Chapter 9
Once upon a time, Donghae
I didn't stop thinking for a moment about Donghae's words and actions from that night. I analyzed him every time I was with him, with our group and even when I was alone....I asked myself who would dare break the heart of someone as humble as Donghae, and without noticing (typical of me) I started making up stories of what could've happened. I had so many, each one more dramatic than the last. I could've probably written a novel about Donghae, the perfect character.
I discovered myself in the middle of history class, watching the boy in front of me carefully, creating stories in my head similar to the romantic movies I had watched with the girls the night before in our sleepover which had been in my house. When did this happen? When did I start paying so much attention to him? Why do I suddenly want his attention on me all the time? Is it normal? So many questions flowed through my mind as our history teacher spoke about independence, wars and battles....what did he know about wars? <> I imagined two Hyukjaes fighting to separate from the outfit that brought them together. I laughed.
"So?" Sunmi's voice snapped me out of my thoughts. "Earth to Hyukjae?"
"What's going on?" I tried covering up my distraction, which had been for long and I didn't notice our teacher had left and we were on break.
"What's wrong with you? Hyukjae you've been acting weird these days, is everything ok?" Hani intervened, she seeme worried."You're not the same and you don't even go to parties with us anymore."
"Maybe she realized you're hoes and she doesn't want to be one with you guys." Chanyeol said calmly, he always made those comments...."Good job Hyukjae, good decision."
"Shut up curly," Hani tried defending herself.
"Maybe she's distracted because you don't let him concentrate, you never know maybe he realized the universe was hanging from his hands and found out he was gift carrier, a heiress or a chosen one. But he can't tell us because that would ruin everything, tell me how do you concentrate with that?" There it was, typical Donghae. After all he wasn't that different from me, with those crazy stories.
"How could we have been so blind?" Sunmi played along,"Don't worry Hyukjae, whatever it is we count on you."
"Yes, but if you're going to be like that at least make sure you are well dressed for the party....you see I'm not going to be friends with the savior of the world who uses satin." Is it necessary to say that was Hani who said that? I don't think so hehe.
"What party?" My question made everyone look at me weird.
"You really are in another word precious," Donghae threw a paper ball at my head which landed on my desk, I looked down at it and realized there was a flier.
"Christmas party," I read out loud."That's right it's almost Christmas," I was really surprised at how distracted I had really been. They all laughed.
"Hyukkie where are you?" Hani sat on the hallway, leaning against the wall under the window, next to me. "Are you ok? Do you need to talk?"
"Oh no, girl talk, let's go," Chanyeol took a bite of his apple and pulled Donghae from his shirt.
"If you need anything, we'll see you in a few minutes," Donghae followed his friend. They walked away and Hani took Donghae's place so we could be closer.
I looked at the guys, at Donghae....it still surprised me how authentic he was and yet it seemed as if every move was practiced, even the way he walked. Was life mocking me? Showing me a guy so perfect and unattainable...
"So Hyukjae....is there something you should tell us?" Sunmi took control of the conversation.
"I don't even know what's been going on with me lately," I confessed.
"Being alone isn't going to take you anywhere Hyukkie, you're going to drown yourself in a cup of water. That's why god made friends," Hani held my hand,"to help carry the load."
"Wow..." I hadn't thought of that. Why didn't I talk to them sooner? "I didn't want to bother you guys."
"Come on Hyukjae, you would never bother us with something like that...you're our friend and we worry about you, just like you worried about us that time when we wanted to go to a stranger's house...you made us reason, we could be dead right now....see? That's what friends do, look for what's best for each other. Now let us look out for you and tell us what's going on," Sunmi's smile was comforting, but even then I didn't know what to tell them.
"Why don't we do a sleepover? In your house again Hyukjae, but this time it'll be a 'girl's talk' sleepover." Hani made quotation m
