Milky Way and Candy Bakery

Never Enough

Seulgi hates mornings

The feeling of waking up early, when the sky is shaded by a beautiful tone of orange and purple, with no people on the streets and a few cars going by. The birds chirping loudly and her alarm buzzing, begging for her to open her eyes and greet the morning sun with a smile.

But Seulgi hates them so much. If she could, she would sleep all the way to the afternoon and not give a damn about her day. She knows it isn’t healthy to sleep for so long but…she just likes it. Some people like to play videogames, some others like to cook and others love to read but Seulgi likes sleeping! Specially when she’s wrapped in her soft, comfortable wool blanket that she cherishes so much

So, in order to fight her undying hate for mornings, Seulgi always buys a cup of coffee on her way to work

Yeri and Joy café, named ‘Milky Way’ isn’t far away from Seulgi’s apartment building. It’s barely a few blocks away and she can walk to it before taking the bus to work. So (while she grumbles and mumbles how much she wishes she’s sleeping on her bed and scolding herself for sleeping so late watching her favorite movies on Netflix) Seulgi grabs her bag and makes way towards ‘Milky Way’

The bell on the front door chimes when it opens, the smell of coffee is strong and comforting. Seulgi thinks she practically conditioned herself like one of Pavlov dogs to love this scent and feel renewed with just a cup of that bitter drink. There’s not many people sitting on the tables, Seulgi is smart enough to come early and far from the ‘rush hour’ so she can grab whatever she wants without waiting for a long time

“Welco-! Oh, it’s you unnie” Yeri says as she leans on the counter and pouts, her head in between her hands “What’s up?”

Yeri is a young girl with many, many dreams in front of her but she loves this shop like she loves herself and she’s been investing in it since a long time ago. Even before she got her college degree. Now, every corner of this coffee shop is an exact symbol of her hard work and how much she loves this place. She’s a prankster and she loves to joke around so Seulgi is used to this ‘unusual’ way of saying good morning

“I need an americano” says Seulgi, she sits on one of the counter little stools and leans on it with eyes that close on their own. She’s too tired for this, it’s barely 8 a.m. for sake! She needs to sleep at least four more hours to feel ready for the day…

“Unnie!” Joy slaps the counter with a heavy hand, just next to Seulgi head and the older woman jumps in her seat, almost falling off. Yeri and Joy laugh out loud and some of the other clients smile at the ridiculous scene. Seulgi pouts and looks at the small plastic cup with her coffee right in front of her

“Thanks” she grumbles and takes a sip out of the coffee. She grimaces when the bitter taste washes all her sleep away and takes the sugar jar to add some of it to her coffee “I guess I needed that”

“You’re always sleeping on our counter” Joy crosses her arms across her chest. She towers over Yeri and it’s a bit comical because they look like the perfect dynamite duo of every comic book. They could save the world if they wanted “It’s about time you stop doing that! You look like a big baby”

Joy is Yeri’s side kick, her partner in crime and best friend. They met by chance during college (and that’s a big chance since Joy majored in communication and Yeri in music) and they stuck together like glue. Seulgi thinks it has to do with the fact that Joy is Satan itself and Yeri is the perfect Satan advocate. They’re both crazy enough to make trouble but they love each other too much to just fly away without being together

“I just can’t wake up” Seulgi whines and closes her eyes, taking another sip from her coffee “How do you do it?”

“Do what?” Yeri says

“Wake up early to open your shop and all that”

“Bold of you to think we actually sleep” Joy laughs, Yeri laughs along her and Seulgi can’t hold her laugh because it actually sounds like them: Seulgi is sure that those two spend their nights binge watching all those popular TV dramas and series until morning comes and they actually have to work

“I don’t know why I keep believing in good people when you two exist”

“Oh please, where have you met kids as good as us?” Joy winks and ruffles Seulgi’s hair. The older woman pouts and she tries fixing her hair as quick as she can (There’s not much to fix anyways, she practically tied her hair into a bun and called it a day)

The front door bell dings again signaling a new customer. This time, Yeri’s eyes light up like fireworks and she quickly starts slapping Joy arm over and over

“What is WRONG with you?!” Joy whisper shouts, trying to not annoy her clients as she holds her arm and pushes Yeri. Seulgi is minding her business, still sipping from her coffee and ignoring the ruckus between the two friends

“Are you even looking?!” Yeri frowns “Look who’s there!”

Joy puts her gaze on the front door and she squeals, a literal squeal, Seulgi lifts her eyebrow

“What’s happening?”

“It’s her!” Joy puts both hands on to stop herself from screaming “Are you seeing that, Yeri?”

“Of course, you absolute waste of space” Yeri groans “I told you in the first place!”

Seulgi turns around, questioning why these two girls are losing her mind. And the scene is as beautiful as one can imagine: there’s a wonderful woman texting on her phone, she’s wearing a leather jacket on top of a white shirt and pants along with high heels, her blonde short hair reaches her shoulders. Seulgi thinks she’s stunning, out of this world and falls open…

Forgetting she still had coffee in

So the hot drink spills all over her shirt and work pants while Yeri cackles and Joy whines

“Ah, unnie!” says Joy “You’re so embarrassing!”

“Sorry” Seulgi mumbles, red from head to toe as she fixes her mess with a few bunched up napkins “Who is she anyways?”

“She's Joy crush” Yeri is trying to help Seulgi from the other side of the counter but her laughter is too loud and she just loves to see Seulgi being so miserable “Isn't she pretty?”

The coffee lover tries to keep her dignity in place and nods

“She is but…she doesn't look like YOUR kind of people” Yeri lifts an eyebrow, making a silent question to her unnie "I mean devil spawns and all that"

Joy keeps her pout and it's about to say something until Wendy walks near the counter. She loses her mind and quickly runs to the back of the store

“Hey! What am I supposed to do?” Yeri groans but then, she gets the brightest of the ideas, something that can actually be funny if it's done the right way. She pushes her notepad towards Seulgi and gives her a pen

“Eh? What the hell?!” Seulgi tries to give back the notepad. Wendy is closer and closer. She's too deep into her phone to actually pay attention to the two women wrestling each other for the control of the notepad “Yeri, don't do this!”

“Just ask for her order, unnie! Don't be a coward, it'll be fine!”

“Yeri, come on!”

“Just do it!”

“But why me?!”

“It's gonna be fun!”

“Look at me! I'm a whole me-”

“Uhm, excuse me?”

Seulgi turns around, like she's on a horror movie and she gulps. It's totally awful to be like this: she reeks of coffee, covered in it from her chest to her thighs, she's not wearing an apron but her work clothes and she awkwardly holds the pen in one hand and the notepad in the other

“Good morning” Yeri greets with a smile “Unnie will be taking your order, Wendy-nim. Be kind to her, okay? She just started today”

Oh my god, Kim Yerim! I will kick your !

Wendy gently smiles at Seulgi and Seulgi thinks it definitely has to do with the way she looks. She must think Seulgi is a total idiot or some kind of rookie who just had a bad day. The coffee lover is still a mess because the pretty girl is looking at her with a smile, she starts blushing and stuttering. Her anxiousness is on the roof

Yeri snickering at the back is not a great sign and Joy has joined the joke. Seemingly not caring about her crush talking to someone else

“Uhm…can I- can I take your order?”

“I'll have a bubble tea, please-”

Wendy is looking for a name tag, anything that can tell her what's Seulgi's name but she doesn't have anything on her and Seulgi takes the first step

“It's Seulgi. My name is Seulgi”

“All right, Seul!” Wendy nods, a bright smile on her face “Just a bubble tea. Don't worry about the ingredients, Joy and Yeri already know about that”

Yikes…she really thinks I'm dumb

Seulgi smiles, nods, takes the notepad and walks away all in that order. She's blushing hard as she runs to the back of the store and looks at the two evil girls laughing at her as soon as she enters the storage

“I hate you!” Seulgi keeps her voice a whisper as she pushes the notepad towards Yeri direction “You guys are so evil, why did you make me do that?!”

“Oh come on, unnie. You needed it!” Joy says, smiling “Its a way to wake up!”

Seulgi grumbles. Yeri is already starting to make Wendy's order

“She said that you two could handle the order…she must know I'm just being a idiot”

“Hey, don't get sad” Joy moved towards Seulgi and places both hands on her unnie shoulders “Its just a prank, okay? You know we love you. I have some spare clothes in my bag and they can help you out at least for today…do you want them?”

Seulgi nods, like a scolded kid and she walks with Joy to the bathroom to get changed into clean clothes and sneak out of the back door. There's no way in hell she's seeing Wendy again!

Yeri gives Wendy her tea order and waves her goodbye as she steps out of the store.

While she crossed the street, walking towards her own job at the bakery in the corner, she sees Seulgi sneaking out of Milky Way's back door with Joy pushing her and fixing her clothes.

Wendy can't help but smile

It's been two weeks since she saw Seulgi at the coffee shop

And Wendy can't stop thinking about her

Her shy smile and her awkward self, the way she tried to cover her messy clothes and hair. How she went along to Yeri and Joy prank just to make them laugh. Her soft personality and appearance had Wendy smiling all day long

She was daydreaming too hard because the next thing she feels is a whack in the head

“Ouch!” she groans and holds the sore spot above her head while she looks at the 'aggressor'

“Get back to work" Irene lifts her eyebrows as she crosses her arms across her chest “Are you daydreaming with that girl again?”

“No!”

“Yeah sure as hell you don't…you almost burned the muffins”

Wendy looks guilty, lowering her head like a scolded puppy and scratching the back of her neck

“Sorry, unnie”

Irene sighs and shakes her head

“Is okay, Wendy. Don't feel bad for that…is she pretty?”

“Like an angel!” Wendy laughs and brings her hands to her chest, she leaves a white stain on her apron thanks to the flour in her hands “Haven't you seen her? She comes around quite often”

Irene starts thinking, you can practically see the cogs turning in her head until she just shrugs and shakes her head again

“Nope. I don't think I remember her. What is she like?”

By this point, Irene is fairly amused by Wendy descriptions of Seulgi so she gives her a little push and let's the greasy woman be

“Eyes a beautiful shade of brown and her silky hair tied in a bun and her smile was so awkward and lovely and I just looooved how soft she was and-”

“Seungwan-ah” Irene chooses to use Wendy's birth name while she holds back her laughter “You're ranting”

“Oh sorry…she's just so, so perfect”

Wendy lets her hands fall besides her body and pouts

“I wish I could see her again"

The front door of the bakery opens. It's a quiet place during noon, where people isn't as interested in eating the wonderful orange muffins (made by Wendy) or the watermelon icing on the purple macarons (made by Irene) as in the mornings. Irene opened this store some years ago with the last of her savings after losing her job and dropping out of college so she's put heart and soul into this

After gaining some popularity, she hired Wendy who was a struggling and hungry artist looking for a job. She wanted to sing but nobody have her a chance and, after some bad experiences in a bar while she worked the night shift as a singer, Wendy chose a ‘easier’ job doing her hobby: baking

And so, ‘The Candy Bakery’ was born

(Wendy still thinks that ‘Baekery' would've been a kick- name but Irene thinks it's stupid )

Irene and Wendy are at the kitchen so Irene takes a look towards the counter and greets the client who seems totally entranced by the bakery and takes out a camera from the back of their pants pocket to take a picture of their surroundings

“Hi” Irene greets carefully like she always does “Welcome”

“Uhm, hi!” the stranger greets happily “I don't want to buy anything, sorry I'm just looking for someone”

Wendy curiously tries to take a peek from the kitchen but she can't see. The oven is in her way

“Someone?” Irene now seems more defensive, a tiny bit of discomfort in her voice “And who's that someone?”

“I think her name is Wendy”

Irene immediately smiles and says no more. She only nods

“Wendy-ah! Someone is looking for you!”

The baker, still not knowing who it was, steps out of the kitchen wiping her dirty hands on a cloth as she sees the someone who's looking for her

None other than Seulgi

Her eyes immediately sparkle as she greets Wendy with a hand gesture and a big, fluffy smile. Her hands are holding a plastic cup

“Hey!” she giggles “I hope you don't mind my visit. I-uhm...I saw you walking over here last week and I thought that you worked here so-”

“Is okay” Wendy smiles. Just like she did back then when she thought that Seulgi was adorable when she took her order “I don't mind”

“That's great!” Seulgi replies, a little bit too excited “I was thinking that maybe we can go on a date or…something”

Irene is still looking at everything from the counter, disguising her activities as something else. She's smiling and about to take her phone for a picture of her lovely employee. Wendy turns around and looks for Irene, when she's about to ask for something, Irene just dismisses her and mouths a “Go now”

Wendy takes off her apron and drapes it over a chair

“I'm really dirty right now” Wendy says, pointing at her dusty clothes

“Like that matters, you practically met me when I was covered in coffee”

The baker only laughs. That memory is still fun to revisit

They walk out of the bakery, Seulgi hands Wendy the plastic cup

“Here, I got you tea since I know you love it”

Wendy takes a sip from the cup and sighs. This isn't even her favorite flavor, this isn't bubble tea but it was bought by Seulgi and the fact that she thought of her is more than enough to give her a chance

“Thanks, Seulgi” Wendy smiles “Its great”

And maybe a little white lie can make her tea sweet
