Warmth
Moon: Winter Hearth Drabble ProjectContext: Irene and Wendy are university students and housemates.
Inspired by a chinese song called 暖暖(Warm)
Warmth.
To Irene, her housemate, Wendy, is the very definition of it. Wendy resonates warmth in the bicycle rides she gave Irene, regardless of the seasons. It did not matter how sweaty Wendy would be especially during summer, Irene would still cling on to her. Wendy emits warmth whenever she bakes her favourite cakes even when it is not a special occasion. It did not matter how it sometimes tasted odd, Irene would eat them all.
Wendy is warmth, in every littlest thing she does. In the laundry she helps in, the take outs she brings back for them, the cough medicine she leaves out for Irene.
Yet, Wendy gives all these warmth to others and leaves very little for herself. It showed in the way her back would hunch in despair when she thought she did poorly during a piano recital. It manifests in the way Wendy huddled in a corner, unable to concentrate on her revision on music theory and history. It was accentuated by how, despite the difficulties she faced, she would always put on a smile before everyone on stage and hide her sadness.
Wendy would be having another recital. This time round, Irene was determined to help put Wendy in her best condition to perform.
“Stressed out?” Irene asked as she poked her head into Wendy’s room.
The future pianist was at her electric keyboard, scribbling some things on the score.
“D-Did I disturb you?” Wendy asked, slightly in panic.
Irene chuckled. “I want to be disturbed by you.”
A weak smile came into Wendy’s face and she set down the pencil in her hand.
