Chapter Thirteen

Smile

As the other researchers left for the day, Daehyun lagged behind. He glanced over his shoulder every now and then to ensure that he was completely left alone before he pulled away from the table. He quickly looked over his phone before he turned to Sowon and Young Jae.

"I should see if I can get more information on the place," Daehyun said.

"What kind of information?" Young Jae asked.

"I need to confirm the information we got from Mina's files somehow. I have to somehow manage to ensure that there's undeniable proof, otherwise Mina's father will get away with all of his crimes," Daehyun said.

"We just simply have to purify the corruption and then he should confess to the crimes on his own," Sowon said.

"Okay, then how do we purify the corruption?" Daehyun asked.

"By removing the demon that plagues this building," Sowon responded with a smile.

"So, you and Young Jae can do that and I'll just quit, right?" Daehyun said.

"It's not as simple. The demon's hold is rather... well, strong. We need you to apply pressure onto the demon which in turn, will weaken the demon's hold on the humans affected here," Sowon said.

"Pressure as in?" Daehyun asked.

"We would have to corner the demon, or in this case, the human that they are currently possessing. Once they are cornered, they'll be forced to show themselves," Sowon said.

"So basically, my current idea," Daehyun said.

Sowon took a moment to think before she said, "Exactly!"

Daehyun pinched the nose of his bridge before he turned around and took in a deep breath. As he shook his head, the doors to the laboratory opened up and Seohyun entered the room. Daehyun quickly turned around and stared at her while Seohyun held a surprised look on her face.

"Daehyun? What're you still doing here?" Seohyun asked.

"I was simply finishing up work before leaving. Why're you back?" Daehyun asked.

"I was going to lock up the lab, but it said someone was still inside," Seohyun said.

"Oh, well I'm almost done," Daehyun said.

Seohyun nodded before she turned and made her way back out of the room. Once the doors closed behind her, Daehyun let out a sigh as he gathered his belongings.

"Eventually, I'll have to go snoop around the offices higher up. Can you locate a few of these offices for me?" Daehyun asked.

"Sure, but which one of us are you asking?" Young Jae asked.

"Sowon will have to do it. She's the stronger one out of the two of you, so she'll be able to protect herself if anything happens," Daehyun said.

"Then who'll protect you if anything happens to you?" Sowon asked.

"Young Jae. Even though he's annoying as hell, I trust him enough with my life," Daehyun said as he slipped his coat on and continued, "Anyway, it'll have to wait until later. I can't exactly go snooping around on my first few days of work. It'll look suspicious."

With a nod of agreement from each being, they all made their way to the door.

In an empty hallway, two people turned a corner as they made their way through. Each step they took echoed and bounced off the walls as they, themselves, remained silent. As they approached a room located on the right side of the hallway, the man who led the two of them turned around before he took a step back and motioned for him to enter. The second man nodded and entered the room.

The room was completely white and when paired with the bright lights above, it dared to blind anyone whom entered. Along the walls appeared to be lockers, but they were far too large for storing just simply paperwork. In the middle of the room held four tables total. While one held paperwork and a lamp, the other three were empty, save for a single body with a cloth covered over them. The only other person alive in the room had sat at the farthest table before he glanced up at the man whom entered.

"Excuse me, but you're not allowed in here," the man said.

"I believe we spoke briefly before, Doctor Park. My name is Mark. I'm here to confirm the identity of the body on behalf of Mister Myoui," Mark said.

"Ah, of course. My apologies, but we don't get many visitors here. I had completely forgotten," the man said as he stood up and said, "You can simply call me Jinyoung, but... I suppose you didn't come here for a simple chat."

Jinyoung closed the folder on his table before he made his way over to the table on the opposite side of the room from him. As he slowed to a stop at the table, he took a hold of the cloth.

"Are you ready?" Jinyoung asked.

Mark simply nodded to which, Jinyoung delicately folded the sheet over to only reveal the body's head. As Mark gazed down at the face, which turned out to indeed be Mina's, he couldn't help but feel a wide variety of emotions course through his being as he tried to keep his composure. After he took a deep breath, Mark nodded again, to which Jinyoung covered Mina's face with the cloth once more.

"Now, I need verification on your identification to ensure that you're related to her, but seeing as how you're here on someone else's behalf, I'm afraid you'll have to let her relative know so that they may come and sign the papers," Jinyoung said.

"Understood. I will be taking my leave then," Mark said with a brief nod before he turned and made his way out of the room.

As soon as he started down the hallway, the man whom waited at the door followed close behind him. Mark let out a sigh as he took out his phone to check the time.

"Notify President Myoui of the current situation. I will have to head elsewhere to see how Seulgi fairs," Mark said.

The man merely grunted to notify that he understood. Mark placed his phone away as they approached the end of the corridor and turned the corner.

Meanwhile, back in the morgue, Jinyoung sat back down at his seat as he glanced over the paperwork once more. He had picked up his pen, but his eyes drifted from the paperwork and back up to Mina.

Once back home, Daehyun laid his things on a nearby chair before he laid himself across his bed. He sighed as he closed his eyes and allowed himself to slowly lull to sleep. Sowon and Young Jae remained at the doorway for a brief moment before they made their way up to the rooftop.

"I believe it is time to train your abilities, Young Jae," Sowon said.

"How do we do that?" Young Jae asked.

Sowon moved over to the opposite side of the rooftop as she said, "By simply practicing over and over again."

As she turned around, she took note of the confusion on Young Jae's face. She couldn't help but smile as her wings spread out, to which Young Jae did the same.

"Yes, it is that simple, Young Jae. However, you'll have to work hard if you'll be able to defend Daehyun from that demon. Even I will have difficulty against that demon, so, should I fall..." Sowon trailed off as her smile faded.

"You won't fall. You'll stand strong and keep everyone safe. I'll even help!" Young Jae said.

Sowon smiled once more and nodded as she said, "Okay. First, I will have to test you on strength level as well as your tactical level. Once I've found a good point, I'll know where to train you from there."

Young Jae nodded and immediately, both of them began to emit their auras. To Young Jae's surprise, Sowon appeared to have imitated his current level as opposed to showcasing her own level.

"Alright. Let's begin," Sowon said.

Two days had passed before finally, Daehyun made it to his first day off. While it didn't seem like a lot to some people, Daehyun didn't exactly have the drive to work like he used to. So, instead of getting up and doing anything, he found himself in his living room, asleep.

Sowon stood in front of the couch, her arms folded as she stared down at Daehyun. She glanced up at the clock behind her, which told her it was two-'o-clock. She clicked her tongue a few times as she crouched down in front of Daehyun and frowned.

"Why're you sleeping so late?" Sowon quietly said to herself.

When it became clear that Daehyun wouldn't awaken on his own, she reached forward. However, just as she was about to touch Daehyun's arm, Daehyun's cell phone rang. She quickly moved to the side as Daehyun bolted up to a sitting position. He let out an annoyed sigh as he reached over for his phone and laid back down.

As he raised his phone up to his ear, he said, "Hello?"

"Hurry up and get over here! I have so much information, it's practically flowing out of my pockets! Hurry hurry!" Euijin said before he hung up.

Daehyun sighed as he let his arm drop before he left his phone on the floor. He had just draped his arm over his eyes before he slowly moved his arm away and made eye contact with Sowon.

"What do you want?" Daehyun asked.

"It's already two. You should get up and be productive," Sowon said.

"No. I'd rather not," Daehyun said as he covered his eyes once more.

Sowon sighed as she pat Daehyun's head and left Daehyun's apartment. Daehyun waited for a moment before he sat up and examined the area. When he was certain that Sowon was nowhere in sight, he let out a relieved sigh before he laid back down and closed his eyes.

Seconds turned into minutes, but despite his attempt to fall back to sleep, he couldn't help but constantly hear Sowon's voice in the back of his head. No, it wasn't a soothing and lovely type of voice. Instead, all he could hear was her nag at him to get him to get up and do something. With an annoyed groan, Daehyun got to his feet before he ruffled his hair out of frustration.

"Fine! I'll get the hell up!" Daehyun said as he grumpily made his way to his room.

"Daehyun! You're got here surprisingly fast," Euijin said.

Daehyun mumbled to himself as he pushed past Euijin. With his shoes off, he made a beeline for the couch before he plopped himself down. As soon as Euijin joined him on the couch, Daehuyn leaned back in his seat as he turned his attention to Euijin.

"So, what kind of information did you end up getting?" Daehyun asked.

"I got some info on Mark," Euijin said as Mina entered the room.

"Why'd you get info on Mark?" Daehyun asked.

"Why not? We know he's dangerous, so it'd make sense to be careful around someone like him," Euijin replied.

"And you'll also want to get through the right hand before you get to the boss," Mina said.

Daehyun glanced over at Mina for a moment before he turned his attention back to Euijin. He let out a sigh before he nodded.

"Starting to sound like a crime drama. Anyway, what'd you end up finding out?" Daehyun asked.

Euijin got to his feet and cleared his throat. As he paced back and forth, he said, "Mark is quite an interesting fellow. From what my source has told me, he had been forced to work a lot more about a year ago after the mysterious disappearance of the person that had worked directly underneath Mina's father. It seemed recently, however, that he's become busier than before, most likely due to the discovery of Mina's body."

"Is that all?" Daehyun asked.

"That's not all! Apparently, Mark had just recently visited the morgue to confirm that it was indeed Mina. So, we can be safe to say that Mina may get a burial, but we can't really say for sure since it'll be her father's choice," Euijin said.

"Are we supposed to do something about that? We don't exactly have a say on the matter," Daehyun said.

Mina moved a bit closer as she said, "We can speak to my grandmother. He'll be forced to listen to her."

"Well, if that's the case, wouldn't your grandmother just automatically want you buried with the rest of your family?" Daehyun said.

"I suppose you're right," Mina said as her voice trailed off towards the end.

"Okay, so you found that much out. Anything else?" Daehyun asked.

"I-" Euijin opened his mouth to say something, but he stopped himself.

Daehyun sighed as he said, "So, nothing else? Nothing that can help?"

Mina hesitated, but when Euijin didn't say anything, she said, "Do you think we would be able to find anything at Mark's apartment?"

Daehyun hummed quietly to himself before he said, "It's worth a try if it means getting any dirt on him. Maybe we can ask Sowon to do it for us since she can get in and out without being noticed."

"Wait! You can't ask an angel to do something illegal!" Euijin said.

"I mean, they do it all the time," Daehyun said with a smirk.

"Then it's settled!" Mina said.

Euijin quickly jumped to his feet as he said, "Not you too, Mina!"

"Well, it doesn't hurt to ask, right?" Mina said.

As Daehyun got to his feet and made his way over to the door, Mina followed soon after. Euijin, uncertain of what to say, quickly rushed after them.

Chapter 12: You know, it's always fun to read about just what Eujin and Mina get up to on the more human side of things while Daehyun and Youngjae struggle with the more angelic things. The Eujin/Mina interactions never fail to put a smile on my face!

Chapter 9: Oooh, all the angel hierarchy stuff is really interesting! I just figured Youngjae saved Daehyun because of the “angels gotta help” idea. Given that youngjae doesn’t remember, does that mean he’ll end up remembering throughout the course of the story, or is it something that will always remain a mystery?
