately," Euijin asked.

"Like?" Nayeon responded.

"Like, has he been having trouble with work? Anyone pressuring him into doing things he doesn't want to? Things like that," Euijin asked.

Nayeon narrowed her eyes as she sat back in her seat and folded her arms. Panic ran through Euijin's entire body, but he had to hope that Nayeon would respond to him.

"Why should I tell you any of this? How do you even know Mark?" Nayeon asked.

"I, uh," Euijin stopped himself as he looked away.

Nayeon stared for a moment before she let out a gasp. Euijin, surprised by her reaction, immediately looked up. Instead of something worth gasping over, however, Euijin stared at Nayeon, whom stared back with a large smile on her face.

"You actually have a crush on Mark and you're worried about him, aren't you!" Nayeon exclaimed.

"Wha-What!" Euijin said.

Nayeon couldn't help but hold her smile as she leaned forward and said, "It's okay. Your secret is safe with me. I'll let you in on some of his problems, but it's gonna cost you. Got it?"

"I, what?" Euijin said.

"Just say yes!" Mina exclaimed.

"Yes, okay! I got it! It'll cost me," Euijin said.

"Great! So, what do you want to know about?" Nayeon asked.

Chapter 9: Oooh, all the angel hierarchy stuff is really interesting! I just figured Youngjae saved Daehyun because of the “angels gotta help” idea. Given that youngjae doesn’t remember, does that mean he’ll end up remembering throughout the course of the story, or is it something that will always remain a mystery?
