The Beautiful Smile

The Restaurant

The two didn't talk much the following days after they had the spaghetti meatball talk. Minjoo would nod her head and smiled everytime they crossed path in the restaurant but Yujin just didn't seem to care to at least notice the brunette's existence. They rarely crossed path anyway since Minjoo was preoccupied with her part time job in the convenience store and Yujin was busy preparing the weekend opening with Mr. Kim. Even when Minjoo was helping with the restaurant at night, Yujin had barely talked to her and sometimes she even acted like the brunette wasn't even there. Though the brunette didn't really expect Yujin being all amicable after the talk, but she couldn't deny that she was hoping that Yujin would warm up to her a little since they were going to live under the same roof for who knows how long. Beside, she really wanted to at least get along with her so that her dad wouldn't have to worry about anything else beside to pull their restaurant out from being a complete bankruptcy. Well, maybe being friends with Ahn Yujin was such a pompous discourse, Minjoo would be grateful if she could at least stop acting like she didn't exist. So maybe as long as she could stand of being treated like a shadow by the tall girl, she would be all fine.

The pretty brunette continued to scan the groceries on the table as her mind continued to wander pointlessly. Tomorrow, the restaurant will open for the first time in a while and she couldn't help but to feel uneasy. Was it really okay for her to be still working her shift when she should probably be at home and help with the preparations? What if no one show up tomorrow? She gasped and immediately shook her head to push the thought away. No, she didn't have time to be negative.   Minjoo then looked over her wristwatch and sighed. It was still 3 pm meaning she had to wait for approximately two hours before she could rush home. She sighed heavily. She just couldn't wait until she graduated college so that she could dedicate all her time to the restaurant. "Agasshi, you're lucky that you're so beautiful that I wouldn't mind standing here for hours just to stare at your pretty face, but I don't think your boss right there is on the same page," Minjoo immediately bowed to the customer in front of her without looking up and speed up her scanning. She really shouldn't be daydreaming if she didn't want to get scolded by the manager. "I'm so sorry, I didnt- oh? Sunbae-nim!" she exclaimed upon seeing a familiar face in front of her. She was a little surprised to see Kang Hyungjoon, her senior as well as the head of business school committee. She wondered why he was already in Seoul when he was supposed to be in Jeju with the rest of the committee members to spend summer together. She actually got invited to join the trip eventhough she wasn't a committee member but of course, she declined the offer because she needed to work and help her dad with the restaurant. She didn't have the luxury to afford a vacation anyway. "What were you thinking about that you just realized it's me?" Hyungjoon who was standing on the other side of the cashier table said as he chuckled. The brunette just smiled nervously as she started to put the groceries to the plastic bag as fast as she could, realizing how her boss wouldn't be happy if she kept on working like a snail. "Your total comes to 8,200 won," Minjoo said as she finished putting all the groceries to the bag. The senior nodded and reached out to his pocket and took out a 10,000 won bill. "Here you go, and keep the change," he said, which immediately light a smile on the brunette's face. One of the things she liked about working in the convenience store as a cashier was having constantly tipped by the customers. It was such a decent feeling because she needed to earn and save money because the restaurant's finance wasn't really in a good shape. "It's fun seeing you happy," Hyungjoon grabbed the bag and was ready to leave the qeue. "I would like to chat more with you, do you want to watch a movie tomorrow? It's the weekend, so I guess you're not working?" Minjoo looked at her senior and was ready to decline the offer. There was no such a thing as not working on weekends for her since the restaurant will always open beside for tuesday. In addition to that, tomorrow she was going to be busy with the restaurant opening but an idea suddenly popped up from her head after she saw a glimpse of their restaurant brochure lying on the table. She immediately grabbed one and handed it to the tall guy. "Sunbae-nim, actually, my dad's restaurant is having a special day until next week and we'll be giving discounts, so if you're not busy you can come," she said, hoping that Hyungjoon would come and bring the committee members with him. The more the merrier. Hyungjoon took the brochure and nodded. "Okay then, I'll be seeing you sometimes next week," with that, he smiled at Minjoo as he walked away after Minjoo bowed and thanked him. Let's just hope that she would be meeting not only Hyungjoon, but also the committee members sometimes next week in their restaurant. The rest of Minjoo's shift went just as usual. A couple of other customers came by after she encountered Hyungjoon and before she knew it, it was already near 5, meaning her shift would be done anytime soon and she could be running home to help in the restaurant. She stretched a little and massaged her legs. People would be saying that working as a cashier is no big deal since all you had to do is just standing behind the table and scan the gorceries. But just standing will be such a tiring activity if you do it for hours. So having nothing to do except just standing behind the cashier table, Minjoo decided to have a walk on the aisle to rest her legs from the stiffness. There was no customer and her shift would be over in five minutes anyway. She went straight to the ice cream counter because it was the nearest spot to the windows. She looked over the ice scream cabinet and wondered if she should buy some for her dad. It was a hot day and her dad is probably tired from working all day. A cold and sweet popsicle would be nice. But then if she is buying for her dad, it means she had to buy one for Yujin too since she'll probably came off rude of just buying for her dad. But would she really appreciate it? And does Yujin even eat ice cream? She shook her head, trying to brush off the ice cream idea. Yujin was rude to her all the time so why should she buy her ice cream. But deep inside she knew that she would feel bad. So she decided that no one is eating ice cream that day. Beside, she didn't want to look like she was trying too hard of getting friendly with the tall girl. "That's right, let's just act professional around her," she told herself. "Minjoo-ah!" Minjoo turned over to look at her right side where the voice came from to see her manager standing just a couple of steps from her. "You can go home, Ye-Seul is already here, good work today," he said. "Yes, thank you Mr. Jang!" she bowed before heading to the cashier table and took off her employee vest. She grabbed her totebag and bowed once again to her manager before heading out of the store. The pretty brunette walked as fast as she could to get home that she didn't even realize that someone was following her steps from behind. --- "I'm home!" Minjoo exclaimed as she entered the restaurant. She looked around upon not seeing any sign of her dad and Yujin in the room. Guessing that they must be in the kitchen, Minjoo took her step passed through the cooking area when suddenly she heard footstep from her back. She immediately exclaimed and turned around to see someone she didn't expect to be back so soon from her summer break in Japan. "Unnie!!" the brunette ran to the short haired girl and hugged her tightly. She had missed her bestfriend so much eventhough the japanese girl just had been gone for three weeks. Life without Sakura was too empty. Well can you blame her? They've been bestfriends since they were so young. They basically attended the same school ever since middle school. They even attended the same university eventhough Sakura majored in accounting and Minjoo majored in finance. On the other hand, Sakura just couldn't help to join Minjoo to jump around out of excitement. Afterall she was just as excited as her best friend so they ended up making the restaurant rather hysterical because of their small reunion. "When did you get here? You said you were going to spend the entire summer exploring Japan!" Minjoo said after they broke the hug, but still holding each other's hands. "Just last night, It was so boring in Tokyo, I thought I would feel at home but a lot had changed since I left and I miss hongdae tteokbokki so much! How have you bee-omo! You've gotten a lot skinnier! Did you even eat?" Sakura looked at Minjoo up and down with concerned eyes. "Of course! I ate a lo-" "Oh? My daughter is back," Mr. Kim suddenly entered the room from the kicthen door and smiled at the bff pair. "Sakura, have you finished handing out the brochure? I told you to just help here in the restaurant, it's really hot outside," he asked. Sakura nodded as she put her hands up showing that she had no more brochures to distribute. "It's okay samcheon, I needed to go to Hongdae anyway," she replied as she smiled. "Oh?! Unnie! how could you eat Hongdae Tteokbokki without me? I feel so betrayed!" Minjoo playfully pouted as she fold her hands in front of her chest. The two discovered Hongdae Tteokbokki ever since the place was just a food truck. It remains their hangout place even though the owner could finally afford to rent a small place in Hongdae. "I'm sorry I guess I couldn't control myself! Let's go together sometimes next week!" "Arasseo!" Minjoo replied as she nodded her head playfully before turning her body around to see her dad was already in the kitchen wiping the counter with a tea cloth. She completely forgot to ask about how everything was going for tomorrow's opening. She could see half of the kitchen through the glass window separating the kitchen from the restaurant, including Yujin who just walked down the stairs to join her dad in the kitchen. As usual, the tall girl was wearing a white plain t-shirt with a long black training. Right. Minjoo just realized it now. Ever since Yujin moved in with them as a live-in employee, Minjoo had never saw her wore something else other than white, blue, or darker blue t-shir or sweats. She also sometimes wore plaid. She guessed maybe the tall girl's taste must be really plain. Minjoo gasped a little when her eyes met Yujin's. They stared for seconds so the brunette thought it might be a good idea to smile at her. Who knows? Maybe Yujin might smile back. But the minute she was ready to throw a smile, the tall girl shifted her eyes and turned left to the part of the kitchen that couldn't be seen from the restaurant. The brunette just sighed in return. It was silly of her to expect Yujin be all smiley to her. Maybe she should just accept it that the tall girl was just another unapproachable person that she shouldn't bother.   "What was that? Did you just get a cold shoulder from the icy cook?" Sakura teased, making Minjoo turned at her and shrugged her shoulders. "It's okay, I kind of already get used to it," Minjoo replied casually and walked to the kitchen.   Sakura nodded as she joined Minjoo. "But she really is charismatic, I came here this morning and saw her while she was cooking. I never saw someone looking so glorious while cooking, she took my breath away for a second," Sakura said, making Minjoo stopped on her track. Believe it or not, she never really saw Yujin cooking except for that one time when she cooked that spaghetti meatball. And she couldn't really count that as well. She only saw her back and she was always too busy trying to ignore her that night.   Minjoo smiled at Sakura. "Really? That's great I guess," she said. "Unnie, I'll head up first, I need to take a shower," she continued and walked away as Sakura nodded and joined Mr. Kim and Yujin in the kitchen. Minjoo took a glimpse of Yujin bowing slightly at Sakura before she climbed up the staurs. It made her heart sank a little. So it was just her who got ignored then. ..... Minjoo was already in the shower that morning, drying her hair. She yawned for who knows how many times since she woke up. Despite feeling like her body would crumbled down from working in the convenience store and helping in the kitchen after, she really find it hard to sleep last night so she kept on tossing and turning her body around. She was really nervous about the opening that day to the point that she had to drink almost a gallon of milk to be able to get some sleep. The brunette came out of the bathroom ten minutes later already wearing her waitress uniform. It was a really basic uniform consist of a white polo shirt and a long black pants. She tied her hair in a ponytail and grabbed her wristwatch from the tv stand. It was already 9 am and the restaurant will be opening at 11. She rushed downstairs to see no one but Yujin who was already in her chef's jacket chopping some vegetables in the chef's working table. Minjoo gulpe
