Prologue
Feathers [앞으로 잘 부탁해]
As dawn broke lined the horizon with faint yellow, a certain redhead peeked down, onto Earth, from Heaven. It was an extremely familiar routine for Sakura, as she checks on her human daily.
At the age of 21, and every hundred years afterwards, all angels are assigned to a human, who they have to look over for the rest of their lifespan. They have the option of remaining as an angel and look over them from Heaven, or they could transform into humans and protect them from Earth. Most angels prefer going down to Earth.
However, it is forbidden for the angel to fall in love with the human and vice versa.
In Sakura’s case, she was turning 21 next month. And her fated human was Lee Chaeyeon, 19. For the past 2 years and 11 months of observing the girl, Sakura has grown a certain interest in the younger and has always been excited to turn 21 to meet her.
Chaeyeon wasn’t anyone special.
In fact, she was just like every other human, with an approximate lifespan of 87 years. Sakura didn't know why she, herself, was so intrigued by Chaeyeon. It wasn’t love for sure. At least not yet. And hopefully, for Sakura’s sake, it’s not.
Ever since Sakura heard how her beloved senior, Irene, fell for her human, Wendy, ended up, the younger often had nightmares about meeting the same end. Irene was the first angel, brave enough to break the rules and loved Wendy freely. However, the moment she declared her love for her human, Wendy was met in an accident, resulting in near death. As for Irene, she was called back to Heavens and Sakura has never seen her once again. It was rumored that she was banished from the world, no longer existing.
Sakura laid herself on the fluffy white cloud as she continued her observation on her human. As usual, the girl woke up diligently and started her day, waking her sister up and preparing breakfast for her family without any hint of laziness, unlike a certain angel. Sakura was sure puzzled at her diligence and aspired to be like her.
As Chaeyeon arrived in school, the first thing she did was to ensure her little sister, Chaeryeong, went to class instead of running to Ryujin’s class. Her little sister was head over heels for the latter and was dying to see her every minute of her life.
Talking about relationships, it was kind of obvious that Chaeyeon liked her senior from the dance class that she signed up for. Kwon Eunbi, Sakura learned from Chaeyeon’s diary. They made a cute pair, Sakura thought. Every time Eunbi’s name came out from Chaeyeon’s mouth, Sakura would get a little anxious. Perhaps she was worried for Chaeyeon. She couldn’t tell if Eunbi reciprocated her human’s feelings, or if she was just being the nice motherly figure around everyone.
Sakura was more worried that she wouldn’t be able keep her identity from Chaeyeon when she starts to live on Earth. It was her first time being a guardian angel. Normally angels would stay in Heaven during their first experience. Despite much advice and explanation from her seniors, Sakura still chose to travel down to Earth for her job.
No matter what was said to her, the cherry-blossom girl remained persistent to her decision. Staying in Heaven was painful for Sakura - Chaeyeon didn’t even know of her existence.
Chaeyeon was just so interesting to the older, that Sakura was dying to make friends with her. Just imagining walking with the younger, shopping at malls till they were broke, or even, cuddling back at home, watching a movie, sent tingles of excitement down the angel’s spine.
Lee Chaeyeon.
No matter how much Sakura tried to get her name out of her mind, it never worked. The name repeated itself endlessly in Sakura’s mind, as if haunting the angel. The only thing that could help was to game.
And Sakura did, for the rest of the time Chaeyeon was asleep.
